Acts 7
1 And the chief priest said, “Are then these things so?”
«Tout cela est-il vrai?» lui demanda le grand-prêtre.
2 And he said, “Men, brothers, and fathers, listen! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, being in Mesopotamia, before his dwelling in Haran,
Étienne dit alors: «Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez! Le Dieu de gloire apparut à notre père Abraham, en Mésopotamie, avant son établissement à Charran,
3 and He said to him, Go forth out of your land, and out of your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.
et lui dit: «Sors de ton pays et de ta famille et va dans le pays que je te montrerai.»
4 Then having come forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, he dwelt in Haran, and from there, after the death of his father, He removed him to this land wherein you now dwell,
Il sortit alors du pays des Chaldéens et s'établit à Charran. De là, après la mort de son père, Dieu le fit passer dans ce pays-ci que vous habitez maintenant.»
5 and He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a footstep, and promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him—he having no child.
«Il ne lui donna aucune propriété dans ce pays, pas même de quoi poser le pied, mais il promit de le mettre, lui et ses descendants, en sa possession, quoiqu'il n'eût pas d'enfant.
6 And God spoke thus, that his seed will be sojourning in a strange land, and they will cause it to serve, and will do it evil [for] four hundred years.
Voici comment Dieu parla: «Ses descendants demeureront dans un pays étranger, on les fera esclaves et on les persécutera pendant quatre cents ans
7 And the nation whom they will serve I will judge, said God; And after these things they will come forth and will do Me service in this place.
et la nation qui les fera esclaves c'est moi qui la jugerai, dit Dieu, et ensuite ils partiront et me rendront un culte dans ce lieu-ci.»
8 And He gave to him a covenant of circumcision, and so he begot Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac [begot] Jacob, and Jacob—the twelve patriarchs;
«Puis Dieu fit avec Abraham l'alliance de la circoncision. C'est ainsi qu'ayant engendré Isaac, Abraham le circoncit le huitième jour, de même Isaac Jacob, et Jacob les douze patriarches.»
9 and the patriarchs, having been moved with jealousy, sold Joseph to Egypt, and God was with him,
«Les patriarches, jaloux de Joseph, le vendirent pour le faire emmener en Égypte.»
10 and delivered him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he set him—governor over Egypt and all his house.
«Mais Dieu était avec lui, il le tira de toutes ses épreuves, il lui donna de la sagesse et lui fit trouver grâce devant Pharaon, roi d'Égypte, qui l'établit gouverneur d'Égypte et de toute sa maison.»
11 And there came a scarcity on all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great tribulation, and our fathers were not finding sustenance,
«Il survint une famine dans toute l'Égypte et en Chanaan, la détresse était grande, et nos pères ne trouvaient pas de quoi se nourrir.
12 and Jacob having heard that there was grain in Egypt, sent forth our fathers a first time;
Mais Jacob apprit qu'il y avait du blé en Égypte et il y envoya nos pères une première fois.
13 and at the second time was Joseph made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became disclosed to Pharaoh,
Au second voyage, Joseph se fit reconnaître par ses frères et Pharaon apprit quelle était l'origine de Joseph.»
14 and Joseph having sent, called for his father Jacob, and all his relatives—with seventy-five souls—
«Alors Joseph envoya chercher son père Jacob et toute sa famille, en tout soixante-quinze personnes.
15 and Jacob went down to Egypt, and died, himself and our fathers,
Jacob descendit en Égypte et y mourut; nos pères aussi;
16 and they were carried over into Shechem, and were laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in money from the sons of Emmor, of Shechem.
on les transporta à Sichem et on les déposa dans le tombeau qu'Abraham, à prix d'argent, y avait acheté des fils d'Emmor.»
17 And according as the time of the promise was drawing near, which God swore to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,
«Lorsque approcha le moment où devait s'accomplir la promesse solennellement faite par Dieu à Abraham, le peuple s'accrut et se multiplia en Égypte
18 until another king rose, who had not known Joseph;
jusqu'au règne d'un autre roi qui n'avait pas connu Joseph.»
19 this one, having dealt subtly with our family, did evil to our fathers, causing to expose their babies, that they might not live;
Celui-ci traita notre peuple par la ruse et persécuta nos pères jusqu'à leur faire exposer leurs enfants pour leur ôter la vie.»
20 in which time Moses was born, and he was fair to God, and he was brought up [for] three months in the house of his father;
«C'est alors que naquit Moïse; il était d'une divine beauté; trois mois il fut élevé dans la maison de son père.
21 and he having been set outside, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and reared him to herself for a son;
Quand il fut exposé, la fille de Pharaon le recueillit et l'éleva comme son propre fils.
22 and Moses was taught in all wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in words and in works.
Moïse fut instruit dans toute la sagesse des Égyptiens; il était puissant en paroles et en oeuvres.»
23 And when forty years were fulfilled to him, it came on his heart to look after his brothers, the sons of Israel;
«Quand il eut quarante ans accomplis, il lui monta au coeur le désir de visiter ses frères les enfants d'Israël.
24 and having seen a certain one suffering injustice, he defended, and did justice to the oppressed, having struck the Egyptian;
Il en vit maltraiter un et, prenant son parti, il vengea le tort qui lui était fait en frappant l'Égyptien.
25 and he was supposing his brothers to understand that God gives salvation through his hand; and they did not understand.
Il pensait faire comprendre à ses frères que Dieu, par ses mains, voulait les délivrer; mais ils ne comprirent pas.
26 On the succeeding day, also, he showed himself to them as they are striving, and urged them to peace, saying, Men, you are brothers, why do you do injustice to one another?
Le lendemain il se présenta à eux pendant qu'ils se querellaient et comme il les exhortait à se réconcilier en leur disant: «Vous êtes frères, pourquoi vous maltraitez-vous?»
27 And he who is doing injustice to the neighbor, thrusted him away, saying, Who set you a ruler and a judge over us?
celui qui faisait tort à son prochain le repoussa par ces mots: «Qui donc t'a nommé notre chef et notre juge?
28 Do you wish to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?
Voudrais-tu me tuer, moi aussi, comme l'Égyptien que tu as tué hier?»
29 And Moses fled at this word, and became a sojourner in the land of Midian, where he begot two sons,
A cette parole, Moïse prit la fuite et alla vivre en étranger dans le pays de Madian, où il engendra deux fils.»
30 and forty years having been fulfilled, there appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai [the] Messenger of the LORD, in a flame of fire of a bush,
«Quarante ans plus tard, un ange lui apparut au désert du mont Sinaï dans la flamme d'un buisson en feu.
31 and Moses having seen, wondered at the sight; and he drawing near to behold, there came a voice of the LORD to him,
Moïse le vit et, tout surpris de cette apparition, il s'approchait pour la considérer de plus près, lorsque la voix du Seigneur se fit entendre:
32 I [am] the God of your fathers; the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses having become terrified, did not dare behold,
«Je suis le Dieu de tes pères, le Dieu d'Abraham et d'Isaac et de Jacob.
33 and the LORD said to him, Loose the sandal of your feet, for the place in which you have stood is holy ground;
Tremblant de peur, Moïse n'osa pas regarder davantage. Alors le Seigneur lui dit: «Ote de tes pieds tes chaussures, car le lieu où tu te trouves est une terre sainte;
34 seeing I have seen the affliction of My people that [is] in Egypt, and I heard their groaning, and came down to deliver them; and now come, I will send you to Egypt.
j'ai regardé et j'ai vu la misère de mon peuple en Égypte, et j'ai entendu ses gémissements et je suis descendu pour le délivrer. Viens maintenant pour que je t'envoie en Égypte.»
35 This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who set you a ruler and a judge? This one God sent [as] a ruler and a redeemer, by the hand of [the] Messenger who appeared to him in the bush;
«C'est ce Moïse qu'ils avaient renié en disant: «Qui donc t'a nommé notre chef et notre juges?» que Dieu a envoyé comme chef et comme libérateur avec l'aide de l'ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson.
36 this one brought them forth, having done wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years;
C'est lui qui les a délivrés en faisant des prodiges et des miracles en Égypte, sur la mer Rouge et au désert pendant quarante ans.
37 this is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel: The LORD your God will raise up to you a Prophet out of your brothers, like to me, Him will you hear.
C'est ce Moïse qui a dit aux enfants d'Israël: «Dieu vous suscitera d'entre vos frères un prophète semblable à moi.»
38 This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the Messenger who is speaking to him in Mount Sinai, and with our fathers who received the living oracles to give to us;
C'est lui qui était au milieu de l'assemblée au désert avec l'ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sinaï et avec nos pères. C'est lui qui reçut, pour vous les transmettre, des oracles de vie.
39 to whom our fathers did not wish to become obedient, but thrusted away, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,
C'est à lui que nos pères n'ont pas voulu obéir. C'est lui qu'ils repoussèrent pour tourner leurs coeurs vers l'Égypte,
40 saying to Aaron, Make to us gods who will go on before us, for this Moses, who brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, we have not known what has happened to him.
disant à Aaron: «Fais-nous des dieux qui nous conduisent; car ce Moïse, qui nous a fait sortir du pays d'Égypte, nous ne savons ce qui lui est arrivé.»
41 And they made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in the works of their hands,
«En ces jours-là, ils fabriquèrent un veau et ils offrirent un sacrifice à cette idole et célébrèrent une joyeuse fête à ces oeuvres de leurs mains.
42 and God turned, and gave them up to do service to the host of Heaven, according as it has been written in the scroll of the Prophets: Did you offer slain beasts and sacrifices to Me forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
Alors Dieu les abandonna et les livra au culte de l'armée du ciel, comme il est écrit dans le livre des Prophètes: «M'avez-vous offert des victimes et des sacrifices Au désert pendant quarante ans, ô maison d' Israël,
43 And you took up the dwelling place of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan—the figures that you made to worship them, and I will remove your dwelling beyond Babylon.
Quand vous transportiez le tabernacle de Moloch et l'étoile de votre dieu Romphan, Ces idoles que vous avez fabriquées pour vous prosterner devant elles? Eh bien, je vous déporterai au delà de Babylone.»
44 The Dwelling Place of the Testimony was among our fathers in the wilderness, according as He directed, who is speaking to Moses, to make it according to the figure that he had seen;
«Nos pères avaient au désert le tabernacle du témoignage, comme l'avait ordonné celui qui avait dit à Moïse de le faire sur le modèle qu'il avait vu.
45 which also our fathers having in succession received, brought in with Joshua, into the possession of the nations whom God drove out from the presence of our fathers, until the days of David,
Nos pères, l'ayant reçu à leur tour, l'introduisirent avec Josué dans le pays conquis sur les peuples chassés par Dieu devant eux. Il en fut ainsi jusqu'au jour de David
46 who found favor before God, and requested to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob;
qui trouva grâce devant Dieu et demanda à élever une demeure à la maison de Jacob.
47 and Solomon built Him a house.
Ce fut Salomon qui lui bâtit une maison.»
48 But the Most High does not dwell in sanctuaries made with hands, according as the prophet says:
«Mais le Très Haut n'habite point dans ce qui est fait de mains d'hommes, comme le dit le prophète:
49 Heaven [is] My throne, And the earth My footstool, What house will you build to Me? Says the LORD; Or what [is] the place of My rest?
«Le ciel est mon trône, La terre est mon marchepied; Quelle maison m'édifierez-vous, dit le Seigneur, Ou quel sera mon lieu de repos?
50 Has My hand not made all these things?
N'est-ce pas ma main qui a fait toutes ces choses?»
51 You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and in ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers—also you;
«Têtes dures! coeurs et oreilles incirconcis! vous résistez toujours à l'Esprit saint, comme l'ont fait vos pères!
52 which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who declared before about the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers,
Lequel des prophètes vos pères n'ont-ils pas persécuté! Ils ont tué ceux qui annonçaient la venue du Juste, que vous avez trahi et dont vous avez été les meurtriers!
53 who received the Law by arrangement of messengers, and did not keep [it].”
Cette Loi que vous aviez reçue sur les ordres des anges, vous ne l'avez pas gardée...»
54 And hearing these things, they were cut to the hearts, and gnashed the teeth at him;
Ces paroles leur mirent la rage au coeur et ils grincèrent des dents contre Étienne;
55 and being full of the Holy Spirit, having looked steadfastly to the sky, he saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
mais lui, plein d'Esprit saint, les yeux fixés au ciel, vit la gloire de Dieu et Jésus debout à la droite de Dieu,
56 and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens having been opened, and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God.”
et il dit: «Voilà que je vois les cieux ouverts et le Fils de l'homme debout à la droite de Dieu!»
57 And they, having cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and rushed with one accord on him,
Alors ils poussèrent de grands cris, se bouchèrent les oreilles, se précipitèrent tous ensemble sur lui
58 and having cast him forth outside of the city, they were stoning [him]—and the witnesses put down their garments at the feet of a young man called Saul—
et l'entraînèrent hors de la ville, où ils le lapidèrent. Les témoins déposèrent leurs vêtements aux pieds d'un jeune homme nommé Saul
59 and they were stoning Stephen, [as he was] calling and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit”;
et, pendant qu'ils le lapidaient, Étienne priait et disait: «Seigneur Jésus, reçois mon esprit.»
60 and having bowed the knees, he cried with a loud voice, “LORD, may You not lay to them this sin”; and having said this, he fell asleep.
Puis il se mit à genoux et s'écria à haute voix: «Seigneur ne leur demande pas compte de ce péché!» En prononçant les paroles, il s'endormit.
