Acts 19
1 And it came to pass, in Apollos being in Corinth, Paul having gone through the upper parts, came to Ephesus, and having found certain disciples,
Or il arriva comme Apollos était à Corinthe, que Paul après avoir traversé tous les quartiers d'en haut, vint à Ephèse, où ayant trouvé de certains disciples, il leur dit:
2 he said to them, “Having believed, did you receive the Holy Spirit?” And they said to him, “But we did not even hear whether there is any Holy Spirit”;
Avez-vous reçu le Saint-Esprit quand vous avez cru? et ils lui répondirent: nous n'avons pas même ouï dire s'il y a un Saint-Esprit.
3 and he said to them, “Into what, then, were you immersed?” And they said, “Into John’s immersion.”
Et il leur dit: de quel [Baptême] donc avez-vous été baptisés; ils répondirent: du Baptême de Jean.
4 And Paul said, “John, indeed, immersed with an immersion of conversion, saying to the people that they should believe in Him who is coming after him—that is, in the Christ—Jesus”;
Alors Paul dit: il est vrai que Jean a baptisé du Baptême de repentance, disant au peuple, qu'ils crussent en celui qui venait après lui, c'est-à-dire, en Jésus- Christ.
5 and they, having heard, were immersed into the Name of the Lord Jesus,
Et ayant ouï ces choses, ils furent baptisés au Nom du Seigneur Jésus.
6 and Paul having laid [his] hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, they were also speaking with tongues, and prophesying,
Et après que Paul leur eut imposé les mains, le Saint-Esprit descendit sur eux, et ainsi ils parlèrent divers langages, et prophétisèrent.
7 and all the men were, as it were, twelve.
Et tous ces hommes-là étaient environ douze.
8 And having gone into the synagogue, he was speaking boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading the things concerning the Kingdom of God,
Puis étant entré dans la Synagogue, il parla avec hardiesse l'espace de trois mois, disputant, et persuadant les choses du Royaume de Dieu.
9 and when certain were hardened and were disbelieving, speaking evil of The Way before the multitude, having departed from them, he separated the disciples, reasoning every day in the school of a certain Tyrannus.
Mais comme quelques-uns s'endurcissaient, et étaient rebelles, parlant mal de la voie [du Seigneur] devant la multitude, lui s'étant retiré d'avec eux, sépara les disciples; et il disputait tous les jours dans l'école d'un nommé Tyrannus.
10 And this happened for two years so that all those dwelling in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks,
Et cela continua l'espace de deux ans; de sorte que tous ceux qui demeuraient en Asie, tant Juifs que Grecs, ouïrent la parole du Seigneur Jésus.
11 also mighty works—not common—God was working through the hands of Paul,
Et Dieu faisait des prodiges extraordinaires par les mains de Paul:
12 so that even to the ailing were brought from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them; the evil spirits also went forth from them.
De sorte que même on portait de dessus son corps des mouchoirs et des linges sur les malades, et ils étaient guéris de leurs maladies, et les esprits malins sortaient des [possédés].
13 And certain of the wandering exorcist Jews, took on [them] to name over those having the evil spirits the Name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preaches”;
Alors quelques-uns d'entre les Juifs exorcistes, qui couraient çà et là, essayèrent d'invoquer le Nom du Seigneur Jésus sur ceux qui étaient possédés des esprits malins, en disant: nous vous conjurons par ce Jésus que Paul prêche.
14 and there were certain—seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest—who are doing this thing;
Et ceux qui faisaient cela étaient sept fils de Scéva Juif, principal Sacrificateur
15 and the evil spirit, answering, said, “I know Jesus, and I am acquainted with Paul; and you—who are you?”
Mais le malin esprit répondant, dit: je connais Jésus, et je sais qui est Paul; mais vous, qui êtes-vous?
16 And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaping on them, and having overcome them, prevailed against them, so that they fled naked and wounded out of that house,
Et l'homme en qui était le malin esprit, sauta sur eux, et s'en étant rendu le maître, les traita si mal, qu'ils s'enfuirent de cette maison tout nus et blessés.
17 and this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who are dwelling at Ephesus, and fear fell on them all, and the Name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified;
Or cela vint à la connaissance de tous les Juifs et des Grecs qui demeuraient à Ephèse; et ils furent tous saisis de crainte, et le Nom du Seigneur Jésus était glorifié.
18 many also of those who believed were coming, confessing and declaring their acts,
Et plusieurs de ceux qui avaient cru venaient, confessant et déclarant ce qu'ils avaient fait.
19 and many of those who had practiced the superfluous arts, having brought the scrolls together, were burning [them] before all; and they reckoned together the prices of them, and found [it] fifty thousand pieces of silver,
Plusieurs aussi de ceux qui s'étaient adonnés à des pratiques curieuses, apportèrent leurs Livres, et les brûlèrent devant tous, dont ayant supputé le prix, on trouva qu'il montait à cinquante mille pièces d'argent.
20 so powerfully was the word of God increasing and prevailing.
Ainsi la parole du Seigneur se répandait sensiblement, et produisait de grands effets.
21 And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit, having gone through Macedonia and Achaia, to go on to Jerusalem, saying, “After my being there, it is also necessary for me to see Rome”;
Or après que ces choses furent faites, Paul se proposa par [un mouvement] de l'Esprit de passer par la Macédoine et par l'Achaïe, et d'aller à Jérusalem, disant: après que j'aurai été là, il me faut aussi voir Rome.
22 and having sent to Macedonia two of those ministering to him—Timotheus and Erastus—he himself stayed a time in Asia.
Et ayant envoyé en Macédoine deux de ceux qui l'assistaient, [savoir] Timothée et Eraste, il demeura quelque temps en Asie.
23 And there came, at that time, not a little stir about The Way,
Mais en ce temps-là il arriva un grand trouble, à cause de la doctrine.
24 for a certain one, Demetrius by name, a worker in silver, making silver sanctuaries of Artemis, was bringing to the craftsmen not a little gain,
Car un certain homme, nommé Démétrius, qui travaillait en argenterie, et faisait de petits temples d'argent de Diane, et qui apportait beaucoup de profit aux ouvriers du métier,
25 whom, having brought in a crowd together, and those who worked around such things, he said, “Men, you know that by this work we have our wealth;
Les assembla, avec d'autres qui travaillaient à de semblables ouvrages, et leur dit: Ô hommes! vous savez que tout notre gain vient de cet ouvrage.
26 and you see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, turned away a great multitude, saying that they who are made by hands are not gods;
Or vous voyez et vous entendez comment non-seulement à Ephèse, mais presque par toute l'Asie, ce Paul-ci par ses persuasions a détourné beaucoup de monde, en disant que ceux-là ne sont point des dieux, qui sont faits de main.
27 and not only is this department in danger for us of coming into disregard, but also, that of the great goddess Artemis, the temple is to be reckoned for nothing, and also her greatness is about to be brought down, whom all Asia and the world worships.”
Et il n'y a pas seulement de danger pour nous que notre métier ne vienne à être décrié, mais aussi que le Temple de la grande déesse Diane ne soit plus rien estimé, et qu'il n'arrive que sa majesté, laquelle toute l'Asie et le monde universel révère, ne soit anéantie.
28 And having heard, and having become full of wrath, they were crying out, saying, “Great [is] the Artemis of the Ephesians!”
Et quand ils eurent entendu ces choses, ils furent tous remplis de colère, et s'écrièrent, disant: grande est la Diane des Ephésiens!
29 And the whole city was filled with confusion; they rushed also with one accord into the theater, having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul’s fellow-travelers.
Et toute la ville fut remplie de confusion; et ils se jetèrent en foule dans le Théâtre, et enlevèrent Gaïus et Aristarque Macédoniens, compagnons de voyage de Paul.
30 And on Paul’s resolving to enter in to the populace, the disciples were not permitting him,
Et comme Paul voulait entrer vers le peuple, les disciples ne le lui permirent point.
31 and also some of the chief men of Asia, being his friends, having sent to him, were pleading [with] him not to venture into the theater himself.
Quelques-uns aussi d'entre les Asiarques, qui étaient ses amis, envoyèrent vers lui, pour le prier de ne se présenter point au Théâtre.
32 Some indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they had come together;
Les uns donc criaient d'une façon, et les autres d'une autre, car l'Assemblée était confuse, et plusieurs même ne savaient pas pourquoi ils étaient assemblés.
33 and out of the multitude they put forward Alexander—the Jews thrusting him forward—and Alexander having beckoned with the hand, wished to make defense to the populace,
Alors Alexandre fut contraint de sortir hors de la foule, les Juifs le poussant [à parler]; et Alexandre faisant signe de la main, voulait alléguer quelque excuse au peuple.
34 and having known that he is a Jew, one voice came out of all, for about two hours, crying, “Great [is] the Artemis of the Ephesians!”
Mais quand ils eurent connu qu'il était Juif, il s'éleva une voix de tous, durant l'espace presque de deux heures, en criant: grande est la Diane des Ephésiens!
35 And the public clerk having quieted the multitude, says, “Men, Ephesians, why, who is the man that does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of that which fell down from Zeus?
Mais le Secrétaire de la ville ayant apaisé cette multitude [de peuple], dit: hommes Ephésiens, et qui est celui des hommes qui ne sache que la ville des Ephésiens est dédiée au service de la grande déesse Diane, et à [son] image, descendue de Jupiter?
36 These things, then, being undeniable, it is necessary for you to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
Ces choses donc étant telles sans contradiction, il faut que vous vous apaisiez, et que vous ne fassiez rien imprudemment.
37 For you brought these men, who are neither temple-robbers nor slandering of your goddess;
Car ces gens que vous avez amenés, ne sont ni sacrilèges, ni blasphémateurs de votre déesse.
38 if indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a matter with anyone, court [days] are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another.
Mais si Démétrius et les ouvriers qui sont avec lui, ont quelque chose à dire contre quelqu'un, on tient la cour, et il y a des Proconsuls; qu'ils s'y appellent [donc] les uns les autres.
39 And if you seek after anything concerning other matters, it will be determined in the legal assembly;
Et si vous avez quelque autre chose à demander, cela se pourra décider dans une assemblée dûment convoquée.
40 for we are also in peril of being accused of insurrection in regard to this day, there being no occasion by which we will be able to give an account of this concourse”;
Car nous sommes en danger d'être accusés de sédition pour ce qui s'est passé aujourd'hui; puisqu'il n'y a aucun sujet que nous puissions alléguer pour rendre raison de cette émeute.
41 and having said these things, he dismissed the assembly.
Et quand il eut dit ces choses, il congédia l'assemblée.
