3 John 1
1 The elder to Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth!
Le vieillard, au très cher Gaïus que j’aime dans la vérité.
2 Beloved, I desire you to prosper concerning all things, and to be in health, even as your soul prospers,
Mon bien-aimé, je prie pour que toutes tes affaires et ta santé soient en aussi bon état que ton âme.
3 for I rejoiced exceedingly, brothers coming and testifying of the truth in you, even as you walk in truth;
Je me suis fort réjoui, nos frères étant venus, et ayant rendu témoignage de ta sincérité et de la manière dont tu marches dans la vérité.
4 I have no joy greater than these things, that I may hear of my children walking in truth.
Je n’ai pas de plus grande joie que d’apprendre que mes enfants marchent dans la vérité.
5 Beloved, you act faithfully in whatever you may do toward the brothers and the one [among] strangers,
Mon bien-aimé, tu agis fidèlement dans tout ce que tu fais pour nos frères, et particulièrement pour les étrangers,
6 who testified of your love before an assembly, whom you will do well, having sent forward worthily of God,
Qui ont rendu témoignage à ta charité en présence de l’Église; tu agiras très bien si tu leur fais une conduite digne de Dieu.
7 because they went forth for [His] Name, receiving nothing from the nations;
Car c’est pour son nom qu’ils sont partis, n’ayant rien reçu des gentils.
8 we, then, ought to receive such, that we may become fellow-workers to the truth.
Nous donc, nous devons accueillir ces sortes de personnes, afin de coopérer à l’avancement de la vérité.
9 I wrote to the assembly, but he who is loving to be first among them—Diotrephes—does not receive us;
J’aurais peut-être écrit à l’Église, mais celui qui aime à y tenir le premier rang, Diotrèphe, ne veut pas nous recevoir.
10 because of this, if I may come, I will cause him to remember his works that he does, talking nonsense against us with evil words; and not content with these, neither does he himself receive the brothers, and he forbids those intending [to receive them], and he casts [them] out of the assembly.
C’est pourquoi, si je viens, je lui rappellerai les œuvres qu’il fait en tenant contre nous des discours malins; et comme si c’était encore trop peu pour lui, non seulement il ne reçoit pas lui-même nos frères, mais il empêche ceux qui voudraient les recevoir, et il les chasse de l’Église.
11 Beloved, do not be following that which is evil, but that which is good; he who is doing good, he is of God, [but] he who is doing evil has not seen God;
Mon bien-aimé, n’imite point le mal, mais le bien. Qui fait le bien est de Dieu; qui fait le mal n’a pas vu Dieu.
12 testimony has been given to Demetrius by all, and by the truth itself, and we also—we testify, and you have known that our testimony is true.
Pour Démétrius, témoignage lui est rendu par tout le monde et par la vérité elle-même; mais nous aussi nous lui rendons témoignage, et tu sais que notre témoignage est véritable.
13 Many things I had to write, but I do not wish to write to you through ink and pen,
J’ai beaucoup de choses à t’écrire; mais je ne veux pas l’écrire avec de l’encre et une plume;
14 and I hope to see you soon, and we will speak mouth to mouth. Peace to you! The friends greet you. Be greeting the friends by name.
Parce que j’espère te voir bientôt, et alors nous parlerons de bouche à bouche. Paix à toi. Nos amis te saluent. Salue nos amis par leur nom.
