2 Samuel 20
1 And there happened to be a man of worthlessness there, and his name [is] Sheba, son of Bichri, a Benjamite, and he blows with a horn and says, “We have no portion in David, and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; each [goes] to his tents, O Israel.”
Or, il se trouva là un misérable du nom de Chéba, fils de Bikhri, Benjamite; il sonna du cor et proclama: "Nous n’avons aucune part à David, aucune communauté à revendiquer avec le fils de Jessé; chacun à ses tentes, ô Israël!"
2 And every man of Israel goes up from after David, after Sheba son of Bichri, and the men of Judah have cleaved to their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.
Et tout Israël abandonna le parti de David pour suivre Chéba, tandis que les hommes de Juda, depuis le Jourdain jusqu’à Jérusalem, restèrent attachés à leur roi.
3 And David comes to his house at Jerusalem. And the king takes the ten women-concubines whom he had left to keep the house, and puts them in a house of ward and sustains them, and he has not gone in to them, and they are shut up to the day of their death, living in widowhood.
Le roi David, étant rentré dans sa demeure à Jérusalem, prit les dix concubines qu’il avait commises à la garde du palais et les mit dans un lieu de dépôt, où il pourvut à leurs besoins mais il n’approcha point d’elles, et elles restèrent séquestrées jusqu’au jour de leur mort, en état de veuvage perpétuel.
4 And the king says to Amasa, “Call the men of Judah for me [within] three days, and you, stand here,”
Le roi dit à Amasa: "Rassemble-moi les hommes de Juda dans les trois jours, puis tu attendras ici."
5 and Amasa goes to call Judah, and tarries beyond the appointed time that he had appointed him;
Amasa partit pour rassembler Juda, mais il dépassa le terme qui lui était assigné.
6 and David says to Abishai, “Now Sheba son of Bichri does evil to us more than Absalom; you, take the servants of your lord, and pursue after him, lest he has found fortified cities for himself, and delivered himself [from] our eye.”
Alors David dit à Abisaï: "Chéba, fils de Bikhri, va maintenant devenir plus dangereux pour nous que ne fut Absalon. Prends, toi, les serviteurs de ton maître et mets-toi à sa poursuite: il pourrait avoir trouvé des villes fortes et échapper à nos regards."
7 And the men of Joab go out after him, and the Cherethite, and the Pelethite, and all the mighty men, and they go out from Jerusalem to pursue after Sheba son of Bichri;
A sa suite sortirent les gens de Joab, les Kerêthi et Pelêthi, tous les vaillants; ils partirent de Jérusalem à la poursuite de Chéba, fils de Bikhri.
8 they [are] near the great stone that [is] in Gibeon, and Amasa has gone before them, and Joab [is] girded; he has put his long robe on him, and on it a girdle—a sword [is] fastened on his loins in its sheath; and he has gone out, and it falls.
Comme ils se trouvaient près de la grande pierre qui est à Gabaon, ils virent arriver Amasa. Joab était alors ceint de son costume de guerre, par-dessus lequel était le ceinturon de l’épée, fixée près de la cuisse dans son fourreau. Elle s’échappa tandis qu’il s’avançait.
9 And Joab says to Amasa, “Are you [in] peace, my brother?” And the right hand of Joab lays hold on the beard of Amasa to give a kiss to him;
Joab dit à Amasa: "Comment vas-tu, mon frère?" et de la main droite il saisit la barbe d’Amasa pour l’embrasser.
10 and Amasa has not been watchful of the sword that [is] in the hand of Joab, and he strikes him with it to the fifth [rib], and sheds out his bowels to the earth, and he has not repeated [it] to him, and he dies; and Joab and his brother Abishai have pursued after Sheba son of Bichri.
Amasa ne se méfia pas de l’épée qui était dans la main de Joab; celui-ci l’en frappa dans l’aine, et les entrailles se répandirent à terre sans qu’il portât un second coup, et Amasa mourut, tandis que Joab, avec son frère Abisaï, poursuivait Chéba, fils de Bikhri.
11 And a man has stood by him, of the young men of Joab, and says, “He who has delight in Joab, and he who [is] for David—after Joab!”
Quelqu’un des serviteurs de Joab resta près du corps, en disant: "Qui aime Joab et qui tient pour David, que celui-là suive Joab!"
12 And Amasa is rolling himself in blood, in the midst of the highway, and the man sees that all the people have stood still, and he brings around Amasa out of the highway to the field, and casts a garment over him when he has seen that everyone who has come by him has stood still.
Cependant Amasa se roulait dans son sang au milieu du chemin; l’homme, voyant que tout le peuple s’arrêtait là, transporta Amasa de la route dans un champ et jeta un manteau sur son corps, parce qu’il avait remarqué que tous ceux qui arrivaient près de lui s’arrêtaient.
13 When he has been removed out of the highway, every man has passed on after Joab, to pursue after Sheba son of Bichri.
Une fois le corps enlevé de la route, chacun passa à la suite de Joab, afin de faire la chasse à Chéba, fils de Bikhri.
14 And he passes over through all the tribes of Israel to Abel, and to Beth-Maachah, and to all the Berites, and they are assembled, and also go in after him,
Celui-ci traversa toutes les tribus d’Israël jusqu’à Abêl dit aussi Beth-Maakha et tous les Bêrim; les autres se massèrent, le suivirent aussi de près,
15 and they go in and lay siege against him, in Abel of Beth-Maachah, and cast up a mound against the city, and it stands in a trench, and all the people who are [are] with Joab are destroying, to cause the wall to fall.
et, arrivés, l’assiégèrent dans Abêl Beth-Maakha; ils dressèrent contre la ville un remblai qui atteignit l’avant-mur, et déjà toute la troupe de Joab faisait effort contre la muraille pour la renverser,
16 And a wise woman calls out of the city, “Hear! Hear! Please say to Joab, Come near here, and I speak to you.”
lorsqu’une femme avisée cria de la ville: "Ecoutez, écoutez! Dites à Joab d’approcher pour que je lui parle!"
17 And he comes near to her, and the woman says, “Are you Joab?” And he says, “I [am].” And she says to him, “Hear the words of your handmaid”; and he says, “I am hearing.”
Et Joab s’approcha d’elle, et elle dit: "Es-tu Joab? Je le suis. Ecoute les paroles de ta servante. J’Écoute."
18 And she speaks, saying, “They spoke often in former times, saying, Let them diligently inquire at Abel, and so they finished.
Elle reprit en ces termes: "Il aurait fallu commencer par des pourparlers, c’est-à-dire interroger les habitants d’Abêl, et on eût ainsi tout terminé.
19 I [am] of the peaceable, faithful ones of Israel; you are seeking to destroy a city and mother in Israel; why do you swallow up the inheritance of YHWH?”
Nous sommes parmi les plus paisibles et fidèles en Israël, et tu voudrais anéantir une ville, une métropole d’Israël! Pourquoi veux-tu supprimer l’héritage du Seigneur?
20 And Joab answers and says, “Far be it—far be it from me; I do not swallow up nor destroy.
Loin de moi, répondit Joab, loin de moi de vouloir supprimer ou détruire!
21 The matter [is] not so; for a man of the hill-country of Ephraim—Sheba son of Bichri [is] his name—has lifted up his hand against the king, against David; give him up by himself, and I go away from the city.” And the woman says to Joab, “Behold, his head is cast to you over the wall.”
Tel n’est point le cas. Mais un homme de la montagne d’Ephraïm Chéba, fils de Bikhri, est son nom s’est insurgé contre le roi, contre David; livrez-le, lui seul, et je me retirerai de la ville. Eh bien! dit cette femme à Joab, sa tête te sera jetée par-dessus la muraille.
22 And the woman comes to all the people in her wisdom, and they cut off the head of Sheba son of Bichri, and cast [it] to Joab, and he blows with a horn, and they are scattered from the city, each [goes] to his tents, and Joab has turned back to Jerusalem to the king.
Et elle harangua tout le peuple dans sa sagesse, et on trancha la tête à Chéba, fils de Bikhri, et on la jeta à Joab; il sonna du cor et, s’éloignant de la ville, chacun regagna sa tente, tandis que Joab retournait à Jérusalem auprès du roi.
23 And Joab [is] over all the host of Israel, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada [is] over the Cherethite, and over the Pelethite,
Joab resta à la tête de l’armée d’Israël; Benaïa, fils de Joïada, commandait aux Kerêthi et Pelêthi;
24 and Adoram [is] over the tribute, and Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud [is] the remembrancer,
Adoram était préposé aux impôts; Josaphat, fils d’Ahiloud, archiviste;
25 and Sheva [is] scribe, and Zadok and Abiathar [are] priests,
Scheva, secrétaire; Çadok et Ebiathar, prêtres;
26 and also, Ira the Jairite has been minister to David.
et Ira, le Yaïri, lui aussi, était ministre de David.
