2 Kings 5

1 And Naaman, head of the host of the king of Aram, was a great man before his lord, and accepted of face, for YHWH had given salvation to Aram by him, and the man was mighty in valor, [but] leprous.

Naaman, général d'armée du roi de Syrie, était un homme en grand crédit auprès de son maître et un personnage considérable, car c'est par lui que l'Éternel avait donné la victoire aux Syriens, et c'était un héros vaillant, mais il avait la lèpre.

2 And the Arameans have gone out [by] troops, and they take a little girl captive out of the land of Israel, and she is before the wife of Naaman,

Or les Syriens étaient sortis en course par bandes et avaient ramené captive du pays d'Israël une jeune fille qui fut au service de la femme de Naaman.

3 and she says to her mistress, “O that my lord [were] before the prophet who [is] in Samaria; then he recovers him from his leprosy.”

Et elle dit à sa maîtresse: Ah! si mon maître était devant le prophète qui est à Samarie! Alors il le débarrasserait de sa lèpre.

4 And [one] goes in and declares [it] to his lord, saying, “Thus and thus the girl who [is] from the land of Israel has spoken.”

Alors il (Naaman) alla informer son maître en disant: De telle et telle manière a parlé la jeune fille du pays d'Israël.

5 And the king of Aram says, “Go, enter, and I send a letter to the king of Israel”; and he goes and takes in his hand ten talents of silver, and six thousand [pieces] of gold, and ten changes of garments.

Et le roi de Syrie dit: Pars, vas-y et j'enverrai une lettre au roi d'Israël. Et il partit prenant avec lui dix talents d'argent et six mille sicles d'or et dix habits de gala.

6 And he brings in the letter to the king of Israel, saying, “And now, at the coming in of this letter to you, behold, I have sent my servant Naaman to you, and you have recovered him from his leprosy.”

Et il porta au roi d'Israël la lettre conçue en ces termes… « avec cette lettre qui te parvient, voici, je t'adresse Naaman, mon serviteur, afin que tu le débarrasses de sa lèpre. »

7 And it comes to pass, at the king of Israel’s reading the letter, that he tears his garments and says, “Am I God, to put to death and to keep alive, that this [one] is sending to me to recover a man from his leprosy? For surely know now, and see, for he is presenting himself to me.”

Et à la lecture de la lettre, le roi d'Israël déchira ses habits et dit: Suis-je un dieu pour donner la mort ou la vie, qu'il s'adresse à moi pour que je débarrasse un homme de sa lèpre? Sans doute que, comprenez donc et voyez, il veut se donner prise sur moi.

8 And it comes to pass, at Elisha the man of God’s hearing that the king of Israel has torn his garments, that he sends to the king, saying, “Why have you torn your garments? Please let him come to me, and he knows that there is a prophet in Israel.”

Et lorsque Elisée, l'homme de Dieu, apprit que le roi d'Israël avait déchiré ses habits, il députa vers le roi pour lui dire: Pourquoi donc déchirer tes habits? Qu'il vienne donc à moi et éprouve qu'il y a un prophète en Israël!

9 And Naaman comes, with his horses and with his chariot, and stands at the opening of the house for Elisha;

Et Naaman vint avec ses chevaux et son char, et s'arrêta à la porte de la maison d'Elisée.

10 and Elisha sends a messenger to him, saying, “Go, and you have washed seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh turns back to you—and be clean.”

Et Elisée lui envoya un messager pour lui dire: Va et te plonge sept fois dans le Jourdain, et ta chair se remettra et tu seras pur.

11 And Naaman is angry, and goes on and says, “Behold, I said, He certainly comes out to me, and has stood and called in the Name of his God YHWH, and waved his hand over the place, and recovered the leper.

Alors Naaman fut irrité et s'en alla en disant: Voilà que je m'étais dit: il ne manquera pas de sortir vers moi et de paraître et d'invoquer le Nom de l'Éternel, son Dieu, et de mouvoir sa main sur la place et enlever ainsi la lèpre.

12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Do I not wash in them and I have been clean?” And he turns and goes on in fury.

L'Abana et le Pharphar, rivières de Damas, ne valent-ils pas mieux que toutes les eaux d'Israël? Ne puis-je pas m'y baigner et ressortir pur? Et il tourna le dos et partit en colère.

13 And his servants come near, and speak to him, and say, “My father, the prophet had spoken a great thing to you—do you not do [it]? And surely, when he has said to you, Wash, and be clean.”

Alors ses serviteurs l'abordèrent et lui parlèrent en ces termes: Mon père, le prophète t'a-t-il donc indiqué quelque chose de si difficile? Ne veux-tu pas le faire? d'autant plus qu'il t'a dit: Baigne-toi et te voilà pur!

14 And he goes down and dips in the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh turns back as the flesh of a little youth, and is clean.

Alors il descendit et se plongea dans le Jourdain sept fois d'après l'avis de l'homme de Dieu. Et sa chair revint à l'état de la chair d'un jeune garçon; et il se trouva pur.

15 And he turns back to the man of God, he and all his camp, and comes in, and stands before him, and says, “Now behold, I have known that there is not a God in all the earth except in Israel; and now, please take a blessing from your servant.”

Alors il retourna vers l'homme de Dieu, lui et toute son escorte, et arrivé il se présenta devant lui et dit: Oh! maintenant je reconnais qu'il n'existe pas de Dieu sur toute la terre, sinon dans Israël, et maintenant daigne accepter un présent de ton serviteur.

16 And he says, “YHWH lives, before whom I have stood—if I take [it]”; and he presses on him to take, and he refuses.

Et il répondit: Par la vie de l'Éternel sous les ordres de qui je suis, je n'accepte point. Et Naaman insista pour le faire accepter, mais il refusa.

17 And Naaman says, “If not, please let a couple of mules’ burden of earth be given to your servant, for your servant makes no more burnt-offering and sacrifice to other gods, but [only sacrifices] to YHWH.

Et Naaman dit: Au défaut de cela, qu'au moins il soit accordé à ton serviteur la charge de deux mulets de terre! Car désormais ton serviteur n'offrira plus ni holocauste, ni victime à d'autres dieux, mais uniquement à l'Éternel.

18 For in this thing may YHWH be propitious to your servant, in the coming in of my lord into the house of Rimmon to bow himself there, and he was supported by my hand, and I bowed myself [in] the house of Rimmon; for my bowing myself in the house of Rimmon, may YHWH now be propitious to your servant in this thing.”

Mais que sur un point ton serviteur obtienne indulgence de l'Éternel, lorsque mon Maître ira au temple de Rimmon pour s'y prosterner, et qu'il s'appuiera sur ma main et que je me prosternerai dans le temple de Rimmon! lors donc que je me prosternerai dans le temple de Rimmon, veuille l'Éternel pardonner à ton serviteur sur ce point!

19 And he says to him, “Go in peace.” And he goes from him a distance of land,

Et Elisée lui répondit: Va-t'en avec la paix. Et l'ayant quitté il fit quelque peu de chemin.

20 and Gehazi, servant of Elisha the man of God, says, “Behold, my lord has spared this Aramean Naaman, not to receive from his hand that which he brought; for YHWH lives; if I have run after him, then I have taken something from him.”

Alors Gehazi, valet d'Elisée, homme de Dieu, dit: Voilà que mon maître a ménagé Naaman, ce Syrien-là, en n'acceptant pas de sa main ce qu'il lui offrait! par la vie de l'Éternel, je vais courir après lui, et tirer de lui quelque chose.

21 And Gehazi pursues after Naaman, and Naaman sees one running after him, and comes down off the chariot to meet him, and says, “Is there peace?”

Et Gehazi se mit à courir après Naaman. Et Naaman voyant quelqu'un accourir après lui sauta en bas de son char et venant à sa rencontre il dit: Va-t-il bien?

22 And he says, “Peace; my lord has sent me, saying, Behold, now, this, two young men of the sons of the prophets have come to me from the hill-country of Ephraim; please give a talent of silver and two changes of garments to them.”

Et il répondit: Bien. Mon maître m'envoie te dire: Voilà qu'il vient de m'arriver deux jeunes gens de la montagne d'Ephraïm, d'entre les fils des prophètes: eh bien! donne pour eux un talent d'argent et deux habillements.

23 And Naaman says, “Be pleased, take two talents”; and he urges him, and binds two talents of silver in two purses, and two changes of garments, and gives [them] to two of his young men, and they carry [them] before him;

Et Naaman dit: Tu voudras bien accepter deux talents. Et il insista auprès de lui et serra les deux talents d'argent dans deux bourses et deux habillements et les remit a deux de ses valets qui les portèrent en le précédant.

24 and he comes to the high place, and takes [them] out of their hand, and lays [them] up in the house, and sends the men away, and they go.

Et arrivé à la colline il les reçut de leurs mains, et les cacha dans la maison, puis il congédia les gens qui partirent.

25 And he has come in, and stands by his lord, and Elisha says to him, “From where—Gehazi?” And he says, “Your servant did not go here or there.”

Quant à lui, une fois rentré il se présenta à son maître. Alors Elisée lui dit: D'où viens-tu, Gehazi? Et il répondit: Ton serviteur ne s'en était allé ni ici ni là.

26 And he says to him, “My heart did not go when the man turned from off his chariot to meet you; is it a time to take silver, and to take garments, and olives, and vines, and flock, and herd, and menservants, and maidservants?

Et il lui dit: Mon esprit s'en était-il allé, lorsque l'homme quitta son char pour venir à ta rencontre? Était-ce le moment de recevoir de l'argent et de recevoir des habillements, et puis des oliviers et des vignes et du menu et du gros bétail et des serviteurs et des servantes?

27 Indeed, the leprosy of Naaman cleaves to you and to your seed for all time”; and he goes out from before him—leprous as snow.

Que donc la lèpre de Naaman s'attache à toi et à ta race pour toujours! Et il sortit de sa présence couvert d'une lèpre comme la neige.
