1 Samuel 4
1 And the word of Samuel is to all Israel, and Israel goes out to meet the Philistines for battle, and they encamp by Eben-Ezer, and the Philistines have encamped in Aphek,
Sứ điệp của Sa-mu-ên được loan truyền khắp Ít-ra-ên. Lúc bấy giờ, Ít-ra-ên đang huy động quân đội để giao chiến với người Phi-li-tin. Họ kéo quân đến đóng ở Ê-bên-ê-xe, trong khi quân Phi-li-tin đóng ở A-phéc.
2 and the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and the battle spreads itself, and Israel is struck before the Philistines, and they strike among the ranks in the field about four thousand men.
Quân Phi-li-tin xuất trận và đánh bại Ít-ra-ên, giết chừng 4.000 người.
3 And the people come into the camp, and [the] elderly of Israel say, “Why has YHWH struck us today before the Philistines? We take the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH from Shiloh to ourselves, and it comes into our midst, and He saves us out of the hand of our enemies.”
Khi đoàn quân chiến bại trở về căn cứ, các trưởng lão Ít-ra-ên nói: “Tại sao Chúa Hằng Hữu để cho quân Phi-li-tin đánh bại chúng ta? Có lẽ chúng ta phải đem Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu từ Si-lô đến đây, như vậy Ngài sẽ ở giữa chúng ta và cứu chúng ta khỏi tay quân địch.”
4 And the people send to Shiloh, and they take from there the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH of Hosts, inhabiting the cherubim, and there [are] two sons of Eli with the Ark of the Covenant of God, Hophni and Phinehas.
Vậy, họ sai người đi Si-lô khiêng Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu Vạn Quân, Đấng ngự giữa các chê-ru-bim về. Hai con trai của Hê-li là Hóp-ni và Phi-nê-a đi theo Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời.
5 And it comes to pass, at the coming in of the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH to the camp, that all Israel shouts [with] a great shout, and the earth is moved.
Khi Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu vào đến trại, tất cả người Ít-ra-ên ở đó vui mừng, reo hò vang động!
6 And the Philistines hear the noise of the shouting, and say, “What [is] the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews?” And they perceive that the Ark of YHWH has come into the camp.
Người Phi-li-tin nghe tiếng reo hò liền hỏi nhau: “Vì sao có tiếng reo vang động trong trại Hê-bơ-rơ?” Và khi hay Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu vừa đến,
7 And the Philistines are afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp”; and they say, “Woe to us, for there has been nothing like this before.
họ hoảng sợ, bảo nhau: “Đức Chúa Trời vừa đến trại quân địch. Chúng ta nguy rồi! Chưa bao giờ có việc như thế này xảy ra cho chúng ta.
8 Woe to us, who delivers us out of the hand of these majestic gods? These [are] the gods who are striking the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.
Nguy rồi! Ai sẽ cứu chúng ta khỏi tay vị Thần oai nghi này? Đây là Thần đã tàn hại người Ai Cập bằng các tai họa khủng khiếp trong hoang mạc.
9 Strengthen yourselves, and become men, O Philistines, lest you do service to Hebrews, as they have done to you—then you have become men, and have fought.”
Hỡi người Phi-li-tin, can đảm lên! Phải anh dũng chiến đấu! Nếu không, anh em sẽ trở thành nô lệ cho người Hê-bơ-rơ như họ đã từng làm nô lệ cho anh em!”
10 And the Philistines fight, and Israel is struck, and they each flee to his tents, and the slaughter is very great, and thirty thousand footmen of Israel fall;
Và người Phi-li-tin tận lực chiến đấu đánh người Ít-ra-ên thảm bại, và giết 30.000 quân Ít-ra-ên. Số tàn quân chạy thoát về trại.
11 and the Ark of God has been taken, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, have died.
Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời bị cướp mất, hai con của Hê-li là Hóp-ni và Phi-nê-a cũng bị giết.
12 And a man of Benjamin runs out of the ranks, and comes into Shiloh, on that day, and his long robes [are] torn, and earth [is] on his head;
Một người thuộc đại tộc Bên-gia-min từ trận địa chạy thoát về Si-lô nội trong ngày đó, quần áo tả tơi, đầu đầy bụi đất.
13 and he comes in, and behold, Eli is sitting on the throne by the side of the way, watching, for his heart has been trembling for the Ark of God, and the man has come into the city and declares [it], and all the city cries out.
Hê-li đang ngồi trên một cái ghế đặt bên đường để trông tin, vì lo sợ cho Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời. Khi người kia chạy vào thành báo tin bại trận, dân trong thành đều la hoảng lên.
14 And Eli hears the noise of the cry and says, “What [is] the noise of this tumult?” And the man hurried, and comes in, and tells Eli.
Hê-li hỏi: “Việc gì náo động vậy?” Vừa lúc ấy, người Bên-gia-min chạy đến báo tin cho Hê-li.
15 And Eli is a son of ninety-eight years, and his eyes have stood, and he has not been able to see.
Bấy giờ Hê-li đã chín mươi tám tuổi và mắt không còn thấy.
16 And the man says to Eli, “I [am] he who has come out of the ranks, and I have fled out of the ranks today”; and he says, “What has been the matter, my son?”
Người kia nói: “Tôi rời trận địa hôm nay, thoát về đây.” Hê-li hỏi: “Việc như thế nào, con kể ta nghe.”
17 And he who is bearing tidings answers and says, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and also a great slaughter has been among the people, and also your two sons have died—Hophni and Phinehas—and the Ark of God has been captured.”
Người đem tin kể: “Người Ít-ra-ên đã bị thảm bại dưới tay quân Phi-li-tin. Vô số người bị giết, hai con trai của ông, Hóp-ni và Phi-nê-a, cũng bị giết. Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời đã bị cướp mất.”
18 And it comes to pass, at his mentioning the Ark of God, that he falls backward from off the throne, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dies, for the man [is] old and heavy, and he has judged Israel [for] forty years.
Nghe đến Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời, Hê-li từ trên ghế đặt bên cổng, ngã ngửa ra sau, gãy cổ mà chết, vì ông già cả, nặng nề. Ông làm phán quan Ít-ra-ên trong bốn mươi năm.
19 And his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, [is] pregnant, about to bear, and she hears the report of the taking of the Ark of God, that her father-in-law and her husband have died, and she bows, and bears, for her pains have turned on her.
Lúc ấy, con dâu của Hê-li, là vợ của Phi-nê-a, đang có thai gần ngày sinh. Khi nghe tin Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời bị cướp, ông gia, và chồng đều chết, nàng gập người xuống vì cơn đau đẻ đến bất ngờ.
20 And at the time of her death, the women who are standing by her say, “Do not fear, for you have borne a son,” she has not answered, nor set her heart [to it];
Lúc nàng hấp hối, cô đỡ nói: “Đừng sợ, bà vừa sinh một con trai!” Nhưng nàng không trả lời hay chú ý gì cả.
21 and she calls the youth Ichabod, saying, “Glory has removed from Israel,” because of the taking of the Ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
Nàng đặt tên cho con là Y-ca-bốt (nghĩa là “Vinh quang ở đâu?”), vì nàng nói: “Vinh quang của Ít-ra-ên không còn nữa!” Nàng đặt tên con như thế vì Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời đã bị cướp và cả ông gia lẫn chồng cũng qua đời.
22 And she says, “Glory has removed from Israel, for the Ark of God has been taken.”
Rồi nàng nói: “Vinh quang đã từ bỏ Ít-ra-ên, vì Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời đã bị cướp.”
