1 Samuel 11
1 And Nahash the Ammonite comes up, and encamps against Jabesh-Gilead, and all the men of Jabesh say to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we serve you.”
Så for Nahas, den Ammoniten, upp, och belade Jabes i Gilead. Och alle män i Jabes sade till Nahas: Gör ett förbund med oss, så vilje vi tjena dig.
2 And Nahash the Ammonite says to them, “For this I cut [a covenant] with you, in picking out every right eye of yours—and I have set it [for] a reproach on all Israel.”
Men Nahas, den Ammoniten, svarade dem: I så måtto vill jag göra ett förbund med eder, att jag stinger ut högra ögat på eder alla, och sätter eder till en försmädelse i hela Israel.
3 And [the] elderly of Jabesh say to him, “Leave us alone [for] seven days, and we send messengers into all the border of Israel: and if there is none saving us—then we have come out to you.”
Då sade till honom alle äldste i Jabes: Gif oss sju dagar, att vi måge sända bådskap i alla Israels gränsor; är då ingen hjelp, så vilje vi gå ut till dig.
4 And the messengers come to Gibeah of Saul, and speak the words in the ears of the people, and all the people lift up their voice and weep;
Så kommo bådskapen till Gibea Sauls, och sade detta för folkens öron. Då hof allt folket sina röst upp, och gret.
5 and behold, Saul has come out of the field after the herd, and Saul says, “What [is that] to the people, that they weep?” And they recount the words of the men of Jabesh to him.
Och si, då kom Saul utaf markene, gångandes bakefter sitt fä, och sade: Hvad skadar folkena, att det gråter? Då förtäljde de honom de mäns ord af Jabes.
6 And the Spirit of God prospers over Saul, in his hearing these words, and his anger burns greatly,
Då kom Guds Ande öfver honom, när han dessa orden hörde, och hans vrede förgrymmade sig svårliga.
7 and he takes a couple of oxen, and cuts them in pieces, and sends [them] through all the border of Israel, by the hand of the messengers, saying, “He who is not coming out after Saul and after Samuel—thus it is done to his oxen”; and the fear of YHWH falls on the people, and they come out as one man.
Och han tog ett par oxar, och styckade dem, och sände i alla Israels gränsor med bådskap, och lät säga: Den som icke utdrager efter Saul och Samuel, hans oxar skall man så göra. Så föll Herrans fruktan öfver folket, att de utdrogo såsom en man.
8 And he inspects them in Bezek, and the sons of Israel are three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
Och man räknade dem i Besek; och Israels barn voro tre resor hundradetusend män; och Juda barn tretiotusend.
9 And they say to the messengers who are coming, “Thus you say to the men of Jabesh-Gilead: Tomorrow you have safety—by the heat of the sun”; and the messengers come and declare [it] to the men of Jabesh, and they rejoice;
Och de sade till bådskapen, som komne voro: Säger de män i Jabes i Gilead: I morgon skolen I få hjelp, när solen är som hetast. Då desse bådskapen kommo, och förkunnade det de män i Jabes, vordo de glade.
10 and the men of Jabesh say [to the Ammonites], “Tomorrow we come out to you, and you have done to us according to all that [is] good in your eyes.”
Och de män i Jabes sade: I morgon vilje vi gå ut till eder, att I mågen göra oss allt det eder täckes.
11 And it comes to pass, on the next day, that Saul puts the people in three detachments, and they come into the midst of the camp in the morning-watch, and strike Ammon until the heat of the day; and it comes to pass that those left are scattered, and there have not been left two of them together.
Den andra morgonen skickade Saul folket i tre hopar, och de kommo i lägret i morgonväktene, och slogo de Ammoniter allt intill dagen vardt som hetast. Och de som öfverblefvo, vordo så förskingrade, att icke två blefvo tillhopa.
12 And the people say to Samuel, “Who is he that says, Saul reigns over us? Give up the men, and we put them to death.”
Då sade folket till Samuel: Hvar äro de, som sade: Skall Saul råda öfver oss? Låt de män komma här fram, att vi måge dräpa dem.
13 And Saul says, “There is no man put to death on this day, for today YHWH has worked salvation in Israel.”
Saul sade: På denna dagen skall ingen dö; ty Herren hafver i dag gjort salighet i Israel.
14 And Samuel says to the people, “Come and we go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there”;
Samuel sade till folket: Kommer, låter oss gå till Gilgal, och der förnya Konungariket.
15 and all the people go to Gilgal, and cause Saul to reign there before YHWH in Gilgal, and sacrifice sacrifices of peace-offerings there before YHWH, and Saul rejoices there—and all the men of Israel—very greatly.
Så drog allt folket till Gilgal, och gjorde der Saul till Konung för Herranom i Gilgal, och offrade tackoffer inför Herranom. Och Saul med alla Israels män fröjdade sig der ganska storliga.
