1 Kings 17
1 And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, says to Ahab, “YHWH, God of Israel, lives, before whom I have stood, there is not dew and rain these years, except according to my word.”
Élie, le Thesbite, un des habitants de Galaad, dit à Achab: « Yahweh est vivant, le Dieu d’Israël, devant qui je me tiens! Il n’y aura ces années-ci ni rosée ni pluie, sinon à ma parole. »
2 And the word of YHWH is to him, saying,
Et la parole de Yahweh fut adressée à Élie, en ces termes:
3 “Go from this [place]; and you have turned for yourself eastward, and been hidden by the Brook of Cherith that [is] on the front of the Jordan,
« Pars d’ici, dirige-toi vers l’orient et cache-toi au torrent de Carith, qui est en face du Jourdain.
4 and it has been [that] you drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to sustain you there.”
Tu boiras de l’eau du torrent, et j’ai commandé aux corbeaux de te nourrir là. »
5 And he goes and does according to the word of YHWH, indeed, he goes and dwells by the Brook of Cherith, that [is] on the front of the Jordan,
Il partit, et fit selon la parole de Yahweh; et il alla s’établir au torrent de Carith, qui est en face du Jourdain.
6 and the ravens are bringing bread and flesh to him in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening, and he drinks from the brook.
Les corbeaux lui apportaient du pain et de la viande le matin, du pain et de la viande le soir, et il buvait de l’eau du torrent.
7 And it comes to pass, at the end of [the] days, that the brook dries up, for there has been no rain in the land,
Mais, au bout d’un certain temps, le torrent fut à sec, car il n’était pas tombé de pluie dans le pays.
8 and the word of YHWH is to him, saying,
Alors la parole de Yahweh lui fut adressée en ces termes:
9 “Rise, go to Zarephath, that [belongs] to Sidon, and you have dwelt there; behold, I have commanded a widow woman to sustain you there.”
« Lève-toi, va à Sarephta, qui appartient à Sidon, et tu y demeureras; voici que j’ai ordonné là à une femme veuve de te nourrir. »
10 And he rises, and goes to Zarephath, and comes to the opening of the city, and behold, there [is] a widow woman gathering sticks, and he calls to her and says, “Please bring a little water to me in a vessel, and I drink.”
Il se leva et alla à Sarephta. Comme il arrivait à la porte de la ville, voici qu’il y avait là une femme veuve qui ramassait du bois. Il l’appela et lui dit: « Va me prendre, je te prie, un peu d’eau dans ce vase, afin que je boive. »
11 And she goes to bring [it], and he calls to her and says, “Please bring a morsel of bread to me in your hand.”
Et elle alla en prendre. Il l’appela de nouveau, et il dit: « Apporte-moi, je te prie, un morceau de pain dans ta main. »
12 And she says, “Your God YHWH lives, I do not have a cake, but the fullness of the hand of meal in a pitcher, and a little oil in a dish; and behold, I am gathering two sticks, and have gone in and prepared it for myself, and for my son, and we have eaten it—and died.”
Elle répondit: « Yahweh, ton Dieu, est vivant! Je n’ai rien de cuit, je n’ai qu’une poignée de farine dans un pot et un peu d’huile dans une cruche. Et voici que je ramasse deux morceaux de bois, afin que, rentrée à la maison, je prépare ce reste pour moi et pour mon fils; nous le mangerons, et nous mourrons ensuite. »
13 And Elijah says to her, “Do not fear, go, do according to your word, only make a little cake for me there, in the first place, and you have brought [it] out to me; and for you and for your son make [it] last;
Élie lui dit: « Ne crains point, rentre faire comme tu as dit. Seulement prépare-moi d’abord avec cela un petit gâteau, que tu m’apporteras; tu en feras ensuite pour toi et pour ton fils.
14 for thus said YHWH, God of Israel: The pitcher of meal is not consumed, and the dish of oil is not lacking, until the day of YHWH’s giving a shower on the face of the ground.”
Car ainsi parle Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël: Le pot de farine ne s’épuisera point, et la cruche d’huile ne diminuera point, jusqu’au jour où Yahweh fera tomber de la pluie sur la face du sol. »
15 And she goes, and does according to the word of Elijah, and she eats, she and he and her household [for many] days;
Elle s’en alla et fit selon la parole d’Élie; et pendant longtemps elle eut de quoi manger, elle et sa famille, ainsi qu’Élie.
16 the pitcher of meal was not consumed, and the dish of oil did not lack, according to the word of YHWH that He spoke by the hand of Elijah.
Le pot de farine ne s’épuisa pas, et la cruche d’huile ne diminua pas, selon la parole de Yahweh, qu’il avait dite par l’organe d’Élie.
17 And it comes to pass, after these things, the son of the woman, mistress of the house, has been sick, and his sickness is very severe until no breath has been left in him.
Après ces événements, le fils de la femme, maîtresse de la maison, devint malade, et sa maladie fut très violente, au point qu’il ne resta plus de souffle en lui.
18 And she says to Elijah, “What [is this] to me and to you, O man of God? You have come to me to cause my iniquity to be remembered, and to put my son to death!”
Alors cette femme dit à Élie: « Qu’ai-je à faire avec toi, homme de Dieu? Es-tu venu chez moi pour rappeler le souvenir de mes iniquités et pour faire mourir mon fils? »
19 And he says to her, “Give your son to me”; and he takes him out of her bosom, and takes him up to the upper chamber where he is abiding, and lays him on his own bed,
Il lui répondit: « Donne-moi ton fils. » Et il le prit du sein de la femme et, l’ayant monté dans la chambre haute où il demeurait, il le coucha sur son lit.
20 and cries to YHWH and says, “My God YHWH, have You also brought calamity on the widow with whom I am sojourning, to put her son to death?”
Puis, il invoqua Yahweh, en disant: « Yahweh, mon Dieu, auriez-vous encore fait tomber le malheur sur cette veuve chez laquelle je demeure, jusqu’à faire mourir son fils? »
21 And he stretches himself out on the boy three times, and calls to YHWH and says, “O YHWH my God, please let the soul of this boy return into his midst”;
Et il s’étendit trois fois sur l’enfant, en invoquant Yahweh et en disant: « Yahweh, mon Dieu, je vous en prie, que l’âme de cet enfant revienne au dedans de lui! »
22 and YHWH listens to the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the boy turns back into his midst, and he lives.
Yahweh écouta la voix d’Élie, et l’âme de l’enfant revint au dedans de lui, et il fut rendu à la vie.
23 And Elijah takes the boy, and brings him down from the upper chamber of the house, and gives him to his mother, and Elijah says, “See, your son lives!”
Élie prit l’enfant, le descendit de la chambre haute dans la maison et le donna à sa mère; et Élie dit: « Voici que ton fils est vivant. »
24 And the woman says to Elijah, “Now [by] this I have known that you [are] a man of God, and the word of YHWH in your mouth [is] truth.”
La femme dit à Élie: « Je reconnais maintenant que tu es un homme de Dieu, et que la parole de Yahweh dans ta bouche est vérité. »
