< 1 Corinthians 10 >

1 And I do not wish you to be ignorant, brothers, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,
he bhrAtaraH, asmatpitR^ipuruShAnadhi yUyaM yadaj nAtA na tiShThateti mama vA nChA, te sarvve meghAdhaHsthitA babhUvuH sarvve samudramadhyena vavrajuH,
2 and all were immersed into Moses in the cloud, and in the sea;
sarvve mUsAmuddishya meghasamudrayo rmajjitA babhUvuH
3 and all ate the same spiritual food,
sarvva ekam AtmikaM bhakShyaM bubhujira ekam AtmikaM peyaM papushcha
4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking of a spiritual rock following them, and the rock was the Christ;
yataste. anucharata AtmikAd achalAt labdhaM toyaM papuH so. achalaH khrIShTaeva|
5 but in the most of them God was not well pleased, for they were strewn in the wilderness,
tathA satyapi teShAM madhye. adhikeShu lokeShvIshvaro na santutoSheti hetoste prantare nipAtitAH|
6 and those things became types of us, for our not passionately desiring evil things, as also these desired.
etasmin te. asmAkaM nidarshanasvarUpA babhUvuH; ataste yathA kutsitAbhilAShiNo babhUvurasmAbhistathA kutsitAbhilAShibhi rna bhavitavyaM|
7 Neither become idolaters, as certain of them, as it has been written: “The people sat down to eat and to drink, and stood up to play”;
likhitamAste, lokA bhoktuM pAtu nchopavivishustataH krIDitumutthitA itayanena prakAreNa teShAM kaishchid yadvad devapUjA kR^itA yuShmAbhistadvat na kriyatAM|
8 neither may we commit whoredom, as certain of them committed whoredom, and there fell in one day twenty-three thousand;
aparaM teShAM kaishchid yadvad vyabhichAraH kR^itastena chaikasmin dine trayoviMshatisahasrANi lokA nipAtitAstadvad asmAbhi rvyabhichAro na karttavyaH|
9 neither may we tempt the Christ, as also certain of them tempted, and perished by the serpents;
teShAM kechid yadvat khrIShTaM parIkShitavantastasmAd bhuja Ngai rnaShTAshcha tadvad asmAbhiH khrIShTo na parIkShitavyaH|
10 neither murmur, as also some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer.
teShAM kechid yathA vAkkalahaM kR^itavantastatkAraNAt hantrA vinAshitAshcha yuShmAbhistadvad vAkkalaho na kriyatAM|
11 And all these things happened to those persons as types, and they were written for our admonition, to whom the end of the ages came, (aiōn g165)
tAn prati yAnyetAni jaghaTire tAnyasmAkaM nidarshanAni jagataH sheShayuge varttamAnAnAm asmAkaM shikShArthaM likhitAni cha babhUvuH| (aiōn g165)
12 so that he who is thinking to stand—let him observe, lest he fall.
ataeva yaH kashchid susthiraMmanyaH sa yanna patet tatra sAvadhAno bhavatu|
13 No temptation has taken you—except that of man; and God is faithful, who will not permit you to be tempted above what you are able, but He will make, with the temptation, also the outlet, for your being able to bear [it].
mAnuShikaparIkShAtiriktA kApi parIkShA yuShmAn nAkrAmat, Ishvarashcha vishvAsyaH so. atishaktyAM parIkShAyAM patanAt yuShmAn rakShiShyati, parIkShA cha yad yuShmAbhiH soDhuM shakyate tadarthaM tayA saha nistArasya panthAnaM nirUpayiShyati|
14 For this reason, my beloved, flee from the idolatry;
he priyabhrAtaraH, devapUjAto dUram apasarata|
15 as to wise men I speak—judge what I say.
ahaM yuShmAn vij nAn matvA prabhAShe mayA yat kathyate tad yuShmAbhi rvivichyatAM|
16 The cup of the blessing that we bless—is it not the fellowship of the blood of the Christ? The bread that we break—is it not the fellowship of the body of the Christ?
yad dhanyavAdapAtram asmAbhi rdhanyaM gadyate tat kiM khrIShTasya shoNitasya sahabhAgitvaM nahi? yashcha pUpo. asmAbhi rbhajyate sa kiM khrIShTasya vapuShaH sahabhAgitvaM nahi?
17 Because one bread, one body, are we the many—for we all partake of the one bread.
vayaM bahavaH santo. apyekapUpasvarUpA ekavapuHsvarUpAshcha bhavAmaH, yato vayaM sarvva ekapUpasya sahabhAginaH|
18 See Israel according to the flesh! Are those not eating the sacrifices in the fellowship of the altar?
yUyaM shArIrikam isrAyelIyavaMshaM nirIkShadhvaM| ye balInAM mAMsAni bhu njate te kiM yaj navedyAH sahabhAgino na bhavanti?
19 What do I say then? That an idol is anything? Or that a sacrifice offered to an idol is anything?
ityanena mayA kiM kathyate? devatA vAstavikI devatAyai balidAnaM vA vAstavikaM kiM bhavet?
20 [No, ] but that the things that the nations sacrifice—they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not wish you to come into the fellowship of the demons.
tannahi kintu bhinnajAtibhi rye balayo dIyante ta IshvarAya tannahi bhUtebhyaeva dIyante tasmAd yUyaM yad bhUtAnAM sahabhAgino bhavathetyahaM nAbhilaShAmi|
21 You are not able to drink the cup of the LORD and the cup of demons; you are not able to partake of the table of the LORD and of the table of demons;
prabhoH kaMsena bhUtAnAmapi kaMsena pAnaM yuShmAbhirasAdhyaM; yUyaM prabho rbhojyasya bhUtAnAmapi bhojyasya sahabhAgino bhavituM na shaknutha|
22 do we arouse the LORD to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
vayaM kiM prabhuM sparddhiShyAmahe? vayaM kiM tasmAd balavantaH?
23 All things are lawful to me, but not all things are profitable; all things are lawful to me, but not all things build up;
mAM prati sarvvaM karmmApratiShiddhaM kintu na sarvvaM hitajanakaM sarvvam apratiShiddhaM kintu na sarvvaM niShThAjanakaM|
24 let no one seek his own—but each another’s.
AtmahitaH kenApi na cheShTitavyaH kintu sarvvaiH parahitashcheShTitavyaH|
25 Eat whatever is sold in the meat-market, not inquiring, because of the conscience,
ApaNe yat krayyaM tad yuShmAbhiH saMvedasyArthaM kimapi na pR^iShTvA bhujyatAM
26 for the earth and its fullness [are] the LORD’s;
yataH pR^ithivI tanmadhyastha ncha sarvvaM parameshvarasya|
27 and if anyone of the unbelieving calls you, and you wish to go, eat all that is set before you, inquiring nothing, because of the conscience;
aparam avishvAsilokAnAM kenachit nimantritA yUyaM yadi tatra jigamiShatha tarhi tena yad yad upasthApyate tad yuShmAbhiH saMvedasyArthaM kimapi na pR^iShTvA bhujyatAM|
28 and if anyone may say to you, “This is a thing sacrificed to an idol,” do not eat, because of that one who showed [it], and of the conscience, for the LORD’s [is] the earth and its fullness:
kintu tatra yadi kashchid yuShmAn vadet bhakShyametad devatAyAH prasAda iti tarhi tasya j nApayituranurodhAt saMvedasyArtha ncha tad yuShmAbhi rna bhoktavyaM| pR^ithivI tanmadhyastha ncha sarvvaM parameshvarasya,
29 and conscience, I say, not of yourself, but of the other, for why [is it] that my liberty is judged by another’s conscience?
satyametat, kintu mayA yaH saMvedo nirddishyate sa tava nahi parasyaiva|
30 And if I partake thankfully, why am I spoken of [as] evil, for that for which I give thanks?
anugrahapAtreNa mayA dhanyavAdaM kR^itvA yad bhujyate tatkAraNAd ahaM kuto nindiShye?
31 Whether, then, you eat, or drink, or do anything, do all to the glory of God;
tasmAd bhojanaM pAnam anyadvA karmma kurvvadbhi ryuShmAbhiH sarvvameveshvarasya mahimnaH prakAshArthaM kriyatAM|
32 become offenseless, both to Jews and Greeks, and to the Assembly of God;
yihUdIyAnAM bhinnajAtIyAnAm Ishvarasya samAjasya vA vighnajanakai ryuShmAbhi rna bhavitavyaM|
33 as I also please all in all things, not seeking my own profit, but that of many—that they may be saved.
ahamapyAtmahitam acheShTamAno bahUnAM paritrANArthaM teShAM hitaM cheShTamAnaH sarvvaviShaye sarvveShAM tuShTikaro bhavAmItyanenAhaM yadvat khrIShTasyAnugAmI tadvad yUyaM mamAnugAmino bhavata|
