< Psalms 91 >
1 He who sitteth under the secret protection of the Most High, shall rest under the shadow of the Almighty.
You whose home is the shelter of God Most High, whose abode is the shadow of God Almighty,
2 I will say of the Lord, who is my refuge and my stronghold, my God, in whom I ever trust,
can say to the Lord, “My refuge, my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
3 That he will surely deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the pestilence of destruction.
For he saves you from fowler’s snare, from deadly plague,
4 With his pinions will he cover thee, and under his wings shalt thou find shelter: shield and buckler is his truth.
he shelters you with his pinions, and under his wings you can hide. His truth will be a shield and buckler.
5 Thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night; nor of the arrow that flieth by day;
You need not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 Nor of the pestilence that stalketh in darkness; nor of the deadly disease that wasteth at noonday.
nor the plague that stalks in darkness, nor the pestilence raging at noon.
7 There shall fall at thy side a thousand, and ten thousand at thy right hand; unto thee [however] shall it not come nigh.
A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand: but it will not draw near to you.
8 Only with thy eyes shalt thou behold it, and see the recompense of the wicked.
You will only look on with your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished.
9 Because thou hast [said], The Lord is my protection, the Most High hast thou made thy refuge:
You have made the Lord your refuge, you have made the Most High your defence.
10 No evil shall befall thee, nor shall any plague come nigh unto thy tent.
You will never be met by misfortune, no plague will come near your tent,
11 For his angels will he give charge concerning thee, to guard thee on all thy ways.
for he orders his angels to guard you, wherever you go.
12 Upon [their] hands shall they bear thee, that thou mayest not dash against a stone thy foot.
They will carry you with their hands, so you don’t hurt your foot on a stone.
13 Upon the fierce lion and asp shalt thou tread: thou shalt trample under foot the young lion and serpent.
You will trample down lions and snakes, tread on young lions and cobras.
14 Because he hath fixed his desire upon me, therefore will I release him: I will set him on high, because he knoweth my name.
“Because of their love for me, I will deliver them, I will protect those who trust my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him: with him will I be in distress; I will deliver him, and grant him honor.
I will answer their cry and be with them in trouble, bringing them forth into safety and honor.
16 With length of days will I satisfy him, and I will let him see my salvation.
I will give them a life of many days, I will show them my salvation.”
