< Psalms 91 >
1 He who sitteth under the secret protection of the Most High, shall rest under the shadow of the Almighty.
Those who live under the protection of the Most High are kept safe by the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, who is my refuge and my stronghold, my God, in whom I ever trust,
This is what I say about the Lord: “He is the one who defends and protects me. He is my God, and I trust in him.”
3 That he will surely deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the pestilence of destruction.
For he will save you from hidden traps and deadly diseases.
4 With his pinions will he cover thee, and under his wings shalt thou find shelter: shield and buckler is his truth.
He will hide you under his feathers, and shelter you with his wings. His trustworthiness shields and protects you.
5 Thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night; nor of the arrow that flieth by day;
You will not be afraid of terror at night or an arrow that flies in the day,
6 Nor of the pestilence that stalketh in darkness; nor of the deadly disease that wasteth at noonday.
or disease that attacks at night, or catastrophe that falls at noon.
7 There shall fall at thy side a thousand, and ten thousand at thy right hand; unto thee [however] shall it not come nigh.
A thousand may fall beside you, ten thousand die at your right hand, but you won't be harmed.
8 Only with thy eyes shalt thou behold it, and see the recompense of the wicked.
You only have to open your eyes and you will see how the wicked are repaid.
9 Because thou hast [said], The Lord is my protection, the Most High hast thou made thy refuge:
Because you have made the Lord your protection, and the Most High your home,
10 No evil shall befall thee, nor shall any plague come nigh unto thy tent.
nothing evil will happen to you; no plague will come near where you live.
11 For his angels will he give charge concerning thee, to guard thee on all thy ways.
For he will command his angels to take care of you in everything you do.
12 Upon [their] hands shall they bear thee, that thou mayest not dash against a stone thy foot.
They will hold you up with their hands so you won't trip and fall down.
13 Upon the fierce lion and asp shalt thou tread: thou shalt trample under foot the young lion and serpent.
You will trample lions and snakes; you will tread young lions and serpents underfoot.
14 Because he hath fixed his desire upon me, therefore will I release him: I will set him on high, because he knoweth my name.
I will save anyone who loves me; I will protect anyone who accepts me.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him: with him will I be in distress; I will deliver him, and grant him honor.
When they call out to me for help, I will answer; when they are in trouble, I will be with them. I will save and honor them.
16 With length of days will I satisfy him, and I will let him see my salvation.
I will grant them long lives, and show them my salvation.
