Psalms 8

1 “To the chief musician upon Gittith, a psalm of David.” O Eternal One our Lord, how excellent is thy name on all the earth! thou who hast set thy majesty above the heavens.

Au chef des chantres. Sur la Ghitit. Psaume de David. Eternel, notre Seigneur! que ton nom est glorieux par toute la terre! car tu as répandu ta majesté sur les cieux.

2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou founded [thy] might, because of thy opponents, that thou mightest bring to silence the enemy and him that seeketh vengeance.

Par la bouche des enfants et des nourrissons tu as fondé ta puissance. En dépit de tes détracteurs, tu réduis à l’impuissance ennemis et adversaires rancuniers.

3 When I behold thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast established: —

Lorsque je contemple tes cieux, œuvre de ta main, la lune et les étoiles que tu as formées…

4 What is the mortal, that thou rememberest him? and the son of man, that thou thinkest of him:

Qu’est donc l’homme, que tu penses à lui? Le fils d’Adam, que tu le protèges?

5 Yet thou hast made him but a little less than angels, and hast crowned him with honor and glory.

Pourtant tu l’as fait presque l’égal des êtres divins; tu l’as couronné de gloire et de magnificence!

6 Thou hast given him dominion over the works of thy hands; every thing hast thou placed beneath his feet:

tu lui as donné l’empire sur les œuvres de tes mains, et mis tout à ses pieds:

7 Flocks and herds altogether, and also the beasts of the field;

brebis et taureaux, tous ensemble, et aussi les bêtes des champs,

8 The birds of heaven, and the fishes of the sea, whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

oiseaux du ciel et poissons de la mer, ce qui parcourt les routes des océans.

9 O Eternal One our Lord, how excellent is thy name on all the earth!

Eternel, notre Seigneur! que ton nom est glorieux par toute la terre!
