Psalms 78
1 “A Maskil of Assaph.” Give ear, O my people, to my instruction: incline thy ear to the words of my mouth.
Ein Lehrgedicht von Asaph. Gib acht, mein Volk, auf meine Belehrung,
2 I will open with a parable my mouth: I will utter riddles out of ancient times;
Ich will auftun meinen Mund zur Rede in Sprüchen, will Rätsel verkünden von der Vorzeit her.
3 Which we have heard and know, and which our fathers have related unto us.
Was wir gehört und erfahren und unsere Väter uns erzählt haben,
4 We will not conceal them from their children, relating to the latest generation the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful deeds which he hath done.
das wollen wir ihren Kindern nicht verschweigen, sondern dem künftgen Geschlecht verkünden die Ruhmestaten des HERRN und seine Stärke und die Wunder, die er getan hat.
5 Yea, he established a testimony in Jacob, and instituted a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
Denn er hat ein Zeugnis aufgerichtet in Jakob und festgestellt in Israel ein Gesetz, von dem er unsern Vätern gebot, es ihren Kindern kundzutun,
6 In order that the latest generation might know them, even the children that are to be born; that they may arise and relate them to their children;
auf daß die Nachwelt Kenntnis davon erhielte: die Kinder, die geboren würden, sollten aufstehn und ihren Kindern davon erzählen,
7 That they may place in God their hope, and not forget the doings of God, but observe his commandments;
daß sie auf Gott ihr Vertrauen setzten und die Taten Gottes nicht vergäßen und seine Gebote befolgten,
8 And that they may not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that had not directed their heart firmly, and whose spirit was not faithful to God.
daß sie nicht wie ihre Väter würden, ein trotziges und widerspenstiges Geschlecht, ein Geschlecht mit wankelmütigem Herzen, dessen Geist sich nicht zuverlässig zu Gott hielt.
9 The children of Ephraim, like well-armed archers, that turn round on the day of battle,
Ephraims Söhne, bogengerüstete Schützen, haben den Rücken gewandt am Tage des Kampfes.
10 Kept not the covenant of God, and in his law they refused to walk;
Sie hielten den gottgestifteten Bund nicht und wollten nicht wandeln in seinem Gesetz;
11 And they forgot his deeds, as also his wonders, which he had permitted them to see.
nein, sie vergaßen seine Taten und seine Wunder, die er sie hatte sehen lassen.
12 In the presence of their fathers did he do wonders, in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zo'an.
Vor ihren Vätern hatte er Wunder getan im Lande Ägypten, im Gefilde von Zoan.
13 He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters stand upright as a wall.
Er spaltete das Meer und ließ sie hindurchziehn und türmte die Wasser auf wie einen Wall;
14 And he led them with the cloud by day, and all the night with a light of fire.
er leitete sie bei Tag durch die Wolke und während der ganzen Nacht durch Feuerschein;
15 He split rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the mighty deep.
er spaltete Felsen in der Wüste und tränkte sie reichlich wie mit Fluten;
16 And he brought forth running streams out of the rock, and caused water to run down like rivers.
Bäche ließ er aus dem Felsen hervorgehn und Wasser gleich Strömen niederfließen.
17 But they repeated to sin yet more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
Dennoch fuhren sie fort, gegen ihn zu sündigen, und widerstrebten dem Höchsten in der Wüste;
18 And they tempted God in their heart, by asking food for their desire.
ja, sie versuchten Gott in ihren Herzen, indem sie Speise verlangten für ihr Gelüst,
19 Yea, they spoke against God: they said, Will God be able to set in order a table in the wilderness?
und redeten gegen Gott mit den Worten: »Kann Gott wohl einen Tisch in der Wüste uns decken?
20 Behold, he smote the rock, so that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed: shall he also be able to give bread? or can he provide flesh for his people?
Wohl hat er den Felsen geschlagen, daß Wasser flossen heraus und Bäche sich ergossen; doch wird er auch vermögen Brot zu geben oder Fleisch seinem Volke zu schaffen?«
21 Therefore, when the Lord heard this, he became wroth: and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also ascended against Israel,
Drum, als der HERR das hörte, ergrimmte er: Feuer entbrannte gegen Jakob, und Zorn stieg auf gegen Israel,
22 Because they had not believed in God, and had not trusted in his salvation.
weil sie an Gott nicht glaubten und auf seine Hilfe nicht vertrauten.
23 Then he ordained the skies from above, and the doors of heaven he opened;
Und doch gebot er den Wolken droben und tat die Türen des Himmels auf,
24 And he let rain down upon them manna to eat, and the corn of heaven gave he unto them.
ließ Manna auf sie regnen zum Essen und gab ihnen himmlisches Brotkorn:
25 Angels' bread did man eat: he sent them provision to satisfaction.
Engelspeise aßen sie allesamt, Reisekost sandte er ihnen zur Sättigung.
26 He caused an east wind to pass along the heavens; and he led forth by his strength the south wind.
Hinfahren ließ er den Ostwind am Himmel und führte durch seine Kraft den Südwind herbei;
27 And he let rain upon them flesh [as plentiful] as the dust, and winged birds like the sand of the sea;
Fleisch ließ er auf sie regnen wie Staub und beschwingte Vögel wie Meeressand;
28 And he let them fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.
mitten in ihr Lager ließ er sie fallen, rings um ihre Wohnungen her.
29 And they ate, and were greatly satisfied, and what they longed for he brought unto them.
Da aßen sie und wurden reichlich satt, und was sie gewünscht, gewährte er ihnen.
30 They were not estranged from their longing, yet was their food in their mouth:
Noch hatten sie ihres Gelüsts sich nicht entschlagen, noch hatten sie ihre Speise in ihrem Munde,
31 When the wrath of God ascended against them, and he slew some of the fattest of them, and the young men of Israel did he strike down.
da stieg der Ingrimm Gottes gegen sie auf und erwürgte die kräftigen Männer unter ihnen und streckte Israels junge Mannschaft zu Boden.
32 With all this they sinned again, and believed not in his wonders.
Trotz alledem sündigten sie weiter und glaubten nicht an seine Wunder.
33 Therefore he caused their days to come to an end in nought, and their years in dread.
Drum ließ er ihre Tage vergehn wie einen Hauch und ihre Jahre in angstvoller Hast.
34 When he slew them, then did they seek him, and they returned and inquired earnestly after God.
Wenn er sie sterben ließ, dann fragten sie nach ihm und kehrten um und suchten Gott eifrig
35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the most high God their redeemer.
und dachten daran, daß Gott ihr Fels sei und Gott, der Höchste, ihr Erlöser.
36 Nevertheless they prayed insincerely to him with their mouth, and with their tongue they lied unto him.
Doch sie heuchelten ihm mit ihrem Munde und belogen ihn mit ihrer Zunge;
37 For their heart was not firm with him, and they were not faithful in his covenant.
denn ihr Herz hing nicht fest an ihm, und sie hielten nicht treu an seinem Bunde.
38 But he, being merciful, forgave the iniquity, and destroyed [them] not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not awaken all his fury.
Doch er war barmherzig, vergab die Schuld und vertilgte sie nicht, nein, immer wieder hielt er seinen Zorn zurück und ließ nicht seinen ganzen Grimm erwachen;
39 And he remembered that they are but flesh, a spirit that passeth away, and returneth not again.
denn er dachte daran, daß Fleisch sie waren, ein Windhauch, der hinfährt und nicht wiederkehrt.
40 How oft did they rebel against him in the wilderness, grieve him in the desert!
Wie oft widerstrebten sie ihm in der Wüste, kränkten sie ihn in der Öde!
41 Yea, they once more tempted God, and set limits to the Holy One of Israel.
Und immer aufs neue versuchten sie Gott und betrübten den Heiligen Israels.
42 They remembered not his hand, the day when he ransomed them from the adversary;
Sie dachten nicht mehr an seine starke Hand, an den Tag, wo er sie vom Bedränger erlöste,
43 When he displayed in Egypt his signs, and his wonderful tokens in the fields of Zo'an.
als er seine Zeichen in Ägypten tat, seine Wunder im Gefilde von Zoan.
44 And he changed their rivers into blood; and their running streams, that they could not drink [of them].
Er verwandelte dort in Blut ihre Ströme, so daß man ihr fließendes Wasser nicht trinken konnte;
45 He sent out among them various wild beasts, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.
er sandte unter sie Ungeziefer, das sie fraß, und Frösche, die ihnen Verderben brachten;
46 And he gave unto the cricket their products, and their labor unto the locust.
er gab ihre Ernte den Freßgrillen preis und die Frucht ihrer Arbeit den Heuschrecken;
47 He slew with hail their vines, and their sycamore-trees with ice-bolts.
er zerschlug ihre Reben mit Hagel, ihre Maulbeerfeigenbäume mit Schloßen;
48 And he surrendered to the hail their cattle, and their herds to the lightning's flashes.
er gab ihr Vieh dem Hagel preis und ihren Besitz den Blitzen;
49 He let loose against them the fierceness of his anger, wrath and indignation, and distress, a host of angels of misfortune.
er sandte gegen sie seines Zornes Glut, Wut und Grimm und Drangsal: eine Schar von Unglücksengeln;
50 He leveled a path for his anger; he withheld not from death their soul, and their life he surrendered to the pestilence;
er ließ seinem Ingrimm freien Lauf, entzog ihre Seele nicht dem Tode, überließ vielmehr ihr Leben der Pest;
51 And he smote all the first-born in Egypt; the first of their strength in the tents of Ham;
er ließ alle Erstgeburt in Ägypten sterben, der Manneskraft Erstlinge in den Zelten Hams.
52 But he caused his own people to depart like flocks, and guided them like a drove in the wilderness.
Dann ließ er sein Volk ausziehn wie Schafe und leitete sie in der Wüste wie eine Herde
53 And he led them in safety, so that they felt no dread; but the sea covered over their enemies.
und führte sie sicher, so daß sie nicht bangten; ihre Feinde aber bedeckte das Meer.
54 And he brought them to his holy territory, even to this mount, which his right hand had acquired.
So brachte er sie nach seinem heiligen Gebiet, in das Bergland, das er mit seiner Rechten erworben,
55 And he drove out from before them nations, and divided them by the measuring-line as an inheritance, and he caused to dwell in their tents the tribes of Israel.
und vertrieb vor ihnen her die Völker, verloste ihr Gebiet als erblichen Besitz und ließ in ihren Zelten die Stämme Israels wohnen.
56 Yet they tempted and rebelled against the most high God, and his testimonies they kept not;
Doch sie versuchten und reizten Gott, den Höchsten, und hielten sich nicht an seine Gebote,
57 But swerved aside, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers; they turned about like a deceitful bow.
sondern fielen ab und handelten treulos, ihren Vätern gleich; sie versagten wie ein trüglicher Bogen
58 And they provoked him to anger with their high-places, and with their graven images they moved him to jealousy.
und erbitterten ihn durch ihren Höhendienst und reizten ihn zum Eifer durch ihre Götzenbilder.
59 God heard this, and he became wroth, and felt greatly disgusted with Israel;
Als Gott es vernahm, ergrimmte er und verwarf Israel ganz und gar:
60 And he cast off the dwelling at Shiloh, the tabernacle where he had dwelt among men;
er gab seine Wohnung in Silo auf, das Zelt, das er aufgeschlagen unter den Menschen;
61 And he gave up his strength unto captivity, and his glory into the adversary's hand.
er ließ seine Macht in Gefangenschaft fallen und seine Zier in die Hand des Feindes;
62 And he surrendered his people unto the sword; and with his inheritance was he wroth.
er gab sein Volk dem Schwerte preis und war entrüstet über sein Erbteil;
63 His young men the fire devoured; and his virgins were not demanded in marriage.
seine jungen Männer fraß das Feuer, und seine Jungfraun blieben ohne Brautlied;
64 His priests fell by the sword; and his widows did not weep.
seine Priester fielen durchs Schwert, und seine Witwen konnten keine Totenklage halten.
65 Then awoke the Lord as one that sleepeth, like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.
Da erwachte der Allherr wie ein Schlafender, wie ein vom Wein übermannter Kriegsheld;
66 And he smote his enemies backward: a perpetual disgrace on them.
er schlug seine Feinde von hinten und gab sie ewiger Schande preis.
67 Yet was he disgusted with the tent of Joseph, and of the tribe of Ephraim he made not choice;
Auch verwarf er das Zelt Josephs und erwählte nicht den Stamm Ephraim,
68 But he chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
sondern erwählte den Stamm Juda, den Berg Zion, den er liebgewonnen;
69 And he built like high [mountains] his sanctuary, like the earth which he hath founded for ever.
und er baute den ragenden Bergen gleich sein Heiligtum, fest wie die Erde, die er auf ewig gegründet.
70 And he made choice of David his servant, and took him from the sheep-folds:
Dann erwählte er David, seinen Knecht, den er wegnahm von den Hürden des Kleinviehs;
71 From following the ewes with young he brought him, to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
von den Mutterschafen holte er ihn, daß er Jakob weide, sein Volk, und Israel, seinen Erbbesitz.
72 And he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and by the skilfulness of his hands did he lead them.
Der weidete sie mit redlichem Herzen und leitete sie mit kundiger Hand.
