Psalms 44
1 “To the chief musician, for the sons of Korach, a Maskil.” O God, with our ears have we heard, our fathers have told us, deeds which thou hadst done in their days, in times of old.
Al capo de’ musici. Dei figliuoli di Core. Cantico. O Dio, noi abbiamo udito coi nostri orecchi, i nostri padri ci hanno raccontato l’opera che compisti ai loro giorni, ai giorni antichi.
2 Thou, with thy hand, didst indeed drive out nations, and plant them; thou didst ill-treat people, and cause them to spread out.
Tu con la tua mano scacciasti le nazioni e stabilisti i nostri padri; distruggesti dei popoli per estender loro.
3 For not by their sword did they obtain possession of the land, and their own arm brought them no victory; but thy right hand, and thy arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst given them thy favor.
Poiché essi non conquistarono il paese con la loro spada, né fu il loro braccio che li salvò, ma la tua destra, il tuo braccio, la luce del tuo volto, perché li gradivi.
4 Thou art my King, O God: ordain salvation for Jacob.
Tu sei il mio re, o Dio, ordina la salvezza di Giacobbe!
5 Through thee will we butt down our assailants: through thy name will we tread under foot our opponents.
Con te noi abbatteremo i nostri nemici, nel tuo nome calpesteremo quelli che si levan contro a noi.
6 For not in my bow will I trust, and my sword shall not help me.
Poiché non è nel mio arco che io confido, e non è la mia spada che mi salverà;
7 But thou helpest us against our assailants, and those that hate us thou puttest to shame.
ma sei tu che ci salvi dai nostri nemici e rendi confusi quelli che ci odiano.
8 Of God we boast all the day, and to thy name will we give thanks for ever. (Selah)
In Dio noi ci glorieremo, ogni giorno e celebreremo il tuo nome in perpetuo. (Sela)
9 But [now] thou hast cast off, and put us to the blush, and goest not forth with our armies.
Ma ora ci hai reietti e coperti d’onta, e non esci più coi nostri eserciti.
10 Thou causest us to turn back from before our assailant: and they who hate us take spoil for themselves.
Tu ci fai voltar le spalle davanti al nemico, e quelli che ci odiano ci depredano.
11 Thou givest us up like sheep for food, and among the nations hast thou dispersed us.
Ci hai dati via come pecore da mangiare, e ci hai dispersi fra le nazioni.
12 Thou sellest thy people for no value, and acquirest no gain by their price.
Tu vendi il tuo popolo per un nulla, e non ti sei tenuto alto nel fissarne il prezzo.
13 Thou renderest us a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and a derision to those that are round about us.
Tu ci fai oggetto d’obbrobrio per i nostri vicini, di beffe e di scherno per quelli che ci stan d’intorno.
14 Thou renderest us a by-word among the nations, a shaking of the head among the people.
Tu ci rendi la favola delle nazioni, e i popoli scuotono il capo, quando si tratta di noi.
15 All the day is my disgrace before me, and the shame of my face covereth me;
Tuttodì l’onta mia mi sta dinanzi, e la vergogna mi cuopre la faccia
16 Because of the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and him that seeketh vengeance.
all’udire chi mi vitupera e m’oltraggia, al vedere il nemico ed il vendicativo.
17 All this is come over us, yet have we not forgotten thee; nor have we dealt falsely by thy covenant;
Tutto questo ci è avvenuto. Eppure non t’abbiam dimenticato e non siamo stati infedeli al tuo patto.
18 Our heart is not moved backward, nor hath our step turned aside from thy path:
Il nostro cuore non si è rivolto indietro, e i nostri passi non si sono sviati dal tuo sentiero,
19 Even when thou didst crush us in the abode of monsters, and cover us with the shadow of death.
perché tu ci avessi a fiaccare cacciandoci in dimore di sciacalli, perché tu avessi a stender su noi l’ombra della morte.
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange God:
Se avessimo dimenticato il nome del nostro Dio, e avessimo teso le mani verso un dio straniero,
21 Would not God search out this? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
Dio non l’avrebbe egli scoperto? Poich’egli conosce i segreti del cuore.
22 But for thy sake are we slain all the day; we are counted as flocks [destined] for slaughter.
Anzi è per cagion tua che siamo ogni dì messi a morte, e reputati come pecore da macello.
23 Awake, wherefore wilt thou sleep, O Lord? arise, abandon us not for ever.
Risvegliati! Perché dormi, o Signore? Destati, non rigettarci in perpetuo!
24 Wherefore wilt thou hide thy face, wilt thou forget our misery, and our oppression?
Perché nascondi la tua faccia e dimentichi la nostra afflizione e la nostra oppressione?
25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our body cleaveth unto the earth.
Poiché l’anima nostra è abbattuta nella polvere; il nostro corpo aderisce alla terra.
26 Arise unto our help, and redeem us for the sake of thy kindness.
Lèvati in nostro aiuto, e liberaci, per amor della tua benignità.
