< Psalms 22 >

1 “To the chief musician upon Ayeleth-hashachar, a psalm of David.” My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from saving me, and from the words of my loud complaint?
Unto the end. For the tasks of early morning. A Psalm of David. O God, my God, look upon me. Why have you forsaken me? Far from my salvation are the words of my offenses.
2 O my God! I call in the day-time, but thou answerest not; and in the night I find no rest.
My God, I will cry out by day, and you will not heed, and by night, and it will not be foolishness for me.
3 But thou art holy, O thou that dwellest amidst the praises of Israel.
But you dwell in holiness, O Praise of Israel.
4 In thee did our fathers trust: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
In you, our fathers have hoped. They hoped, and you freed them.
5 Unto thee they cried, and were delivered: in thee they trusted, and were not put to shame.
They cried out to you, and they were saved. In you, they hoped and were not confounded.
6 But I am a worm, and not a man, a reproach of men, and despised of people.
But I am a worm and not a man: a disgrace among men, and an outcast of the people.
7 All those who see me laugh me to scorn: they draw open their lips, they shake their head, [saying, ]
All those who saw me have derided me. They have spoken with the lips and shook the head.
8 “Let him throw himself on the Lord, that he may deliver him: he will save him, for he delighteth in him.”
He has hoped in the Lord, let him rescue him. Let him save him because he chooses him.
9 Yea, thou art he that took me from the womb: thou hast been my trust when I hung on my mother's breasts.
For you are the one who has drawn me out of the womb, my hope from the breasts of my mother.
10 Upon thee was I cast from my birth: from my mother's womb art thou my God.
I have been thrown upon you from the womb; from the womb of my mother, you are my God.
11 Oh be not far from me [now]; for distress is near; for there is none to help.
Do not depart from me. For tribulation is near, since there is no one who may help me.
12 Many steers have encompassed me: the strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
Many calves have surrounded me; fat bulls have besieged me.
13 They have opened wide against me their mouth, [as] a ravenous and roaring lion.
They have opened their mouths over me, just like a lion seizing and roaring.
14 Like water am I poured out, and all my bones are disjointed: my heart is become like wax, it is melted in the midst of my entrails.
And so, I have been poured out like water, and all my bones have been scattered. My heart has become like wax, melting in the midst of my chest.
15 Like a potsherd is my strength dried up; and my tongue cleaveth to my palate; and into the dust of death hast thou laid me down.
My strength has dried up like clay, and my tongue has adhered to my jaws. And you have pulled me down, into the dust of death.
16 For dogs have encompassed me; the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me: like lions [they threaten] my hands and my feet.
For many dogs have surrounded me. The council of the malicious has besieged me. They have pierced my hands and feet.
17 I may number all my bones: [while] they stare and look upon me.
They have numbered all my bones. And they have examined me and stared at me.
18 They divide my clothes among themselves, and for my garment do they cast lots.
They divided my garments among them, and over my vestment, they cast lots.
19 But thou, O Lord, be not far from me: O [thou who art] my strength, hasten to my aid.
But you, O Lord, do not take your help far from me; be attentive to my defense.
20 Deliver from the sword my life, from the power of the dog my solitary soul.
O God, rescue my soul from the spear, and my only one from the hand of the dog.
21 Save me from the lion's mouth; as thou hast answered me from the horns of the reem.
Save me from the mouth of the lion, and my humility from the horns of the single-horned beast.
22 I will relate thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
I will declare your name to my brothers. In the midst of the Church, I will praise you.
23 Ye that fear the Lord, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and be in dread of him, all ye the seed of Israel.
You who fear the Lord, praise him. All the offspring of Jacob, glorify him.
24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the poor; neither hath he hidden his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
May all the offspring of Israel fear him. For he has neither spurned nor despised the pleas of the poor. Neither has he turned his face away from me. And when I cried out to him, he heeded me.
25 Of thee shall be my praise in a great assembly: my vows will I pay in the presence of those who fear him.
My praise is with you, within a great church. I will pay my vows in the sight of those who fear him.
26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied; they who seek him shall praise the Lord: may your heart live for ever.
The poor will eat and be satisfied, and those who yearn for the Lord will praise him. Their hearts will live forever and ever.
27 All the ends of the world shall remember and return unto the Lord: and all the families of the nations shall bow themselves down before thee.
All the ends of the earth will remember, and they will be converted to the Lord. And all the families of the Gentiles will adore in his sight.
28 For the kingdom is the Lord's, and he governeth the nations.
For the kingdom belongs to the Lord, and he will have dominion over the Gentiles.
29 All they that eat the fat of the earth shall bow themselves down; before him shall bend the knee all that are going down into the dust; for none can keep alive his own soul.
All the fat of the earth have gnashed their teeth, and they have adored. In his sight, they will fall down, all those who descend to the ground.
30 Distant ages shall serve him; there shall be related of the Lord unto future generations.
And my soul will live for him, and my offspring will serve him.
31 They will come, and will tell his righteousness unto a people yet unborn, that he hath done this.
There will be announced for the Lord a future generation, and the heavens will announce his justice to a people who will be born, whom the Lord has made.
