Proverbs 8
1 Behold, wisdom calleth, and understanding sendeth forth her voice,
Voici la sagesse qui appelle, la raison qui élève la voix.
2 On the top of high places, by the wayside, at the house where there are [many] paths doth she place herself.
Sur la cime des hauteurs qui bordent la route, au croisement des chemins, elle s’est postée.
3 Alongside of gates, at the opening of the city, at the entrance of the town[-doors] doth she call loudly,
Dans le voisinage des portes qui conduisent dans la cité, à l’entrée des avenues, elle fait retentir ses apostrophes:
4 Unto you, O men, I call, and my voice [goeth forth] to the sons of men,
"Mortels, c’est vous que j’appelle; fils de l’homme, c’est à vous que s’adresse ma voix.
5 Learn, O ye simple, to understand prudence: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
Niais, sachez le prix de la réflexion; sots, sachez le prix de l’intelligence.
6 Hear! for of noble things will I speak; and the opening of my lips shall be of what is equitable.
Ecoutez, car j’énonce de nobles vérités, et mes lèvres s’ouvrent pour des leçons de droiture.
7 For truth uttereth my palate ever, and the abomination of my lips is wickedness.
Oui, ma bouche ne profère que vérité, et mes lèvres ont horreur de l’impiété.
8 In righteousness are all the sayings of my mouth, there is in them nothing crooked or perverse.
Elles sont empreintes de droiture, toutes les paroles de ma bouche; en elles, rien d’équivoque ni de louche.
9 They are all evident to the man of understanding, and correct to those that have obtained knowledge.
Toutes sont loyales au gré de l’homme intelligent, et probes pour qui possède le savoir.
10 Accept my correction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
Attachez à ma morale plus de prix qu’à l’argent, à la vraie connaissance plus qu’à l’or de choix.
11 For wisdom is better than pearls; and all the things that men wish for are not equal to her.
C’Est que la sagesse est plus précieuse que les perles: tous les biens réunis ne la valent point.
12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and the knowledge of discreet thoughts do I discover.
Je suis la sagesse, en pleine possession de la réflexion; j’atteins la science des habiles conceptions.
13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride and arrogance, and the evil way: and the mouth of perverseness do I hate.
Craindre l’Eternel, c’est haïr le mal; l’orgueil et l’arrogance, le chemin du malfaiteur, la bouche perverse, voilà ce que je déteste.
14 Mine are counsel and sound wisdom: I am understanding; mine is might.
A moi les conseils, gage de succès; je suis l’intelligence, et la force est mon attribut.
15 Through me do kings reign, and chieftains give decrees [in] righteousness.
Par moi règnent les rois, et les princes fondent des lois de justice.
16 Through me do princes rule, and the nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
Par moi gouvernent les grands et les nobles, tous ceux qui rendent la justice sur terre.
17 I indeed love those that love me: and those that seek me earnestly shall find me.
J’Aime qui m’aime, et qui me cherche me trouve.
18 Riches and honor are with me, yea, enduring wealth and righteousness.
Avec moi sont richesse et honneur, fortune durable et juste récompense.
19 My fruit is better than gold, and than fine gold; and my products, than choice silver.
Mon fruit est meilleur que l’or et les métaux précieux, et mon produit que l’argent de choix.
20 On the road of righteousness do I walk firmly, in the midst the paths of justice:
Je suis avec persévérance la voie de la justice, les sentiers de l’équité,
21 That I may cause those that love me to inherit a lasting possession; and their treasures will I fill
en donnant à ceux qui m’aiment des biens en partage, en remplissant leurs trésors.
22 The Lord created me as the beginning of his way, the first of his works from the commencement,
L’Eternel me créa au début de son action, antérieurement à ses œuvres, dès l’origine des choses.
23 From eternity was I appointed chief, from the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth.
Dès les temps antiques, je fus formée, tout au commencement, bien avant la naissance de la terre.
24 When there were yet no depths, was I brought forth; when there were yet no springs laden heavily with water.
II n’y avait pas encore d’océan quand je naquis, ni de sources chargées d’eaux.
25 Before the mountains were yet sunk down, before the hills was I brought forth:
Avant les montagnes plongeant dans les profondeurs, avant les coteaux, je fus douée de vie,
26 While as yet he had not made the land and open fields, nor the chief of the dust of the world.
avant que Dieu eût fait la terre et ses vastes espaces, la masse des glèbes du sol.
27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle over the face of the deep;
Quand il affermit les cieux, j’étais là, et quand il traça un cercle autour de la surface de l’abîme;
28 When he fastened the skies above; when the springs of the deep became strong;
quand il consolida les nuées dans les régions supérieures, quand jaillirent avec force les sources souterraines;
29 When he assigned to the sea his decree, that the waters should not transgress his order: when he established firmly the foundations of the earth:
quand il imposa à la mer ses limites, empêchant les eaux d’enfreindre son ordre, et qu’il fixa les fondements de la terre.
30 Then was I near him, as a nursling: and I was day by day [his] delights, playing before him at all times;
Alors j’étais à ses côtés, habile ouvrière, dans un enchantement perpétuel, goûtant en sa présence des joies sans fin,
31 Playing in the world, his earth; and having my delights with the sons of men.
m’égayant sur son globe terrestre et faisant mes délices des fils de l’homme.
32 And now, O children [of men], hearken unto me! for happy those that observe my ways.
Et maintenant, mes fils, écoutez-moi: heureux ceux qui suivent fidèlement mes voies!
33 Hear correction, and be wise, and reject it not.
Ecoutez la loi morale pour devenir sages, et ne la traitez pas avec mépris.
34 Happy is the man that hearkeneth unto me, watching day by day at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
Heureux l’homme qui m’obéit, en accourant à mes portes jour par jour et en observant les piliers sur lesquels s’ouvre ma demeure!
35 For he who findeth me findeth life, and he obtaineth favor from the Lord.
Car celui qui m’a trouvée a trouvé la vie et conquis la bienveillance de l’Eternel."
36 But he that sinneth against me doth violence to his own soul: all those that hate me love death.
Mais qui me manque se perd lui-même: me haïr, c’est aimer la mort!
