Proverbs 30
1 The words of Agur the son of Yakeh, even the prophecy: the man said unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ukkal,
Paroles de celui qui assemble, du fils de celui qui répand les vérités. Vision qu’a racontée l’homme avec qui est Dieu, et qui, fortifié par Dieu demeurant avec lui, a dit:
2 “Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a common man.
Je suis le plus insensé des hommes, et la sagesse des hommes n’est pas avec moi.
3 Nor have I learned wisdom, so that I should have knowledge of the Holy One.
Je n’ai pas appris la sagesse; et je ne connais pas la science des saints.
4 Who was it that ascended into heaven, and came down again? who gathered the wind in his fists? who bound the waters in a garment? who set up all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou knowest it?”
Qui est monté au ciel et en est descendu? qui a retenu le vent dans ses mains? qui a lié les eaux comme dans un vêtement? qui a établi toutes les bornes de la terre? quel est son nom et quel est le nom de son fils, si tu le sais?
5 Every saying of God is purified: he is a shield unto those that put their trust in him.
Toute parole de Dieu est de feu; il est un bouclier pour tous ceux qui espèrent en lui;
6 Do not add aught unto his words: lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
N’ajoute rien à ses paroles, pour que tu ne sois pas repris et trouvé menteur.
7 Two things do I request of thee: deny them not to me before I die.
Je vous ai demandé deux choses, ne me les refusez pas avant que je meure.
8 Vanity and lying words do thou remove far from me: neither poverty nor riches give thou unto me; let me eat the bread appointed unto me:
Éloignez de moi la vanité et les paroles mensongères. Ne me donnez ni la mendicité ni les richesses; accordez-moi seulement les choses nécessaires à ma vie;
9 Lest I become over-full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I become poor, and steal, and trespass against the name of my God.
De peur que, rassasié, je ne sois tenté de vous renier, et que je ne dise: Qui est le Seigneur? ou que, poussé par la détresse, je ne dérobe et ne parjure le nom de mon Dieu.
10 Do not calumniate a servant unto his master: lest he curse thee, and thou incur guilt.
N’accuse pas l’esclave auprès de son maître, de peur qu’il ne te maudisse, et que tu ne succombes.
11 There is a generation that curseth its father, and doth not bless its mother.
Il est une race qui maudit son père, et qui ne bénit pas sa mère.
12 There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes, and yet is not washed [clean] of its filthiness.
Il est une race qui se croit pure, et qui cependant n’a pas été lavée de ses souillures.
13 There is a generation—O how lofty are its eyes! and its eyelids are so lifted up.
Il est une race dont les yeux sont altiers, et les paupières relevées.
14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and whose string teeth are as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.
Il est une race qui au lieu de dents a des glaives, et qui mâche avec ses molaires, afin de dévorer ceux qui sont sans ressources sur la terre, et les pauvres d’entre les hommes.
15 Insatiability hath two daughters, [crying, ] Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things which never say, Enough:
À la sangsue sont deux filles qui disent: Apporte, apporte. Il y a trois choses insatiables, et une quatrième qui jamais ne dit: C’est assez.
16 The nether world; and a barren womb; the earth which is not satisfied with water; and the fire which never saith, Enough. (Sheol h7585)
L’enfer, l’impudique, la terre qui ne se rassasie pas d’eau, et le feu qui jamais ne dit: C’est assez. (Sheol h7585)
17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, this shall the ravens of the valley pick out; and the young eagles shall eat it.
L’œil qui insulte son père, et qui méprise l’enfantement de sa mère, que les corbeaux des torrents le percent, et que les fils de l’aigle le dévorent.
18 Three things there are which are too wonderful for me; and four, which I know not:
Trois choses sont difficiles pour moi, et la quatrième, je l’ignore entièrement:
19 The way of the eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the heart of the sea; and the way of a man with a young woman.
La voie de l’aigle dans le ciel, la voie du serpent sur un rocher, la voie du vaisseau au milieu de la mer, et la voie de l’homme dans son adolescence.
20 Such is the way of an adulterous woman: she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wrong.
Et telle est aussi la voie de la femme adultère, qui mange, essuie sa bouche, et dit: Je n’ai pas fait le mal.
21 Under three things the earth trembleth, and under four which she cannot bear:
Par trois choses est troublée la terre, et la quatrième elle ne peut la supporter:
22 Under a servant when he becometh king, and a worthless fool when he hath eaten enough bread;
Par un esclave, lorsqu’il règne; par un insensé, lorsqu’il est rassasié de nourriture;
23 Under an odious woman when she is married, and a bond-woman when she dispossesseth her mistress.
Par une femme odieuse, lorsqu’elle a été prise en mariage; et par une servante, lorsqu’elle est devenue héritière de sa maîtresse.
24 There are four which are the little ones of the earth, and they are nevertheless exceedingly wise:
Quatre choses sont les plus petites de la terre, et ces mêmes choses sont plus sages que les sages:
25 The ants are a people not strong, therefore do they prepare in the summer their food;
Les fourmis, peuple faible qui prépare, dans la moisson, sa nourriture;
26 The conies are but a feeble people, therefore do they place on the rocks their houses;
Le levraut, peuple sans force, qui établit dans un rocher son lit;
27 The locusts have no king, and yet they go forth in troops altogether;
Les sauterelles qui n’ont pas de roi et sortent toutes par bandes;
28 The spider thou canst catch with [thy] hands, and yet she is in the palaces of a king.
Le lézard qui s’appuie sur ses mains, et demeure dans le palais des rois.
29 Three there are that have a stately step, and four, that are stately in going:
il y a trois choses qui marchent bien, et une quatrième qui s’avance avec succès:
30 The lion, the mightiest among beasts, who turneth not round from before any one;
Le lion, le plus fort des animaux, qui n’a peur de la rencontre de personne;
31 The light-legged greyhound, and the he-goat; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.
Le coq qui a les reins ceints; le bélier, et le roi à qui nul ne résiste.
32 If thou hast become degraded by lifting up thyself, or if thou hast devised evil, put thy hand to thy mouth:
Tel a paru insensé après qu’il a été élevé à un rang sublime; car s’il avait eu de l’intelligence, il aurait mis la main sur sa bouche.
33 For the pressure of milk bringeth forth butter, and the pressure of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the pressure of wrath bringeth forth strife.
Celui qui presse fort les mamelles pour en tirer le lait en fait sortir du beurre; et celui qui se mouche trop fort tire du sang: et celui qui provoque les colères produit des discordes.
