Proverbs 24
1 Be thou not envious of bad men, and do not long to be with them.
Non invidiare gli uomini malvagi, non desiderare di stare con loro;
2 For their heart meditateth destruction, and of mischief do their lips speak.
poiché il loro cuore trama rovine e le loro labbra non esprimono che malanni.
3 Through wisdom is a house built; and through understanding is it firmly established;
Con la sapienza si costruisce la casa e con la prudenza la si rende salda;
4 And through knowledge are chambers filled with all manner of precious and pleasant wealth.
con la scienza si riempiono le sue stanze di tutti i beni preziosi e deliziosi.
5 A wise man is [always] in power; and a man of knowledge fortifieth [his] strength.
Un uomo saggio vale più di uno forte, un uomo sapiente più di uno pieno di vigore,
6 For by wise counsel canst thou conduct thy war; and there is help in a multitude of counsellors.
perché con le decisioni prudenti si fa la guerra e la vittoria sta nel numero dei consiglieri.
7 Wisdom is too high for a fool: in the gate can he not open his mouth.
E' troppo alta la sapienza per lo stolto, alla porta della città egli non potrà aprir bocca.
8 Him that deviseth to do evil, men call a master of wicked devices.
Chi trama per fare il male si chiama mestatore.
9 The counsel of folly is sin; and an abomination to men is the scorner.
Il proposito dello stolto è il peccato e lo spavaldo è l'abominio degli uomini.
10 If thou despond on the day of distress, thy strength is small.
Se ti avvilisci nel giorno della sventura, ben poca è la tua forza.
11 Deliver those that are taken unto death, and those that are moved away to the slaughter hold back.
Libera quelli che sono condotti alla morte e salva quelli che sono trascinati al supplizio.
12 If thou shouldst say, Behold, we know not this man: lo, he that weigheth hearts will truly regard it, and he that keepeth thy soul will surely know it; and he will give a recompense to man according to his doing.
Se dici: «Ecco, io non ne so nulla», forse colui che pesa i cuori non lo comprende? Colui che veglia sulla tua vita lo sa; egli renderà a ciascuno secondo le sue opere.
13 Eat honey, my son, because it is good; and the fine honey, which is sweet to thy palate:
Mangia, figlio mio, il miele, perché è buono e dolce sarà il favo al tuo palato.
14 So obtain the knowledge of wisdom for thy soul: when thou hast found her, then shall there be a [happy] future, and thy hope shall not be cut off.
Sappi che tale è la sapienza per te: se l'acquisti, avrai un avvenire e la tua speranza non sarà stroncata.
15 Lie not in wait, O wicked man! against the dwelling of the righteous; waste not his resting-place;
Non insidiare, o malvagio, la dimora del giusto, non distruggere la sua abitazione,
16 For though the righteous were to fall seven times, he will rise up again; but the wicked shall stumble into misfortune.
perché se il giusto cade sette volte, egli si rialza, ma gli empi soccombono nella sventura.
17 At the fall of thy enemy do not rejoice; and at his stumbling let not thy heart be glad:
Non ti rallegrare per la caduta del tuo nemico e non gioisca il tuo cuore, quando egli soccombe,
18 Lest the Lord see it and it be displeasing in his eyes, and he turn away from him his wrath.
perché il Signore non veda e se ne dispiaccia e allontani da lui la collera.
19 Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, neither be thou envious of the wicked;
Non irritarti per i malvagi e non invidiare gli empi,
20 For there will be no [happy] future for the bad man: the lamp of the wicked will be quenched.
perché non ci sarà avvenire per il malvagio e la lucerna degli empi si estinguerà.
21 My son, fear the Lord and the king: with those that are desirous to change do not mingle thyself;
Temi il Signore, figlio mio, e il re; non ribellarti né all'uno né all'altro,
22 For suddenly will their calamity arise; and who knoweth the ruin of both of them!
perché improvvisa sorgerà la loro vendetta e chi sa quale scempio faranno l'uno e l'altro?
23 These things also are for the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.
Anche queste sono parole dei saggi. Aver preferenze personali in giudizio non è bene.
24 Him that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous, will the people denounce, him will nations hold accursed;
Se uno dice all'empio: «Tu sei innocente», i popoli lo malediranno, le genti lo esecreranno,
25 But to those that punish delight shall be given, and upon them shall come the blessing of the good.
mentre tutto andrà bene a coloro che rendono giustizia, su di loro si riverserà la benedizione.
26 Men will kiss the lips of him that giveth a proper answer.
Dà un bacio sulle labbra colui che risponde con parole rette.
27 Prepare without thy work, and make it fit in the field for thyself: and afterward build thy house.
Sistema i tuoi affari di fuori e fatti i lavori dei campi e poi costruisciti la casa.
28 Be not without cause a witness against thy neighbor; for wouldst thou beguile with thy lips?
Non testimoniare alla leggera contro il tuo prossimo e non ingannare con le labbra.
29 Say not, As he hath done to me so will I do to him: I will recompense every man according to his doing.
Non dire: «Come ha fatto a me così io farò a lui, renderò a ciascuno come si merita».
30 By the field of a slothful man I once passed along, and by the vineyard of a man void of sense:
Sono passato vicino al campo di un pigro, alla vigna di un uomo insensato:
31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, nettles had covered its surface, and its stone-wall was broken down.
ecco, ovunque erano cresciute le erbacce, il terreno era coperto di cardi e il recinto di pietre era in rovina.
32 And when I had indeed beheld [this] I took it to my heart: I saw it, and received a warning.
Osservando, riflettevo e, vedendo, ho tratto questa lezione:
33 “A little [more] sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands in lying down;”
un pò dormire, un pò sonnecchiare, un pò incrociare le braccia per riposare
34 But then will thy poverty come like a rover; and thy wants as a man armed with a shield.
e intanto viene passeggiando la miseria e l'indigenza come un accattone.
