Proverbs 24
1 Be thou not envious of bad men, and do not long to be with them.
Ne soyez pas envieux des hommes mauvais, ni le désir d'être avec eux;
2 For their heart meditateth destruction, and of mischief do their lips speak.
pour la violence du complot de leurs cœurs et leurs lèvres parlent de méchanceté.
3 Through wisdom is a house built; and through understanding is it firmly established;
C'est par la sagesse que l'on construit une maison; par l'entendement, il est établi;
4 And through knowledge are chambers filled with all manner of precious and pleasant wealth.
par connaissance les chambres sont remplies avec tous les trésors rares et magnifiques.
5 A wise man is [always] in power; and a man of knowledge fortifieth [his] strength.
Un homme sage a un grand pouvoir. Un homme bien informé accroît sa force,
6 For by wise counsel canst thou conduct thy war; and there is help in a multitude of counsellors.
car c'est par des conseils avisés que tu fais la guerre, et la victoire est dans de nombreux conseillers.
7 Wisdom is too high for a fool: in the gate can he not open his mouth.
La sagesse est trop élevée pour un fou. Il n'ouvre pas sa bouche dans la porte.
8 Him that deviseth to do evil, men call a master of wicked devices.
Celui qui complote pour faire le mal sera appelé un magouilleur.
9 The counsel of folly is sin; and an abomination to men is the scorner.
Les projets de la folie sont des péchés. Le moqueur est détesté par les hommes.
10 If thou despond on the day of distress, thy strength is small.
Si vous chancelez au moment de la détresse, votre force est faible.
11 Deliver those that are taken unto death, and those that are moved away to the slaughter hold back.
Sauvez ceux qui sont conduits à la mort! En effet, retenez ceux qui titubent vers le massacre!
12 If thou shouldst say, Behold, we know not this man: lo, he that weigheth hearts will truly regard it, and he that keepeth thy soul will surely know it; and he will give a recompense to man according to his doing.
Si vous dites: « Voici, nous ne savions pas cela, » Celui qui pèse les cœurs ne le considère-t-il pas? Celui qui garde ton âme, ne le sait-il pas? Ne doit-il pas rendre à chacun selon son travail?
13 Eat honey, my son, because it is good; and the fine honey, which is sweet to thy palate:
Mon fils, mange du miel, car il est bon, les excréments du rayon de miel, qui sont doux à votre goût;
14 So obtain the knowledge of wisdom for thy soul: when thou hast found her, then shall there be a [happy] future, and thy hope shall not be cut off.
Ainsi tu connaîtras la sagesse pour ton âme. Si vous l'avez trouvé, il y aura une récompense: Votre espoir ne sera pas coupé.
15 Lie not in wait, O wicked man! against the dwelling of the righteous; waste not his resting-place;
Ne fais pas d'embuscades, méchant, contre la demeure des justes. Ne détruisez pas son lieu de repos;
16 For though the righteous were to fall seven times, he will rise up again; but the wicked shall stumble into misfortune.
car le juste tombe sept fois et se relève, mais les méchants sont renversés par la calamité.
17 At the fall of thy enemy do not rejoice; and at his stumbling let not thy heart be glad:
Ne te réjouis pas quand ton ennemi tombe. Ne laissez pas votre cœur se réjouir quand il sera renversé,
18 Lest the Lord see it and it be displeasing in his eyes, and he turn away from him his wrath.
de peur que Yahvé ne le voie et que cela ne lui déplaise, et il détourne de lui sa colère.
19 Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, neither be thou envious of the wicked;
Ne vous inquiétez pas à cause des méchants, ne soyez pas envieux des méchants;
20 For there will be no [happy] future for the bad man: the lamp of the wicked will be quenched.
car il n'y aura pas de récompense pour l'homme mauvais. La lampe des méchants sera éteinte.
21 My son, fear the Lord and the king: with those that are desirous to change do not mingle thyself;
Mon fils, crains Yahvé et le roi. Ne vous joignez pas à ceux qui sont rebelles,
22 For suddenly will their calamity arise; and who knoweth the ruin of both of them!
car leur calamité se lève soudainement. Qui sait quelle destruction peut venir de ces deux-là?
23 These things also are for the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.
Ce sont là des paroles de sages: Faire preuve de partialité dans le jugement n'est pas bon.
24 Him that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous, will the people denounce, him will nations hold accursed;
Celui qui dit au méchant: « Tu es juste, » les peuples le maudiront, et les nations l'abhorreront -
25 But to those that punish delight shall be given, and upon them shall come the blessing of the good.
mais il ira bien avec ceux qui condamnent les coupables, et une riche bénédiction viendra sur eux.
26 Men will kiss the lips of him that giveth a proper answer.
Une réponse honnête est comme un baiser sur les lèvres.
27 Prepare without thy work, and make it fit in the field for thyself: and afterward build thy house.
Préparez votre travail à l'extérieur, et préparez vos champs. Ensuite, construisez votre maison.
28 Be not without cause a witness against thy neighbor; for wouldst thou beguile with thy lips?
Ne sois pas un témoin contre ton prochain sans raison. Ne trompez pas avec vos lèvres.
29 Say not, As he hath done to me so will I do to him: I will recompense every man according to his doing.
Ne dites pas: « Je lui ferai ce qu'il m'a fait »; Je rendrai à l'homme ce qu'il a fait. »
30 By the field of a slothful man I once passed along, and by the vineyard of a man void of sense:
Je suis passé par le champ du paresseux, par la vigne de l'homme dépourvu d'intelligence.
31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, nettles had covered its surface, and its stone-wall was broken down.
Voici, elle était couverte d'épines. Sa surface était couverte d'orties, et son mur de pierre a été démoli.
32 And when I had indeed beheld [this] I took it to my heart: I saw it, and received a warning.
Alors j'ai vu, et j'ai bien réfléchi. J'ai vu, et reçu des instructions:
33 “A little [more] sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands in lying down;”
un peu de sommeil, un peu d'assoupissement, un petit pliage des mains pour dormir,
34 But then will thy poverty come like a rover; and thy wants as a man armed with a shield.
alors ta pauvreté viendra comme un voleur et votre volonté en tant qu'homme armé.
