Proverbs 24
1 Be thou not envious of bad men, and do not long to be with them.
Älä ole kiivas pahain ihmisten kanssa, ja älä himoitse olla heitä läsnä;
2 For their heart meditateth destruction, and of mischief do their lips speak.
Sillä heidän sydämensä pyytää vahingoittaa, ja heidän huulensa neuvovat pahuuteen.
3 Through wisdom is a house built; and through understanding is it firmly established;
Viisaudella raknnetaan huone, ja toimella se vahvistetaan.
4 And through knowledge are chambers filled with all manner of precious and pleasant wealth.
Taidolla kammio täytetään kaikkinaisista kalliista ja jaloista tavaroista.
5 A wise man is [always] in power; and a man of knowledge fortifieth [his] strength.
Viisas mies on väkevä, ja toimellinen mies on voimallinen väestä.
6 For by wise counsel canst thou conduct thy war; and there is help in a multitude of counsellors.
Sillä neuvolla sodatkin pidetään: ja jossa monta neuvonantajaa on, siinä on voitto.
7 Wisdom is too high for a fool: in the gate can he not open his mouth.
Viisaus on hullulle ylen korkia, ei hän tohdi avata suutansa portissa.
8 Him that deviseth to do evil, men call a master of wicked devices.
Joka ajattelee pahaa tehdäksensä, se kutsutaan pahain ajatusten päämieheksi.
9 The counsel of folly is sin; and an abomination to men is the scorner.
Tyhmäin ajatus on synti, ja pilkkaaja on kauhistus ihmisille.
10 If thou despond on the day of distress, thy strength is small.
Ei se ole väkevä, joka ei tuskassa vahva ole.
11 Deliver those that are taken unto death, and those that are moved away to the slaughter hold back.
Auta niitä, joita tappaa tahdotaan, ja älä vedä sinuas pois pois niiden tyköä, jotka kuoletetaan.
12 If thou shouldst say, Behold, we know not this man: lo, he that weigheth hearts will truly regard it, and he that keepeth thy soul will surely know it; and he will give a recompense to man according to his doing.
Jos sinä sanot: katso, emme ymmärrä sitä! luuletkos, ettei se, joka sydämet tutkii, sitä ymmärrä? ja se, joka sielustas ottaa vaarin, tunne sitä ja kosta ihmiselle tekonsa jälkeen?
13 Eat honey, my son, because it is good; and the fine honey, which is sweet to thy palate:
Syö, poikani, hunajaa; sillä se on hyvä, ja mesileupä on makia suus laelle.
14 So obtain the knowledge of wisdom for thy soul: when thou hast found her, then shall there be a [happy] future, and thy hope shall not be cut off.
Niin on myös viisauden oppi sielulles: koskas sen löydät, niin sinun viimein käy hyvin, ja ei sinun toivos ole turha.
15 Lie not in wait, O wicked man! against the dwelling of the righteous; waste not his resting-place;
Älä vartioitse vanhurskaan huonetta, sinä jumalatoin, älä hukkaa hänen lepoansa.
16 For though the righteous were to fall seven times, he will rise up again; but the wicked shall stumble into misfortune.
Sillä vanhurskas taitaa langeta seitsemän kertaa, ja nousee jälleen; mutta jumalattomat kaatuvat onnettomuuteen.
17 At the fall of thy enemy do not rejoice; and at his stumbling let not thy heart be glad:
Älä iloitse vihamiehes vahingosta, ja älköön sinun sydämes riemuitko hänen onnettomuudestansa,
18 Lest the Lord see it and it be displeasing in his eyes, and he turn away from him his wrath.
Ettei Herra näkisi sitä, ja se olis hänelle kelvotoin, ja hän kääntäis vihansa pois hänen päältänsä.
19 Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, neither be thou envious of the wicked;
Älä vihastu pahain päälle, älä myös ole kiivas jumalattomain tähden;
20 For there will be no [happy] future for the bad man: the lamp of the wicked will be quenched.
Sillä ei häijyllä ole mitään toivomista, ja jumalattomain kynttilä pitää sammuman.
21 My son, fear the Lord and the king: with those that are desirous to change do not mingle thyself;
Poikani, pelkää Herraa ja kuningasta, ja älä sekoita sinuas kapinan nostajain kanssa.
22 For suddenly will their calamity arise; and who knoweth the ruin of both of them!
Sillä heidän kadotuksensa nousee äkisti: ja kuka tietää, koska kummankin onnetomuus tulee?
23 These things also are for the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.
Nämä ovat myös viisasten: ei ole hyvä katsoa muotoa tuomiossa.
24 Him that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous, will the people denounce, him will nations hold accursed;
Joka jumalattomalle sanoo: sinä olet hurskas! häntä kiroovat ihmiset, ja kansa vihaa häntä.
25 But to those that punish delight shall be given, and upon them shall come the blessing of the good.
Mutta jotka rankaisevat, he ovat otolliset, ja runsas siunaus tulee heidän päällensä.
26 Men will kiss the lips of him that giveth a proper answer.
Toimellinen vastaus on niinkuin suloinen suun antamus.
27 Prepare without thy work, and make it fit in the field for thyself: and afterward build thy house.
Toimita työs ulkona, ja valmista peltos, ja rakenna sitte huonees.
28 Be not without cause a witness against thy neighbor; for wouldst thou beguile with thy lips?
Älä todista lähimmäistäs vastaan ilman syytä, ja älä petä suullas.
29 Say not, As he hath done to me so will I do to him: I will recompense every man according to his doing.
Älä sano: niinkuin hän teki minulle, niin minä teen hänelle: minä kostan jokaiselle hänen tekonsa jälkeen.
30 By the field of a slothful man I once passed along, and by the vineyard of a man void of sense:
Minä kävin laiskan pellon ohitse, ja tyhmän viinamäen sivuitse,
31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, nettles had covered its surface, and its stone-wall was broken down.
Ja katso, siinä olivat paljaat ohdakkeet kasvaneet, ja se oli nukulaista täynnä, ja aidat olivat kaatuneet.
32 And when I had indeed beheld [this] I took it to my heart: I saw it, and received a warning.
Kuin minä sen bäin, panin minä sen sydämeeni, katselin ja opin siitä.
33 “A little [more] sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands in lying down;”
Sinä tahdot vielä vähä maata ja unelias olla, ja enempi käsiäs yhteen panna lepäämään;
34 But then will thy poverty come like a rover; and thy wants as a man armed with a shield.
Mutta köyhyytes pitää sinulle tuleman niinkuin matkamies, ja vaivaisuus niinkuin varustettu mies.
