Proverbs 23
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:
Când te așezi să mănânci cu un conducător, cu atenție ia aminte la ce este înaintea ta;
2 For thou puttest a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man of a craving desire.
Și pune un cuțit la gâtul tău, dacă ești un om dedat apetitului.
3 Do not long for his savory meats; they are deceitful food.
Nu dori delicatesele lui, fiindcă ele sunt mâncare înșelătoare.
4 Fatigue thyself not to become rich; because thou hast understanding, forbear.
Nu munci ca să fii bogat; oprește-te de la propria ta înțelepciune.
5 When thou lettest merely thy eyes fly over it, it is no more: for it will ever make itself wings: like an eagle will it fly toward heaven.
Îți vei aținti ochii asupra a ceva ce nu este? Fiindcă bogățiile cu siguranță își fac aripi; ele zboară departe ca o acvilă spre cer.
6 Eat not the bread of a man with an evil eye, and do not long for his savory meats;
Nu mânca pâinea aceluia ce are un ochi rău, nici nu dori delicatesele lui,
7 For as though there were a division in his soul, so doth he act: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
Fiindcă așa cum gândește în inima lui, așa este el; Mănâncă și bea, îți spune el; dar inima lui nu este cu tine.
8 Thy morsel which thou hast eaten must thou spit out, and thou hast wasted thy pleasant words.
Bucata pe care ai mâncat-o, o vei vărsa și îți vei pierde cuvintele dulci.
9 Speak not before the ears of a fool; for he will despise the intelligence of thy words.
Nu vorbi în urechile unui prost, fiindcă va disprețui înțelepciunea cuvintelor tale.
10 Remove not the ancient landmark, and into the fields of the fatherless must thou not enter;
Nu scoate pietrele vechi de hotar și nu intra în câmpurile celor fără tată,
11 For their redeemer is strong; he will indeed plead their cause with thee.
Fiindcă răscumpărătorul lor este puternic; va pleda împotriva ta în cauza lor.
12 Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thy ears to the sayings of knowledge.
Dedică-ți inima instruirii și urechile tale cuvintelor cunoașterii.
13 Withhold not from a lad correction; for if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.
Nu cruța copilul de la disciplinare, fiindcă dacă îl bați cu nuiaua, nu va muri.
14 Thou wilt indeed beat him with the rod; but thou wilt deliver his soul from perdition. (Sheol h7585)
Bate-l cu nuiaua și îi vei elibera sufletul din iad. (Sheol h7585)
15 My son, If thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
Fiul meu, dacă inima ta este înțeleaptă, inima mea se va bucura, chiar a mea.
16 And my reins shall exult when thy lips speak what is equitable.
Da, rărunchii mei se vor bucura când buzele tale spun lucruri drepte.
17 Let not thy heart be envious against sinners; but [remain] in the fear of the lord all the time.
Să nu invidieze inima ta pe păcătoși, ci rămâi în teama de DOMNUL cât este ziua de lungă.
18 For surely there is a future, and thy hope will not be cut off.
Căci cu siguranță este un viitor și așteptarea ta nu va fi stârpită.
19 Hear thou, my son, and become wise, and guide thy heart on the right way.
Ascultă fiul meu și fii înțelept și călăuzește-ți inima pe cale.
20 Be not among those that drink wine immoderately, among those that over-indulge in eating flesh:
Nu fi printre băutorii de vin, printre destrăbălații mâncători de carne;
21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty; and drowsiness clotheth a man in rags.
Fiindcă bețivul și mâncăciosul vor ajunge la sărăcie; și somnolența va îmbrăca pe un om în zdrențe.
22 Hearken unto thy father that hath begotten thee, and despise not thy mother although she be old.
Dă ascultare tatălui tău care te-a născut și nu disprețui pe mama ta când este bătrână.
23 Buy the truth and sell it not; [also] wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
Cumpără adevărul și nu îl vinde; de asemenea înțelepciunea și instruirea și înțelegerea.
24 The father of the righteous will be greatly glad, and he that begetteth a wise child will have joy through him.
Tatăl celui drept se va bucura mult, și cel ce naște un copil înțelept va avea bucurie de la el.
25 Let [then] thy father and thy mother rejoice, and let her that hath born thee be glad.
Tatăl tău și mama ta vor fi veseli, și cea care te-a născut se va bucura.
26 Give, my son, thy heart unto me, and let thy eyes watch my ways.
Fiul meu, dă-mi inima ta și lasă-ți ochii să observe căile mele.
27 For a harlot is a deep ditch, and a strange woman is a narrow well.
Fiindcă o curvă este un șanț adânc, și o femeie străină este o groapă strâmtă.
28 She also lieth in wait like a robber, and she increaseth the treacherous among men.
De asemenea ea pândește ca după pradă și înmulțește pe călcătorii de lege între oameni.
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath quarrels? who hath complaints? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
Cine are vaiet? Cine are întristări? Cine are certuri? Cine are bolboroseli? Cine are răni fără motiv? Cine are roșeața ochilor?
30 They that tarry late over the wine: they that come to seek for mixed drink.
Cei ce adastă îndelung la vin, cei ce se duc să caute vinul amestecat.
31 Do not look on the wine when it looketh red, when it giveth its color in the cup, when it glideth down so readily.
Nu te uita la vin când este roșu, când își arată culoarea în pahar, când se mișcă singur.
32 At the last it will bite like a serpent, and like a basilisk will it sting.
La urmă mușcă precum un șarpe și înțeapă ca o viperă.
33 Thy eyes will see strange forms, and thy heart will speak perverse things.
Ochii tăi vor privi femei străine și inima ta va rosti lucruri perverse.
34 And thou wilt be like one that lieth down in the heart of the sea, or as he that lieth on the top of a mast.
Da, vei fi ca acela ce se întinde în mijlocul mării, sau ca acela ce se întinde în vârful unui catarg.
35 “They smote me, [but] I suffered no pain; they struck me hard, [but] I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will continue to seek it again.”
M-au lovit, vei spune tu, și nu am fost rănit; m-au bătut și nu am simțit; când mă voi trezi? Îl voi căuta din nou.
