Proverbs 18

1 He that separateth himself [from God] seeketh his own desires: at every sound wisdom is he enraged.

जिसने स्वयं को समाज से अलग कर लिया है, वह अपनी ही अभिलाषाओं की पूर्ति में संलिप्‍त रहता है, वह हर प्रकार की प्रामाणिक बुद्धिमत्ता को त्याग चुका है.

2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but in laying open what is in his heart.

विवेकशीलता में मूर्ख की कोई रुचि नहीं होती. उसे तो मात्र अपने ही विचार व्यक्त करने की धुन रहती है.

3 When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with dishonorable acts, disgrace.

जैसे ही दृष्टि का प्रवेश होता है, घृणा भी साथ साथ चली आती है, वैसे ही अपमान के साथ साथ निर्लज्जता भी.

4 Like deep waters are the words of a [wise] man's mouth, and a bubbling brook is the well-spring of wisdom.

मनुष्य के मुख से बोले शब्द गहन जल समान होते हैं, और ज्ञान का सोता नित प्रवाहित उमड़ती नदी समान.

5 It is not good to favor the person of the wicked, to wrest [the cause of the] righteous in judgment.

दुष्ट का पक्ष लेना उपयुक्त नहीं और न धर्मी को न्याय से वंचित रखना.

6 The lips of the fool come with contention, and his mouth calleth for blows.

मूर्खों का वार्तालाप कलह का प्रवेश है, उनके मुंह की बातें उनकी पिटाई की न्योता देती हैं.

7 The mouth of the fool is a destruction to himself, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

मूर्खों के मुख ही उनके विनाश का हेतु होता हैं, उनके ओंठ उनके प्राणों के लिए फंदा सिद्ध होते हैं.

8 The words of a whisperer are as wounds, and they go down indeed into the innermost parts of the body.

फुसफुसाहट में उच्चारे गए शब्द स्वादिष्ट भोजन-समान होते हैं; ये शब्द मनुष्य के पेट में समा जाते हैं.

9 He also that showeth himself slothful in his work is a brother to the destroyer.

जो कोई अपने निर्धारित कार्य के प्रति आलसी है वह विध्वंसक व्यक्ति का भाई होता है.

10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower, whereunto the righteous runneth, and is placed in safety.

याहवेह का नाम एक सुदृढ़ मीनार समान है; धर्मी दौड़कर इसमें छिप जाता और सुरक्षित बना रहता है.

11 The rich man's wealth is his strong town, and as a towering wall in his own conceit.

धनी व्यक्ति के लिए उसका धन एक गढ़ के समान होता है; उनको लगता हैं कि उस पर चढ़ना मुश्किल है!

12 Before downfall the heart of man becometh haughty, and before honor goeth humility.

इसके पूर्व कि किसी मनुष्य पर विनाश का प्रहार हो, उसका हृदय घमंडी हो जाता है, पर आदर मिलने के पहले मनुष्य नम्र होता है!

13 When one returneth an answer before he understandeth [the question], it is folly unto him and shame.

यदि कोई ठीक से सुने बिना ही उत्तर देने लगे, तो यह मूर्खता और लज्जा की स्थिति होती है.

14 The spirit of a man will readily bear his disease; but a depressed spirit who can bear:

रुग्ण अवस्था में मनुष्य का मनोबल उसे संभाले रहता है, किंतु टूटे हृदय को कौन सह सकता है?

15 The heart of the man of understanding will obtain knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

बुद्धिमान मस्तिष्क वह है, जो ज्ञान प्राप्‍त करता रहता है. बुद्धिमान का कान ज्ञान की खोज करता रहता है.

16 A man's gift maketh room for him, and before great men will it lead him.

उपहार उसके देनेवाले के लिए मार्ग खोलता है, जिससे उसका महान व्यक्तियों के पास प्रवेश संभव हो जाता है.

17 He that is first in his cause seemeth just; but when his neighbor cometh, then will it be investigated.

यह संभव है कि न्यायालय में, जो व्यक्ति पहले होकर अपना पक्ष प्रस्तुत करता है, सच्चा ज्ञात हो; जब तक अन्य पक्ष आकर परीक्षण न करे.

18 The lot causeth disputes to cease, and it decideth between the mighty.

पासा फेंककर विवाद हल करना संभव है, इससे प्रबल विरोधियों के मध्य सर्वमान्य निर्णय लिया जा सकता है.

19 A brother offended is harder [to be won] than a strong town; and quarrels [among brothers] are like the bars of a castle.

एक रुष्ट भाई को मनाना सुदृढ़-सुरक्षित नगर को ले लेने से अधिक कठिन कार्य है; और विवाद राजमहल के बंद फाटक समान होते हैं.

20 From the fruit of a man's mouth is his body satisfied; with the product of his lips doth he satisfy himself.

मनुष्य की बातों का परिणाम होता है उसके पेट का भरना; उसके होंठों के उत्पाद में उसका संतोष होता है.

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it will eat its fruit.

जिह्वा की सामर्थ्य जीवन और मृत्यु तक व्याप्‍त है, और जिन्हें यह बात ज्ञात है, उन्हें इसका प्रतिफल प्राप्‍त होगा.

22 Whoso hath found a wife hath found happiness, and hath obtained favor from the Lord.

जिस किसी को पत्नी प्राप्‍त हो गई है, उसने भलाई प्राप्‍त की है, उसे याहवेह की ओर से ही यह आनंद प्राप्‍त हुआ है.

23 The poor speaketh entreatingly; but the rich answereth roughly.

संसार में निर्धन व्यक्ति गिड़गिड़ाता रहता है, और धनी उसे कठोरतापूर्व उत्तर देता है.

24 A man's many companions are hurtful to him; but there is many a friend that cleaveth closer than a brother.

मनुष्य के मित्र मैत्री का लाभ उठाते रहते हैं, किंतु सच्चा मित्र वह होता है, जो भाई से भी अधिक उत्तम होता है.
