Proverbs 12
1 Whoso loveth correction loveth knowledge; but he that hateth reproof is brutish.
Orang yang mau ditegur berarti mau belajar, tetapi orang bebal membenci teguran.
2 The good obtaineth favor of the Lord; but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.
TUHAN berkenan kepada orang yang baik, tetapi menghukum orang yang merencanakan kejahatan.
3 A man cannot be firmly established by wickedness; but the root of the righteous will not be moved.
Orang yang hidup dengan berbuat jahat akan jatuh. Orang yang hidupnya benar tidak akan goyah.
4 A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but as rottenness in his bones is one that bringeth shame [on him].
Istri yang baik bagaikan mahkota kehormatan bagi suaminya, tetapi istri yang bertingkah buruk bagaikan penyakit yang menggerogoti tulang suaminya.
5 The thoughts of the righteous are justice: the best counsels of the wicked are deceit.
Orang benar membuat rencana yang adil. Nasihat orang jahat penuh dengan tipuan.
6 The words of the wicked are of lying in wait for blood; but the mouth of the upright will deliver them.
Nasihat orang jahat berbahaya karena menyembunyikan ancaman yang dapat mematikan, tetapi nasihat orang jujur menyelamatkan.
7 The wicked are suddenly overthrown, and are no more; but the house of the righteous will endure.
Orang jahat akan dihancurkan sampai lenyap, tetapi keturunan orang benar akan tetap hidup.
8 In accordance with his intelligence is a man praised; but he that is perverse of heart will come to be despised.
Orang akan dipuji bila dia berpikiran jernih. Orang yang berpikiran serong akan dihina.
9 Better is he that is lightly esteemed who hath a servant, than he that aimeth after honor, and lacketh bread.
Lebih baik menjadi orang biasa tetapi punya pelayan, daripada berlagak kaya padahal kekurangan makanan.
10 A righteous man careth for the life of his beast; but the mercies of the wicked are cruelty.
Orang benar merawat hewan peliharaannya, tetapi berbuat baik kepada hewan tak pernah ada dalam benak orang jahat.
11 He that tilleth his ground will be satisfied with bread; but he that runneth after idle persons is void of sense.
Orang yang rajin mengerjakan ladangnya akan puas dengan hasilnya, tetapi orang yang melamun saja tidaklah berakal.
12 The wicked is covetous for the net of evil men; but [God] giveth root to the righteous.
Orang yang hidup benar tidak perlu kuatir, karena dia bagaikan pohon subur yang berbuah lebat. Orang jahat selalu cemas. Dia kuatir hasil kekerasannya direbut oleh sesama penjahat.
13 In the transgression of his lips is the snare of the wicked; but the righteous cometh out of distress.
Orang jahat mencelakai diri sendiri dengan perkataannya yang berdosa, tetapi orang benar luput dari kesusahan.
14 From the fruit of his mouth will a man be satisfied with what is good; and the recompense of a man's hands will be brought back unto him.
Perkataan yang bijak menguntungkan bagi yang mengucapkannya. Demikian juga perbuatan yang baik bagi yang melakukannya.
15 The way of a fool is straight in his own eyes; but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.
Orang bebal menganggap cara hidupnya sudah benar, tetapi orang bijak selalu mau menerima nasihat.
16 The wrath of the fool is known on the very day; but he that concealeth the disgrace is prudent.
Orang bijak tetap tenang ketika dihina, tetapi orang bebal cepat marah.
17 He that uttereth truth announceth righteousness; but a false witness, deceit.
Orang jujur memberikan kesaksian yang benar. Saksi dusta mengucapkan kebohongan.
18 There is some one that useth words [which are] like the thrusts of a sword; but the tongue of the wise is healing.
Perkataan yang kasar melukai hati. Perkataan orang bijak menyembuhkan.
19 The lip of truth will stand firm for ever; but only for a moment the tongue of falsehood.
Perkataan yang benar akan terbukti benar sampai kapan pun, tetapi kebohongan pasti terungkap cepat atau lambat.
20 Deceit is in the heart of those that contrive evil; but for the counsellors of peace there is joy.
Penipuan selalu memenuhi hati orang yang merencanakan kejahatan, tetapi sukacita memenuhi hati orang yang mengusahakan damai.
21 No wrong can come unawares to the righteous; but the wicked are full of evil.
Orang benar akan terhindar dari persoalan, tetapi orang jahat akan dirundung masalah.
22 An abomination of the Lord are lips of falsehood; but they that deal in faithfulness [obtain] his favor.
TUHAN berkenan kepada orang yang selalu menepati janji, tetapi Dia membenci pembohong.
23 A prudent man concealeth [his] knowledge; but the heart of fools proclaimeth [their] folly.
Orang bijak tidak memamerkan pengetahuannya, tetapi ucapan orang bebal justru menunjukkan kebodohannya.
24 The hand of the diligent will bear rule; but the indolent must become tributary.
Orang yang rajin akan menjadi pemimpin. Orang malas akan menjadi budak.
25 If there be care in the heart of man, let him suppress it; and a good word will change it into joy.
Pikiran yang cemas membebani hati. Perkataan yang baik menggembirakan.
26 The righteous is more excellent than his neighbor; but the way of the wicked leadeth them astray.
Orang benar memberi pengaruh baik kepada temannya, tetapi orang jahat menyesatkan.
27 The indolent roasteth not that which he hath caught in hunting; but the most precious wealth of man is diligence.
Si pemalas pergi berburu, namun dia terlalu malas untuk mengolah hasilnya, sedangkan orang rajin menghasilkan keuntungan dengan apa pun yang didapatnya.
28 On the path of righteousness there is life; and on her pathway there is immortality,
Jalan yang benar menuju kehidupan. Orang yang menempuhnya tak akan binasa.
