Proverbs 10
1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son causeth [his] father to rejoice; but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.
Inilah kumpulan kata-kata mutiara dari Salomo: Anak lelaki yang bijak membuat ayahnya bahagia, tetapi anak lelaki yang bebal membuat ibunya berduka.
2 Treasures of wickedness will not profit aught; but righteousness will deliver from death.
Harta yang didapat dengan curang tidak akan berguna, tetapi berbuat benar akan menjaga nyawamu.
3 The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish; but the sinful desires of the wicked will he cast away.
TUHAN tak akan membiarkan orang benar kelaparan, tetapi Dia menjauhkan apa yang diinginkan orang jahat.
4 He becometh poor that laboreth with an indolent hand, but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
Orang yang malas membuat hidupnya miskin, tetapi orang yang rajin akan menjadi kaya.
5 He that gathereth in summer is an intelligent son; [but] he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
Orang yang giat bekerja pada masa panen adalah bijaksana, tetapi yang bermalas-malasan mempermalukan dirinya sendiri.
6 Blessings come upon the head of the righteous; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence.
Kehidupan orang benar penuh dengan perkenanan TUHAN. Kehidupan orang jahat penuh dengan kekejaman, bahkan di balik setiap ucapannya.
7 The memory of the just is [destined] to be blessed; but the name of the wicked shall rot.
Orang benar meninggalkan nama harum. Orang jahat meninggalkan nama busuk.
8 The wise in heart will accept commandments; but he that is a fool in his speaking will stumble.
Orang yang bijak mau menerima pengajaran, tetapi orang yang bebal banyak bicara dan menghancurkan dirinya sendiri.
9 He that walketh uprightly ever walketh securely; but he that perverteth his ways will be punished.
Orang jujur jalan hidupnya lurus dan aman, tetapi penipu berbelok-belok dan akhirnya ketahuan.
10 He that winketh with the eye causeth vexation; and he that is a fool in his speaking will stumble.
Jangan percaya pada orang yang mengedipkan mata dengan rekannya, karena mereka sudah bersepakat menipumu. Orang yang bebal banyak bicara dan menghancurkan dirinya sendiri.
11 A source of life is the mouth of the righteous; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence.
Nasihat orang benar seperti mata air yang memberikan kehidupan, tetapi kekejaman memenuhi kehidupan orang jahat, bahkan di balik setiap ucapannya.
12 Hatred stirreth up strifes; but love throweth a cover over all transgressions.
Membenci orang lain akan mengakibatkan pertengkaran, tetapi kasih memaafkan segala kesalahan.
13 On the lips of the man of understanding there is found wisdom: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of sense.
Orang yang memiliki pengertian mengucapkan kata-kata bijaksana, tetapi orang yang tak berpengertian suatu saat pasti mendapat hajaran.
14 Wise men treasure up knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish is an approaching terror.
Orang bijak banyak belajar dan semakin pandai, tetapi orang bebal lebih banyak bicara dan semakin mendekatkan diri pada kehancuran.
15 The wealth of the rich man is his strong town: the terror of the poor is their poverty.
Pelindung bagi orang kaya adalah hartanya, tetapi orang miskin celaka karena kemiskinannya.
16 The labor of the righteous [tendeth] to life: the product of the wicked is for sin.
Upah yang dihasilkan orang benar membuat hidupnya bahagia, tetapi apa yang dihasilkan orang berdosa membuatnya semakin terjerumus dalam dosa.
17 On the way unto life is he that observeth correction; but he that forsaketh reproof is in error.
Orang yang menerima didikan berada di jalan kehidupan, tetapi orang yang tidak mau ditegur akan tersesat.
18 He that hideth hatred hath lips of falsehood; and he that spreadeth abroad an evil report, is a fool.
Orang yang bersikap manis tetapi membenci dalam hati adalah penipu, dan siapa yang suka memfitnah adalah bebal.
19 In a multitude of words transgression cannot be avoided; but he that refraineth his lips is intelligent.
Orang yang banyak bicara mudah jatuh ke dalam dosa, tetapi orang bijak mengerti kapan perlu bicara.
20 [Like] choice silver is the tongue of the righteous: the heart of the wicked is worth but very little.
Perkataan orang benar bagaikan perak murni, tetapi isi hati orang bebal murahan semuanya.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die through lack of sense.
Perkataan orang benar seperti makanan yang menyehatkan jiwa orang banyak, tetapi orang bebal mati karena tidak punya pengertian.
22 The blessing of the Lord it is which maketh rich, and painful labor addeth nothing thereto.
Kekayaanmu bukan ditentukan oleh seberapa besar kerja kerasmu, melainkan oleh berkat TUHAN.
23 It is as sport to a fool to do wicked deeds; but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
Orang bebal senang berbuat jahat, tetapi orang yang berpengertian senang bertindak dengan bijaksana.
24 What the wicked dreadeth, that will come upon him: but the longing of the righteous will God grant.
Apa yang ditakuti orang jahat akan ditimpakan padanya, tetapi keinginan orang benar akan dikabulkan.
25 As the whirlwind passeth by, the wicked is no more; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
Saat badai hidup menerpa, orang jahat akan binasa tetapi orang benar berdiri teguh selama-lamanya.
26 As vinegar is to the teeth, and as smoke is to the eyes: so is the sluggard to those that send him.
Ibarat cuka membuat gigi ngilu dan asap membuat mata pedih, demikianlah orang malas bagi majikannya.
27 The fear of the Lord increaseth [man's] days; but the years of the wicked will be shortened.
Sikap hormat dan takut akan TUHAN mendatangkan panjang umur, tetapi tahun kehidupan orang jahat akan diperpendek.
28 The expectation of the righteous is joy; but the hope of the wicked shall perish.
Harapan orang benar menghasilkan sukacita, tetapi harapan orang jahat akan kandas.
29 The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the upright; but terror is destined to the workers of injustice.
Jalan hidup yang diajarkan TUHAN menjadi benteng pelindung bagi orang benar sebab mereka mengikutinya, tetapi mendatangkan kebinasaan bagi orang jahat.
30 The righteous shall never be removed; but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.
Orang benar akan tetap tinggal di negeri TUHAN, tetapi orang jahat pasti disingkirkan.
31 The mouth of the just uttereth wisdom; but the tongue of perverseness shall be cut out.
Orang benar memberikan nasihat yang bijak, tetapi orang yang bercabang lidah akan dibinasakan.
32 The lips of the righteous know [how to obtain] favor; but the mouth of the wicked [speaketh] perverseness.
Perkataan orang benar membangun sesama, tetapi perkataan orang jahat merusak.
