Proverbs 10
1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son causeth [his] father to rejoice; but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.
Proverbes de Salomon. Un fils sage fait la joie d’un père, Et un fils insensé le chagrin de sa mère.
2 Treasures of wickedness will not profit aught; but righteousness will deliver from death.
Les trésors de la méchanceté ne profitent pas, Mais la justice délivre de la mort.
3 The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish; but the sinful desires of the wicked will he cast away.
L’Éternel ne laisse pas le juste souffrir de la faim, Mais il repousse l’avidité des méchants.
4 He becometh poor that laboreth with an indolent hand, but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
Celui qui agit d’une main lâche s’appauvrit, Mais la main des diligents enrichit.
5 He that gathereth in summer is an intelligent son; [but] he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
Celui qui amasse pendant l’été est un fils prudent, Celui qui dort pendant la moisson est un fils qui fait honte.
6 Blessings come upon the head of the righteous; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence.
Il y a des bénédictions sur la tête du juste, Mais la violence couvre la bouche des méchants.
7 The memory of the just is [destined] to be blessed; but the name of the wicked shall rot.
La mémoire du juste est en bénédiction, Mais le nom des méchants tombe en pourriture.
8 The wise in heart will accept commandments; but he that is a fool in his speaking will stumble.
Celui qui est sage de cœur reçoit les préceptes, Mais celui qui est insensé des lèvres court à sa perte.
9 He that walketh uprightly ever walketh securely; but he that perverteth his ways will be punished.
Celui qui marche dans l’intégrité marche avec assurance, Mais celui qui prend des voies tortueuses sera découvert.
10 He that winketh with the eye causeth vexation; and he that is a fool in his speaking will stumble.
Celui qui cligne des yeux est une cause de chagrin, Et celui qui est insensé des lèvres court à sa perte.
11 A source of life is the mouth of the righteous; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence.
La bouche du juste est une source de vie, Mais la violence couvre la bouche des méchants.
12 Hatred stirreth up strifes; but love throweth a cover over all transgressions.
La haine excite des querelles, Mais l’amour couvre toutes les fautes.
13 On the lips of the man of understanding there is found wisdom: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of sense.
Sur les lèvres de l’homme intelligent se trouve la sagesse, Mais la verge est pour le dos de celui qui est dépourvu de sens.
14 Wise men treasure up knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish is an approaching terror.
Les sages tiennent la science en réserve, Mais la bouche de l’insensé est une ruine prochaine.
15 The wealth of the rich man is his strong town: the terror of the poor is their poverty.
La fortune est pour le riche une ville forte; La ruine des misérables, c’est leur pauvreté.
16 The labor of the righteous [tendeth] to life: the product of the wicked is for sin.
L’œuvre du juste est pour la vie, Le gain du méchant est pour le péché.
17 On the way unto life is he that observeth correction; but he that forsaketh reproof is in error.
Celui qui se souvient de la correction prend le chemin de la vie, Mais celui qui oublie la réprimande s’égare.
18 He that hideth hatred hath lips of falsehood; and he that spreadeth abroad an evil report, is a fool.
Celui qui dissimule la haine a des lèvres menteuses, Et celui qui répand la calomnie est un insensé.
19 In a multitude of words transgression cannot be avoided; but he that refraineth his lips is intelligent.
Celui qui parle beaucoup ne manque pas de pécher, Mais celui qui retient ses lèvres est un homme prudent.
20 [Like] choice silver is the tongue of the righteous: the heart of the wicked is worth but very little.
La langue du juste est un argent de choix; Le cœur des méchants est peu de chose.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die through lack of sense.
Les lèvres du juste dirigent beaucoup d’hommes, Et les insensés meurent par défaut de raison.
22 The blessing of the Lord it is which maketh rich, and painful labor addeth nothing thereto.
C’est la bénédiction de l’Éternel qui enrichit, Et il ne la fait suivre d’aucun chagrin.
23 It is as sport to a fool to do wicked deeds; but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
Commettre le crime paraît un jeu à l’insensé, Mais la sagesse appartient à l’homme intelligent.
24 What the wicked dreadeth, that will come upon him: but the longing of the righteous will God grant.
Ce que redoute le méchant, c’est ce qui lui arrive; Et ce que désirent les justes leur est accordé.
25 As the whirlwind passeth by, the wicked is no more; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
Comme passe le tourbillon, ainsi disparaît le méchant; Mais le juste a des fondements éternels.
26 As vinegar is to the teeth, and as smoke is to the eyes: so is the sluggard to those that send him.
Ce que le vinaigre est aux dents et la fumée aux yeux, Tel est le paresseux pour celui qui l’envoie.
27 The fear of the Lord increaseth [man's] days; but the years of the wicked will be shortened.
La crainte de l’Éternel augmente les jours, Mais les années des méchants sont abrégées.
28 The expectation of the righteous is joy; but the hope of the wicked shall perish.
L’attente des justes n’est que joie, Mais l’espérance des méchants périra.
29 The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the upright; but terror is destined to the workers of injustice.
La voie de l’Éternel est un rempart pour l’intégrité, Mais elle est une ruine pour ceux qui font le mal.
30 The righteous shall never be removed; but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.
Le juste ne chancellera jamais, Mais les méchants n’habiteront pas le pays.
31 The mouth of the just uttereth wisdom; but the tongue of perverseness shall be cut out.
La bouche du juste produit la sagesse, Mais la langue perverse sera retranchée.
32 The lips of the righteous know [how to obtain] favor; but the mouth of the wicked [speaketh] perverseness.
Les lèvres du juste connaissent la grâce, Et la bouche des méchants la perversité.
