Numbers 22
1 And the children of Israel set forward, and encamped in the plains of Moab, on this side of the Jordan, opposite Jericho.
Les fils d'Israël, étant partis, campèrent à l'ouest de Moab, sur les rives du Jourdain, en face de Jéricho.
2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Emorites.
Or, Balac, fils de Séphor, avait vu comme Israël venait de traiter l'Amorrhéen
3 And Moab was greatly afraid of the people, because it was numerous; and Moab was horrified because of the children of Israel.
Moab eut donc grande crainte du peuple qui était très-nombreux; Moab fut saisi d'effroi à l'aspect des fils d'Israël,
4 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now will this assemblage devour all that is round about us, as the ox devoureth the grass of the field; and Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.
Et dit aux anciens de Madian: Ce peuple va maintenant nous dévorer, comme un veau dévore l'herbe des champs; il va dévorer tout ce qui l'entoure. En ce temps-là Balac, fils de Séphor, était roi de Moab.
5 And he sent messengers unto Bil'am the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river, in the land of the children of his people, to have him called; saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt; behold, it covereth the surface of the earth, and it is abiding opposite to me:
Et il envoya des anciens à Phathura, qui est sur la rivière du territoire des fils de son peuple, pour appeler Balaam, fils de Béor, disant: Voilà qu'un peuple est venu d'Egypte, il couvre la face de la terre, il est campé tout près de moi;
6 And now do but come, curse me this people; for it is too mighty for me; peradventure I may be able to smite it, that I may drive it out of the land; for I know that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.
Viens donc, et maudis ce peuple, car il est plus puissant que nous; si nous pouvions les frapper séparément, je les chasserais de cette terre. Or, je le sais, ceux que tu bénis sont bénis, ceux que tu maudis sont maudits.
7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Bil'am, and spoke unto him the words of Balak.
Et les anciens de Moab, portant des présents, partirent avec les anciens des Madianites; arrivés chez Balaam, ils lui répétèrent les paroles de Balac,
8 And he said unto them, Remain you here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the Lord may speak unto me; and the princes of Moab abode with Bil'am.
Et il leur dit: Reposez-vous ici cette nuit, et je vous rapporterai ce que m'aura dit le Seigneur; les princes de Moab demeurèrent donc chez Balaam.
9 And God came unto Bil'am, and said, Who are these men with thee?
Et Dieu dit à Balaam: Qui sont ces hommes que tu as chez toi?
10 And Bil'am said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, the king of Moab, hath sent unto me, [saying, ]
Balaam répondit à Dieu: Balac, fils de Séphor, roi de Moab, me les a envoyés, disant:
11 Behold, there is the people that is come out of Egypt, and covereth the face of the earth: now come, denounce it for me; peradventure I shall be able to fight against it, and drive it away.
Un peuple est venu d'Egypte, il couvre la face de la terre, et il est campé tout près de moi; viens donc et maudis-le; peut-être pourrai-je ainsi le vaincre et le chasser de la contrée.
12 And God said unto Bil'am, Thou shalt not go with them: thou shalt not curse the people; for it is blessed.
Dieu dit à Balaam; tu ne partiras pas avec eux; tu ne maudiras pas ce peuple, car il est béni.
13 And Bil'am rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Go back to your land; for the Lord refuseth to give me leave to go with you.
S'étant donc levé de grand matin, Balaam dit aux princes de Balac: Retournez vers votre maître, Dieu ne me permet pas de partir avec vous.
14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Bil'am refuseth to come with us.
Et les princes de Moab, s'étant levés, arrivèrent chez Balac, disant: Balaam ne veut pas venir avec nous.
15 And Balak sent yet again princes, more in number, and more honorable than those.
Balac lui envoya des chefs plus nombreux et plus en honneur que les premiers,
16 And they came to Bil'am, and said to him, Thus hath said Balak the son of Zippor, Do not suffer thyself, I pray thee, to be prevented from coming unto me;
Ils allèrent chez Balaam, et ils lui dirent: Voici ce que dit Balac: Je t'en supplie, ne tarde pas à venir chez moi,
17 For I will honor thee greatly, and whatsoever thou mayest say unto me will I do: and only come, I pray thee, denounce me this people.
Je te comblerai d'honneurs; tout ce que tu me demanderas, je te l'accorderai; mais viens et maudis ce peuple.
18 And Bil'am answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not transgress the order of the Lord my God, to do a small or a great thing.
Balaam répondit aux princes de Balac: Balac dut-il me donner plein sa maison d'argent et d'or, il m'est impossible de ne pas tenir compte de la parole du Seigneur Dieu, ni de songer à faire plus ou moins qu'il ne m'a dit.
19 And now, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the Lord will farther speak with me.
Vous aussi restez donc cette nuit chez moi, et je saurai ce que le Seigneur me dira de nouveau.
20 And God came unto Bil'am at night, and said unto him, If to call thee the men have come, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I shall speak unto thee, that shalt thou do.
La nuit, Dieu vint à Balaam, et il lui dit: Puisque ces hommes sont venus te chercher, lève-toi et suis-les, mais tu feras selon la parole que je te dirai.
21 And Bil'am rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.
Balaam, s'étant levé de grand matin, bâta son ânesse et partit avec les princes de Moab.
22 And the anger of God was kindled, because he went; and an angel of the Lord placed himself in the way to be a hindrance to him; and he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.
Et Dieu se courrouça en son cœur de ce qu'il était parti, et l'ange de Dieu se leva pour l'arrêter; lui cependant, s'en allait avec son ânesse, et ses deux serviteurs étaient avec lui.
23 And the ass saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Bil'am smote the ass, to make her turn into the way.
L'ânesse, ayant vu l'ange de Dieu qui lui barrait la route l'épée nue à la main, se détourna et prit à travers champs; Balaam la frappa de sa baguette, pour la ramener sur la voie.
24 But the angel of the Lord stepped into a path between the vineyards, [with] a wall on this side, and a wall on that side.
Et l'ange de Dieu se tint dans les sentiers des vignes, ayant un mur à droite et un mur à gauche.
25 And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she forced herself against the wall, and pressed Bil'am's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.
L'ânesse, ayant vu l'ange de Dieu, se froissa contre le mur et froissa le pied de Balaam; celui-ci continua de la frapper.
26 And the angel of the Lord went yet farther, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left.
Mais l'ange de Dieu continua de les troubler; il s'en alla se placer dans un défilé où il n'y avait à se détourner ni à droite, ni à gauche.
27 And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she lay down under Bil'am: whereupon Bil'am's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a stick.
L'ânesse, ayant vu l'ange de Dieu, s'abattit sous Balaam. Celui-ci se mit en colère, et il frappa l'ânesse avec sa baguette.
28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Bil'am, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
Alors, Dieu ouvrit la bouche de l'ânesse, et elle dit à Balaam: Que t'ai-je fait pour que tu me frappes ainsi jusqu'à trois fois?
29 And Bil'am said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: had I but a sword in my hand, I would assuredly have now killed thee.
Balaam répondit à l'ânesse: Tu t'es jouée de moi, et si j'avais une épée à la main, je t'en aurais déjà percée.
30 And the ass said unto Bil'am, Am not I thy ass, upon which thou hast ridden from thy commencement unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? and he said, No.
Et l'ânesse dit à Balaam: Ne suis-je pas ton ânesse, sur laquelle tu es monté depuis ta jeunesse jusqu'à ce jour? T'ai-je jamais méprisé, et maltraité ainsi? Et il dit: Non.
31 Then the Lord opened the eyes of Bil'am, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head and prostrated himself on his face.
Or, Dieu ouvrit les yeux de Balaam, et Balaam vit l'ange du Seigneur lui barrant la route, l'épée nue à la main, et, s'étant courbé, il se prosterna la face contre terre.
32 And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thy ass these three times? behold, I went out to be a hindrance; because the journey which is odious to me was too quickly begun.
L'ange de Dieu lui dit: Pourquoi as-tu frappé ton ânesse jusqu'à trois fois? Me voici, je suis venu pour t'arrêter, parce que ton voyage ne m'est pas agréable; l'ânesse m'a vu, et elle s'est détournée trois fois.
33 And the ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times; if she had not turned aside from me, I would surely now not only have slain thee, but saved her alive.
Et si elle ne s'était détournée, je t'eusse fait périr; quant à elle, je l'aurais épargnée.
34 And Bil'am said unto the angel of the Lord, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou wast standing against me in the way; but now, if it be evil in thy eyes, I will return home again.
Balaam dit à l'ange du Seigneur: J'ai péché, mais je ne savais pas que vous me barriez la route, et s'il ne vous plaît point que je poursuive, je m'en retournerai.
35 And the angel of the Lord said unto Bil'am, Go with the men; however, only the word which I will speak unto thee, that shalt thou speak: and Bil'am went with the princes of Balak.
Mais l'ange de Dieu dit à Balaam: Va avec ces hommes; seulement sois attentif à répéter la parole que je te dirai. Balaam alla donc avec les princes de Balac.
36 And when Balak heard that Bil'am was come, he went out to meet him unto 'Ir-Moab, which is on the border of Arnon, which is at the outmost end of the boundary.
Celui-ci ayant appris que Balaam arrivait, sortit à sa rencontre jusqu'à la ville de Moab, qui est sur l'Arnon, à l'extrémité de la contrée.
37 And Balak said unto Bil'am, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to have thee called? wherefore camest thou not unto me? in truth, am I not able to honor thee?
Et Balac dit à Balaam: Ne t'ai-je point envoyé querir? Pourquoi n'es-tu pas venu vers moi? Réellement, ne suis-je point assez puissant pour t'honorer?
38 And Bil'am said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee; have I now any power whatever to speak the least? the word that God may put in my mouth, that alone must I speak.
Balaam dit à Balac: Me voici, je suis venu à toi; maintenant, sera-t-il en mon pouvoir de te dire quoi que ce soit? La parole que Dieu mettra dans ma bouche, je te la dirai.
39 And Bil'am went with Balak, and they came unto Kiryath-chuzoth.
Balaam partit ensuite avec Balac, et ils arrivèrent aux villes où étaient ses domaines.
40 And Balak slew oxen and sheep, and sent to Bil'am and to the princes that were with him.
Balac sacrifia des brebis et des bœufs; puis, il en envoya à Balaam et aux princes qui l'accompagnaient.
41 And it came to pass in the morning, that Balak took Bil'am, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, and he saw thence a portion of the people.
Le lendemain, Balac ayant pris Balaam, le fit monter vers la colonne de Baal, et de là il lui montra une part du peuple de Dieu.
