Numbers 13
1 And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,
Et là, le Seigneur parla à Moïse, disant:
2 Send thou out some men that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: one man each of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send, every one who is a prince among them.
Envoie d’entre les princes, un par chaque tribu, des hommes, qui considèrent la terre de Chanaan que je dois donner aux enfants d’Israël.
3 And Moses sent them out from the wilderness of Paran by the order of the Lord: they all were men, [who] were heads of the children of Israel.
Moïse fit ce que le Seigneur avait commandé, envoyant du désert de Pharan des hommes d’entre les princes dont voici les noms:
4 And these are their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.
De la tribu de Ruben, Sammua, fils de Zéchur;
5 Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Chori.
De la tribu de Siméon, Saphat, fils d’Huri;
6 Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Yephunneh.
De la tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Jéphoné;
7 Of the tribe of Issachar, Yigal the son of Joseph.
Delà tribu d’Issachar, Igal, fils de Joseph;
8 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea, the son of Nun.
De la tribu d’Ephraïm, Osée, fils de Nun;
9 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.
De la tribu de Benjamin, Phalti, fils de Raphu;
10 Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.
De la tribu de Zabulon, Geddiel, fils de Sodi;
11 Of the tribe of Joseph, of the tribe of Menasseh, Gaddi the son of Sussi.
De la tribu de Joseph, du sceptre de Manassé, Gaddi, fils de Susi;
12 Of the tribe of Dan, 'Ammiel the son of Gemalli.
De la tribu de Dan, Ammiel, fils de Gémalli;
13 Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.
De la tribu d’Aser, Sthur, fils de Michaël;
14 Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nachbi the son of Vophsi.
De la tribu de Nephthali, Nahabi, fils de Vapsi;
15 Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
De la tribu de Gad, Guel, fils de Machi.
16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land; and Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua [[Yehoshua']].
Ce sont là les noms des hommes qu’envoya Moïse, pour considérer la terre; et il donna à Osée, fils de Nun, le nom de Josué.
17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and he said unto them, Go you up this way at the south side, and go up into the mountain;
Moïse les envoya donc pour considérer la terre de Chanaan, et il leur dit: Montez par le côté méridional. Or, lorsque vous serez arrivés aux montagnes,
18 And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwell therein, whether they be strong or weak, whether they be few or many;
Considérez la terre, ce qu’elle est, et le peuple qui l’habite, s’il est fort ou faible, s’il est en petit nombre, ou nombreux;
19 And what the land is on which they dwell, whether it be good or bad; and what the cities are in which they dwell, whether in open places, or in strongholds;
Si la terre elle-même est bonne ou mauvaise, ce que sont les villes, si elles sont murées ou sans murs.
20 And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be trees therein, or not; and take ye courage, and take away some of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the season of the first ripening of grapes.
Si le sol est gras ou stérile, bien boisé ou sans arbres. Fortifiez-vous, et apportez-nous des fruits de la terre. Or, c’était le temps auquel les raisins précoces peuvent être mangés.
21 And they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rechob, on the road to Chamath.
Lors donc qu’ils furent montés, ils explorèrent la terre depuis le désert de Sin, jusqu’à Rohob, en entrant à Emath.
22 And they ascended on the south side, and came unto Hebron; and there were Achiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of 'Anak; [now Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.]
Et ils montèrent vers le midi, et ils vinrent à Hébron, où étaient Achiman, Sisaï et Tholmaï, les fils d’Enac; car Hébron fut fondée sept ans avant Tanim, ville d’Egypte.
23 And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and they cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it upon a barrow between two; and [they took some] of the pomegranates and of the figs.
Et avançant jusqu’au Torrent de la grappe de raisin, ils coupèrent une branche de vigne avec son raisin, que deux hommes portèrent sur un levier. Ils portèrent aussi des grenades et des figues de ce lieu,
24 That place was called the valley of Eshcol, on account of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from there.
Qui fut appelé Néhélescol, c’est-à-dire, le Torrent de la grappe de raisin, parce que les enfants d’Israël avaient emporté de là une grappe de raisin.
25 And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.
Or, les explorateurs de la terre, étant retournés après quarante jours, toute la contrée parcourue,
26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and they brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.
Vinrent vers Moïse, Aaron et toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël dans le désert de Pharan qui est en Cadès; et leur ayant parlé ainsi qu’à toute la multitude, ils montrèrent les fruits de la terre;
27 And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou didst send us, and truly doth it flow with milk and honey; and this is its fruit.
Et ils racontèrent, disant: Nous sommes allés dans la terre vers laquelle vous nous avez envoyés, où coulent, en effet, du lait et du miel, comme on peut le connaître par ces fruits;
28 Nevertheless the people are strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are very strongly walled, and great; and the children of 'Anak also have we seen there.
Mais elle a des habitants très forts, et des villes grandes et murées. Nous avons vu là la race d’Enac.
29 The Amalekites dwell in the southern country; and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Emorites, dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the margin of the Jordan.
Amalec habite au midi, l’Héthéen, le Jébuséen et l’Amorrhéen dans les montagnes; mais le Chananéen demeure le long de la mer, et près des courants du Jourdain.
30 And Caleb stilled the people toward Moses, and he said, We can easily go up, and take possession of it; for we are well able to overcome it.
Cependant Caleb, pour apaiser le murmure du peuple, qui s’élevait contre Moïse, dit: Montons, et possédons la terre, parce que nous pouvons nous en emparer.
31 But the men who had gone up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
Mais les autres qui avaient été avec lui, disaient: Nous ne pouvons nullement monter vers ce peuple, parce qu’il est plus fort que nous.
32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying, The land through which we have passed to spy it out, is a land that consumeth its inhabitants; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.
Et ils décrièrent, parmi les enfants d’Israël, la terre qu’ils avaient examinée, disant: La terre que nous avons parcourue dévore ses habitants: le peuple que nous avons considéré est d’une haute stature.
33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of 'Anak, of the giants' [family]: and we were in our own eyes as grasshoppers, and so were we in their eyes.
Là nous avons vu certains monstres des enfants d’Enac, de la race gigantesque: comparés à eux, nous paraissions comme des sauterelles.
