Nehemiah 8
1 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the open place which is before the water-gate; and they said unto 'Ezra the expounder that he should bring forward the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord commanded to Israel.
Llegado el mes séptimo los hijos de Israel estaban ya en sus ciudades. Entonces se congregó todo el pueblo como un solo hombre en la plaza que está enfrente de la puerta del Agua, y dijeron a Esdras, el escriba, que trajese el Libro de la Ley de Moisés, que Yahvé había prescrito a Israel.
2 Then did 'Ezra the priest bring forward the law before the congregation both of men and women, and every one that had understanding to listen [attentively], on the first day of the seventh month;
Trajo el sacerdote Esdras la Ley ante la asamblea, hombres y mujeres, y ante todos los que tenían inteligencia para escuchar. Era el día primero del séptimo mes.
3 And he read therein in the open place which is before the water-gate from the first daylight until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand: and the ears of all the people were directed unto the book of the law.
Leyó en él delante de la plaza que está delante de la puerta del Agua, desde el alba hasta el mediodía, ante los hombres y las mujeres y los que eran capaces de entender; y todo el pueblo oía atentamente (la lectura del) Libro de la Ley.
4 And 'Ezra the expounder stood upon an elevated stand of wood, which they had made for the purpose: and beside him stood Matthithyah, and Shema', and 'Anayah, and Uriyah, and Chilkiyah, and Ma'asseyah, on his right hand; and on his left, Pedayah, and Mishael, and Malkiyah, and Chashum, and Chashbadanah, Zechariah, [and] Meshullam.
El escriba Esdras estaba de pie sobre una tribuna de madera que se había hecho para esta ocasión, y junto a él, a su derecha, estaban Matatías, Sema, Anayá, Urías, Helcías y Maasías, y a su izquierda, Fadaías, Misael, Malquías, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacarías y Mesullam.
5 And 'Ezra opened the book before the eyes of all the people; for he was [standing] higher than all the people; and as he opened it, all the people became silent.
Abrió Esdras el libro, a vista de todo el pueblo, por estar él más alto que todo el pueblo; y cuando lo abrió, se puso de pie todo el pueblo.
6 And 'Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God: and all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands; and they bowed their heads, and prostrated themselves before the Lord with their faces to the ground.
Esdras bendijo a Yahvé, el gran Dios. Y todo el pueblo levantando las manos, respondió: “¡Amén, Amén!” E inclinándose se postraron ante Yahvé, rostro a tierra.
7 Also Jeshua', and Bani, and Sherebyah, Jamin, 'Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiyah, Ma'asseyah, Kelita, 'Azaryah, Jozabad, Chanan, Pelayah, and the Levites, explained to the people the law: while the people remained where they stood.
Y Jesúa, Baní, Serebías, Jamín, Acub, Sabetai, Hodías, Maasías, Kelitá, Azarías, Josabad, Hanán, Falaías y los levitas explicaban la Ley al pueblo, permaneciendo este de pie en su lugar.
8 So they read in the book, in the law of God distinctly, and exhibiting the sense: so that [the people] understood what was read.
Leían en el libro, en la Ley de Dios, clara y distintamente, explicando el sentido; de manera que se entendía lo leído.
9 Then said Nehemiah, that is the Thirshatha, and 'Ezra the priest the expounder, and the Levites that explained to the people, unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord your God: mourn not, and weep not. For all the people were weeping, when they heard the words of the law.
Nehemías, gobernador, y Esdras, sacerdote y escriba, como también los levitas que hacían la interpretación para el pueblo, dijeron a todo el pueblo: “Este día está consagrado a Yahvé, vuestro Dios; no andéis tristes, ni lloréis”; pues todo el pueblo lloraba al oír las palabras de la Ley.
10 Then said he unto them, Go your way, eat fat things, and drink sweet drinks, and send portions unto him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy unto our Lord: and do not grieve yourselves; but let the joy of the Lord be your stronghold.
Díjoles además: “Id y comed manjares grasos y bebed vinos dulces, y enviad porciones a cuantos nada tienen preparado, porque este día está consagrado a muestro Señor. No os aflijáis, pues el gozo de Yahvé es vuestra fortaleza.”
11 So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, Be still! for the day is holy: and do not grieve yourselves.
Así calmaban los levitas a todo el pueblo, diciendo: “¡Callad, pues este día es santo; no andéis tristes!”
12 And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send out portions, and to prepare for themselves great joy: because they had understood the words which [the others] had made known unto them.
Entonces se retiró todo el pueblo a comer y beber, a repartir porciones y celebrar una gran fiesta, porque habían entendido lo que se les había enseñado.
13 And on the second day there gathered themselves together the chiefs of the divisions of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto 'Ezra the expounder, to obtain again intelligence of the words of the law.
Al segundo día se reunieron los jefes de las casas paternas de todo el pueblo, los sacerdotes y los levitas, con Esdras, escriba, para estudiar más intensamente las palabras de la Ley.
14 And they found written in the law that the Lord had commanded through means of Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast in the seventh month.
Y hallaron escrito en la Ley que Yahvé por medio de Moisés había ordenado que los hijos de Israel habitasen en cabañas durante la fiesta del mes séptimo,
15 And [they ordered] that they should publish and have proclamation made throughout all their cities, and through Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mountain and fetch olive-leaves, and oleaster-leaves, and myrtle-leaves, and palm-leaves, and leaves of the three-leaved myrtle, to make booths, as it is written.
y que se publicase y pregonase por todas sus ciudades, y en Jerusalén esta proclamación: “¡Salid al monte, y traed ramas de olivo, ramas de oleastro, ramas de mirto, ramas de palmera y ramas de árboles frondosos, para hacer cabañas conforme a lo prescrito!”
16 And the people went forth, and brought them; and they made themselves booths, every one upon his roof, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the open place by the water-gate, and in the open place by the gate of Ephraim.
Salió el pueblo para traerlas, e hicieron cabañas, cada cual sobre el terrado de su casa y en sus patios, también en los atrios de la Casa de Dios, en la plaza de la puerta del Agua, y en la plaza de la puerta de Efraím.
17 And all the congregation that were returned out of the captivity made booths, and dwelt in the booths; for since the days of Jeshua' the son of Nun until that day the children of Israel had not done so. And there was very great joy.
Todos los de la comunidad que habían vuelto del cautiverio se hicieron cabañas y habitaron en ellas; pues desde los días de Josué, hijo de Nun, hasta aquel día los hijos de Israel no habían celebrado (la fiesta) de tal manera. Y hubo muy grande alegría.
18 And he read in the book of the law of God, day by day, from the first day until the last day. And they celebrated the feast seven days, and on the eighth day the solemn assembly, after the prescribed manner.
(Esdras) leyó en el Libro de la Ley de Dios cada día, desde el día primero hasta el último, pues se celebró la fiesta por siete días; y al octavo tuvo lugar la asamblea solemne según el rito.
