< Leviticus 19 >

1 And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,
Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
2 Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy; for I the Eternal your God am holy.
“Speak to all the assembly of the people of Israel and say to them, 'You must be holy, for I Yahweh your God am holy.
3 Ye shall fear, every man, his mother and his father, and my sabbaths shall ye keep: I am the Lord your God.
Everyone must respect his mother and his father, and you must keep my Sabbaths. I am Yahweh your God.
4 Ye shall not turn unto the idols, and molten gods shall ye not make to yourselves: I am the Lord your God.
Do not turn to worthless idols, nor make for yourselves gods out of metal. I am Yahweh your God.
5 And if ye offer a sacrifice of peace-offering unto the Lord, ye shall offer it so that it may be favorably received from you.
When you offer a sacrifice of fellowship offerings to Yahweh, you must offer it that you may be accepted.
6 On the same day ye offer it shall it be eaten, and on the morrow: and whatever is left until the third day, shall be burnt with fire.
It must be eaten the same day you offer it, or on the next day. If anything remains until the third day, it must be burned up with fire.
7 And if the intention was that it should be eaten on the third day, it is an abomination, it shall not be favorably received.
If it is eaten at all on the third day, it is unclean meat; it must not be accepted,
8 And whoever eateth it shall bear his iniquity; because he hath profaned the hallowed thing of the Lord: and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
and everyone who eats it must carry his own guilt because he has defiled what is holy to Yahweh, and that person must be cut off from his people.
9 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather up the gleanings of thy harvest.
When you reap the harvest of your land, you must not completely reap the corners of your field, neither will you gather all the produce of your harvest.
10 And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, and the single grapes that drop in thy vineyard shalt thou not gather up; for the poor and the stranger shalt thou leave them: I am the Lord your God.
You must not gather every grape from your vineyard, nor gather the grapes that have fallen on the ground in your vineyard. You must leave them for the poor and for the foreigner. I am Yahweh your God.
11 Ye shall not steal; neither shall ye deny [another's property in your hands], nor lie one to another.
Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not deceive each other.
12 And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, and thou shalt not thus profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord.
Do not swear by my name falsely and profane the name of your God. I am Yahweh.
13 Thou shalt not withhold any thing from thy neighbor, nor rob him: there shall not abide with thee the wages of him that is hired, through the night until morning.
Do not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired servant must not stay with you all night until the morning.
14 Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling-block before the blind; but thou shalt be afraid of thy God: I am the Lord.
Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind. Instead, you must fear your God. I am Yahweh.
15 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment; thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the great; in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbor.
Do not cause judgment to be false. You must not show favoritism to someone because he is poor, and you must not show favoritism to someone because he is important. Instead, judge your neighbor righteously.
16 Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people; thou shalt not stand [idly] by the blood of thy neighbor: I am the Lord.
Do not walk around spreading slander among your people, but seek to protect your neighbor's life. I am Yahweh.
17 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thy heart: thou shalt indeed rebuke thy neighbor, and not bear sin on account of him.
Do not hate your brother in your heart. You must honestly rebuke your neighbor so as not to share in sin because of him.
18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people; but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am the Lord.
Do not take vengeance or hold any grudge against any of your people, but instead love your neighbor as yourself. I am Yahweh.
19 My statutes shall ye keep; thy cattle shalt thou not let gender with a diverse kind; thy field shalt thou not sow with mingled seeds; and a garment of mingled kinds, of linen and woollen, shall not come upon thee.
You must keep my commands. Do not try to breed your animals with different kinds of other animals. Do not mix two different kinds of seeds when planting your field. Do not wear clothing made of two kinds of material mixed together.
20 And if a man lie carnally with a woman, that is a bond-maid, betrothed to a man, but who hath neither been redeemed, nor hath her freedom been given her: there shall a scourging be decreed; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free.
Whoever sleeps with a slave girl who is promised to a husband, but who has not been ransomed or given her freedom, they must be punished. They must not be put to death because she was not free.
21 And he shall bring his trespass-offering unto the Lord, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: a ram for a trespass-offering.
A man must bring his guilt offering to Yahweh to the entrance to the tent of meeting—a ram as a guilt offering.
22 And the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass-offering before the Lord for his sin which he hath done; and he shall be forgiven for his sin which he hath committed.
Then the priest will make atonement for him with the ram for the guilt offering before Yahweh, for the sin that he has committed. Then the sin which he has committed will be forgiven.
23 And when ye come into the land, and plant any kind of tree bearing edible fruit, then shall ye count the fruit thereof as uncircumcised: three years shall it be as uncircumcised unto you, it shall not be eaten.
When you come into the land and have planted all kinds of trees for food, then you must regard the fruit they produce as forbidden to be eaten. The fruit must be forbidden to you for three years. It must not be eaten.
24 But in the fourth year shall all its fruit be holy for praise-giving unto the Lord.
But in the fourth year all the fruit will be holy, an offering of praise to Yahweh.
25 And in the fifth year shall ye eat of its fruit, in order that it may increase unto you its productiveness: I am the Lord your God.
In the fifth you may eat the fruit, having waited so that the trees might produce more. I am Yahweh your God.
26 Ye shall not eat upon the blood; nor shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times.
Do not eat any meat with blood still in it. Do not consult spirits about the future, and do not seek to control others by supernatural powers.
27 Ye shall not cut round the corners [of the hair] of your head, neither shalt thou destroy the corners of thy beard.
You will not round off the corners of the hair on the sides of your head or shave off the edge of your beard.
28 And for the dead shall ye not make any incision in your flesh; and any etched-in writing shall you not fix on yourselves: I am the Lord.
Do not cut your body for the dead or put tattoo marks on your body. I am Yahweh.
29 Do not profane thy daughter, to cause her to be a prostitute; lest the land fall to prostitution, and the land become full of incest.
Do not disgrace your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the nation will fall to prostitution and the land will become full of wickedness.
30 My sabbaths shall ye keep, and my sanctuary shall ye reverence: I am the Lord.
You must keep my Sabbaths and honor the sanctuary of my tabernacle. I am Yahweh.
31 Turn not unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards; seek [them] not, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.
Do not turn to those who talk with the dead or with spirits. Do not seek them out, or they will defile you. I am Yahweh your God.
32 Before the hoary head shalt thou rise up, and honor the face of the old man; and thou shalt be afraid of thy God: I am the Lord.
You must rise before the gray-headed person and honor the presence of an old man. You must fear your God. I am Yahweh.
33 And if a stranger sojourn with thee, in your land, ye shall not vex him.
If a foreigner lives among you in your land, you must not do him any wrong.
34 As one born in the land among you, shall be unto you the stranger that sojourneth with you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
The foreigner who lives with you must be to you like the native-born Israelite who lives among you, and you must love him as yourself, because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am Yahweh your God.
35 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure.
Do not use false measures when measuring length, weight, or quantity.
36 Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the Lord your God, who have brought you forth out of the land of Egypt.
You must use just scales, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin. I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.
37 Ye shall therefore observe all my statutes, and all my ordinances, and do them: I am the Lord.
You must obey all my decrees and all my laws, and do them. I am Yahweh.'”
