Lamentations 3
1 I am the man who hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.
Je suis l’homme qui a connu la misère sous la verge de son courroux.
2 Me hath he driven out, and led into darkness, but not into light.
C’Est moi qu’il a poussé et fait marcher dans des ténèbres que ne traverse aucune lueur.
3 Surely against me doth he turn again and again his hand all the day.
Oui, contre moi il revient à la charge et tourne sa main tout le temps.
4 He hath caused my flesh and my skin to wear out, he hath broken my bones.
Il a consumé ma chair et ma peau, brisé mes os.
5 He hath built around me, and encompassed me with poison and hardship.
Il a bâti une clôture autour de moi et m’a enveloppé de venin et de tribulations.
6 In dark places hath he set me to dwell, like the dead of olden times.
Il m’a relégué dans des régions ténébreuses comme les morts, endormis pour toujours.
7 He hath placed a fence round about me, that I cannot get out; he hath made heavy my chain.
Il m’a entouré d’un mur que je ne puis franchir, chargé de lourdes chaînes.
8 Also when I cry aloud and make entreaty, he shutteth out my prayer.
En vain je crie et appelle au secours, il ferme tout accès à ma prière.
9 He hath fenced up my ways with hewn stone, my paths hath he made crooked.
Il barre mes routes avec des pierres de taille, il bouleverse mes sentiers.
10 A bear lying in wait is he to me, a lion in secret places.
Il est pour moi un ours aux aguets, un lion en embuscade.
11 On my ways hath he placed thorns, and torn me in pieces: he hath made me desolate.
Il a rendu impraticables mes voies et m’a déchiré; il a fait de moi une ruine.
12 He hath bent his bow, and placed me as a mark for the arrow.
Il a bandé son arc et m’a dressé comme une cible à ses traits.
13 He hath caused to enter into my reins the children of his quiver.
Il fait pénétrer dans mes reins les enfants de son carquois.
14 I am become a laughing-stock to all my people, their [jeering] song all the day.
Je suis devenu la risée de tous les peuples, un thème de leurs chansons incessantes.
15 He hath sated me with bitter things, he hath made me drunken with wormwood.
Il m’a rassasié d’herbes amères, abreuvé d’absinthe.
16 He hath also broken my teeth with gravel-stones, he hath covered me with ashes.
Il a broyé mes dents avec du gravier, il m’a roulé dans la cendre.
17 And my soul hath given up all thoughts of peace: I forget happiness.
Mon âme a dit adieu à la paix, j’ai perdu jusqu’au souvenir du bonheur,
18 And I said, Lost is my strength, my expectation also from the Lord.
et j’ai dit: "C’En est fait de mon avenir et de ce que je pouvais espérer de l’Eternel."
19 Remembering my affliction and [the cause of] my complaint, wormwood and poison.
Rappelle-toi ma misère et mon abandon: je ne connais que poison et absinthe.
20 Remembering [this] continually my soul is bowed down deeply within me.
En évoquant ces souvenirs, mon âme s’affaisse en moi.
21 [Yet] this answer will I give to my heart: therefore will I wait [in confidence].
Mais voici la pensée qui s’éveille en moi, et c’est pourquoi j’espère.
22 It is through the Lord's kindness that we are not consumed, because his mercies have no end;
C’Est que les bontés de l’Eternel ne sont pas taries et que sa miséricorde n’est pas épuisée.
23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Elles se renouvellent chaque matin, infinie est ta bienveillance.
24 The Lord is my portion, saith my soul, therefore will I wait for him.
"L’Eternel est mon lot, dit mon âme, aussi espéré-je en lui."
25 The Lord is good unto those that hope in him, to the soul that seeketh him.
L’Eternel est bon pour ceux qui mettent leur confiance en lui, pour l’âme qui le recherche.
26 It is good that one should wait and this in silence for the salvation of the Lord.
C’Est une bonne chose d’attendre en silence le secours de l’Eternel;
27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth;
une bonne chose aussi pour l’homme de porter le joug dès sa jeunesse;
28 That he sit in solitude and be silent; because He hath laid it upon him;
de s’asseoir solitaire en se résignant silencieusement, lorsque Dieu le lui impose.
29 That he put his mouth in the dust; perhaps there still is hope;
Qu’il incline sa bouche vers la poussière: peut-être est-il quelque espoir.
30 That he offer his cheek to him that smiteth him; that he be satisfied with reproach.
Qu’il présente la joue à celui qui le frappe et se rassasie d’humiliation
31 For the Lord will not cast off for ever;
car le Seigneur ne délaisse pas à tout jamais;
32 But though he have caused grief, yet will he have mercy according to the abundance of his kindnesses.
mais quand il a frappé, il exerce sa pitié selon l’étendue de sa bonté.
33 For he doth not afflict of his own will, and aggrieve the children of men.
Car ce n’est pas de bon cœur qu’il moleste et afflige les fils de l’homme.
34 To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth,
Lorsqu’on foule aux pieds tous les captifs du pays,
35 To pervert the justice [due to man] before the face of the Most High.
lorsqu’on fait fléchir le droit d’un homme à la face du Très-Haut,
36 To subvert a man in his contest—should the Lord not see this?
lorsqu’on fait tort à un homme dans sa juste cause, le Seigneur ne peut l’approuver.
37 Who is he that saith aught, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord hath not ordained it?
A qui donc suffit-il d’ordonner pour qu’une chose soit, si le Seigneur n’en a décidé ainsi?
38 Do not out of the mouth of the Most High come both the evil things and the good?
N’Est-ce pas de la bouche de l’Eternel qu’émanent les maux et les biens?
39 Wherefore should a living man complain? let every man complain because of his sins.
Pourquoi donc se plaindrait l’homme sa vie durant, l’homme chargé de péchés?
40 Let us search through and investigate our ways, and let us return to the Lord.
Examinons nos voies, scrutons-les et retournons à l’Eternel!
41 Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.
Elevons nos cœurs avec nos mains vers Dieu qui est au ciel!
42 We have indeed transgressed and rebelled: thou hast truly not pardoned.
Nous, nous avons failli et désobéi: toi, tu n’as point pardonné.
43 Thou hast covered [us] with thy anger, and made pursuit after us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied.
Tu t’es enveloppé de colère et tu nous as persécutés; tu as tué sans ménagement.
44 Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that no prayer should pass through.
Tu t’es entouré de nuages, pour empêcher les prières de passer.
45 As something loathsome and rejected hast thou rendered us in the midst of the people.
Tu as fait de nous une balayure, un objet de dégoût au milieu des nations.
46 Wide have all our enemies opened against us their mouth.
Tous nos ennemis ont ouvert la bouche contre nous.
47 Terror and a snare are come upon us, [with] desolation and breaches.
Notre partage, ce furent la terreur et le piège, la ruine et le désastre.
48 With streams of water runneth my eye down, because of the breach of the daughter of my people.
Mes yeux se répandent en torrents de larmes à cause de la catastrophe de mon peuple.
49 My eye trickleth down, and resteth not, without any intermission,
Mes yeux se fondent en eau sans s’arrêter, car il n’est point de répit au mal,
50 Till the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.
jusqu’à ce que l’Eternel regarde et voie du haut du ciel.
51 My eye affecteth my soul because of all the daughters of my city.
Le spectacle qui s’offre à mes regards accable mon âme à cause de toutes les filles de ma ville.
52 Those who are my enemies, without a cause, have chased me about like a bird.
Ils m’ont pourchassé comme un passereau, ceux qui me haïssent sans motif.
53 They have shut up in the dungeon my life, and have cast stones upon me.
Ils ont confiné ma vie dans la fosse et jeté des pierres sur moi.
54 Waters streamed over my head: I said, I am cut off.
Les eaux ont monté par-dessus ma tête, et j’ai dit: "Je suis perdu!"
55 I called on thy name, O Lord, out of the dungeon of the lowest depth.
Mais j’ai invoqué ton nom des profondeurs de la fosse.
56 Thou didst hear my voice: hide not thy ear to give me enlargement at my cry.
Tu as entendu mon appel: "Ne ferme pas ton oreille alors que je supplie pour ma délivrance."
57 Thou wast ever near on the day that I called on thee: thou saidst, Fear not.
Tu es venu près de moi le jour où je t’ai invoqué, tu as dit: "Sois sans crainte!"
58 Thou didst plead, O Lord, the causes of my soul: thou didst [before this] redeem my life.
Tu as pris en mains les causes qui me touchent, tu sauves ma vie.
59 Thou hast [now] seen, O Lord, the wrong I suffer: judge thou my cause.
Tu as vu, Eternel, le tort qu’on m’a fait: défends mon droit!
60 Thou hast seen all their vengeance, all their plans against me.
Tu as été témoin de leurs représailles, de tous leurs complots contre moi.
61 Thou hast heard their reviling, O Lord, all their plans against me,
Tu as entendu, Eternel, 'leurs outrages, toutes leurs machinations contre moi.
62 The speeches of these that rise up against me, and their device against me all the day.
Les lèvres de mes adversaires et leurs pensées sont dirigées contre ma personne.
63 Oh look upon their sitting down, and their rising up: I am their [jeering] song.
Regarde leurs faits et gestes: je suis l’objet de leurs chants moqueurs.
64 Render unto them a recompense, O Lord, according to the work of their hands.
Puisses-tu leur rendre la pareille, ô Eternel, les traiter selon l’oeuvre de leurs mains!
65 Give them confusion of heart, thy curse he upon them.
Inflige-leur l’angoisse du cœur: ta malédiction vienne sur eux!
66 Pursue them in anger and destroy from under the heavens of the Lord.
Poursuis-les de ton courroux et anéantis-les de dessous la voûte de tes cieux.
