Lamentations 3
1 I am the man who hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.
Je suis l’homme qui ai vu l’affliction par la verge de sa fureur.
2 Me hath he driven out, and led into darkness, but not into light.
Il m’a conduit et amené dans les ténèbres, et non dans la lumière.
3 Surely against me doth he turn again and again his hand all the day.
Certes c’est contre moi qu’il a tout le jour tourné et retourné sa main.
4 He hath caused my flesh and my skin to wear out, he hath broken my bones.
Il a fait vieillir ma chair et ma peau; il a brisé mes os.
5 He hath built around me, and encompassed me with poison and hardship.
Il a bâti contre moi, et m’a environné de fiel et de peine.
6 In dark places hath he set me to dwell, like the dead of olden times.
Il m’a fait habiter dans des lieux ténébreux, comme ceux qui sont morts depuis longtemps.
7 He hath placed a fence round about me, that I cannot get out; he hath made heavy my chain.
Il a fait une clôture autour de moi, afin que je ne sorte point; il a appesanti mes chaînes.
8 Also when I cry aloud and make entreaty, he shutteth out my prayer.
Même quand je crie et que j’élève ma voix, il ferme l’accès à ma prière.
9 He hath fenced up my ways with hewn stone, my paths hath he made crooked.
Il a barré mes chemins avec des pierres de taille; il a bouleversé mes sentiers.
10 A bear lying in wait is he to me, a lion in secret places.
Il a été pour moi un ours aux embûches, un lion dans les lieux cachés.
11 On my ways hath he placed thorns, and torn me in pieces: he hath made me desolate.
Il a fait dévier mes chemins et m’a déchiré; il m’a rendu désolé.
12 He hath bent his bow, and placed me as a mark for the arrow.
Il a bandé son arc, et m’a placé comme un but pour la flèche.
13 He hath caused to enter into my reins the children of his quiver.
Il a fait entrer dans mes reins les flèches de son carquois.
14 I am become a laughing-stock to all my people, their [jeering] song all the day.
Je suis la risée de tout mon peuple, leur chanson tout le jour.
15 He hath sated me with bitter things, he hath made me drunken with wormwood.
Il m’a rassasié d’amertumes, il m’a abreuvé d’absinthe.
16 He hath also broken my teeth with gravel-stones, he hath covered me with ashes.
Il m’a brisé les dents avec du gravier; il m’a couvert de cendre.
17 And my soul hath given up all thoughts of peace: I forget happiness.
Et tu as rejeté mon âme loin de la paix, j’ai oublié le bonheur;
18 And I said, Lost is my strength, my expectation also from the Lord.
et j’ai dit: Ma confiance est périe, et mon espérance en l’Éternel.
19 Remembering my affliction and [the cause of] my complaint, wormwood and poison.
Souviens-toi de mon affliction, et de mon bannissement, de l’absinthe et du fiel.
20 Remembering [this] continually my soul is bowed down deeply within me.
Mon âme s’en souvient sans cesse, et elle est abattue au-dedans de moi. –
21 [Yet] this answer will I give to my heart: therefore will I wait [in confidence].
Je rappelle ceci à mon cœur, c’est pourquoi j’ai espérance:
22 It is through the Lord's kindness that we are not consumed, because his mercies have no end;
Ce sont les bontés de l’Éternel que nous ne sommes pas consumés, car ses compassions ne cessent pas;
23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
elles sont nouvelles chaque matin; grande est ta fidélité!
24 The Lord is my portion, saith my soul, therefore will I wait for him.
L’Éternel est ma portion, dit mon âme; c’est pourquoi j’espérerai en lui.
25 The Lord is good unto those that hope in him, to the soul that seeketh him.
L’Éternel est bon pour ceux qui s’attendent à lui, pour l’âme qui le cherche.
26 It is good that one should wait and this in silence for the salvation of the Lord.
C’est une chose bonne qu’on attende, et dans le silence, le salut de l’Éternel.
27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth;
Il est bon à l’homme de porter le joug dans sa jeunesse:
28 That he sit in solitude and be silent; because He hath laid it upon him;
Il est assis solitaire, et se tait, parce qu’il l’a pris sur lui;
29 That he put his mouth in the dust; perhaps there still is hope;
il met sa bouche dans la poussière: peut-être y aura-t-il quelque espoir.
30 That he offer his cheek to him that smiteth him; that he be satisfied with reproach.
Il présente la joue à celui qui le frappe, il est rassasié d’opprobres.
31 For the Lord will not cast off for ever;
Car le Seigneur ne rejette pas pour toujours;
32 But though he have caused grief, yet will he have mercy according to the abundance of his kindnesses.
mais, s’il afflige, il a aussi compassion, selon la grandeur de ses bontés;
33 For he doth not afflict of his own will, and aggrieve the children of men.
car ce n’est pas volontiers qu’il afflige et contriste les fils des hommes.
34 To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth,
Qu’on écrase sous les pieds tous les prisonniers de la terre,
35 To pervert the justice [due to man] before the face of the Most High.
qu’on fasse fléchir le droit d’un homme devant la face du Très-haut,
36 To subvert a man in his contest—should the Lord not see this?
qu’on fasse tort à un homme dans sa cause, le Seigneur ne le voit-il point?
37 Who is he that saith aught, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord hath not ordained it?
Qui est-ce qui dit une chose, et elle arrive, quand le Seigneur ne l’a point commandée?
38 Do not out of the mouth of the Most High come both the evil things and the good?
N’est-ce pas de la bouche du Très-haut que viennent les maux et les biens?
39 Wherefore should a living man complain? let every man complain because of his sins.
Pourquoi un homme vivant se plaindrait-il, un homme, à cause de la peine de ses péchés?
40 Let us search through and investigate our ways, and let us return to the Lord.
Recherchons nos voies, et scrutons-les, et retournons jusqu’à l’Éternel.
41 Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.
Élevons nos cœurs avec nos mains vers Dieu dans les cieux.
42 We have indeed transgressed and rebelled: thou hast truly not pardoned.
Nous avons désobéi et nous avons été rebelles; tu n’as pas pardonné.
43 Thou hast covered [us] with thy anger, and made pursuit after us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied.
Tu t’es enveloppé de colère et tu nous as poursuivis; tu as tué, tu n’as point épargné.
44 Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that no prayer should pass through.
Tu t’es enveloppé d’un nuage, de manière à ce que la prière ne passe point.
45 As something loathsome and rejected hast thou rendered us in the midst of the people.
Tu nous as faits la balayure et le rebut au milieu des peuples.
46 Wide have all our enemies opened against us their mouth.
Tous nos ennemis ont ouvert la bouche sur nous.
47 Terror and a snare are come upon us, [with] desolation and breaches.
La frayeur et la fosse sont venues sur nous, la destruction et la ruine.
48 With streams of water runneth my eye down, because of the breach of the daughter of my people.
Des ruisseaux d’eaux coulent de mes yeux à cause de la ruine de la fille de mon peuple.
49 My eye trickleth down, and resteth not, without any intermission,
Mon œil se fond en eau, il ne cesse pas et n’a point de relâche,
50 Till the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.
jusqu’à ce que l’Éternel regarde et voie des cieux.
51 My eye affecteth my soul because of all the daughters of my city.
Mon œil afflige mon âme à cause de toutes les filles de ma ville.
52 Those who are my enemies, without a cause, have chased me about like a bird.
Ceux qui sont mes ennemis sans cause m’ont donné la chasse comme à l’oiseau.
53 They have shut up in the dungeon my life, and have cast stones upon me.
Ils m’ont ôté la vie dans une fosse, et ont jeté des pierres sur moi.
54 Waters streamed over my head: I said, I am cut off.
Les eaux ont coulé par-dessus ma tête; j’ai dit: Je suis retranché!
55 I called on thy name, O Lord, out of the dungeon of the lowest depth.
J’ai invoqué ton nom, ô Éternel! de la fosse des abîmes.
56 Thou didst hear my voice: hide not thy ear to give me enlargement at my cry.
Tu as entendu ma voix; ne cache point ton oreille à mon soupir, à mon cri.
57 Thou wast ever near on the day that I called on thee: thou saidst, Fear not.
Tu t’es approché au jour où je t’ai invoqué; tu as dit: Ne crains pas.
58 Thou didst plead, O Lord, the causes of my soul: thou didst [before this] redeem my life.
Seigneur, tu as pris en main la cause de mon âme, tu as racheté ma vie.
59 Thou hast [now] seen, O Lord, the wrong I suffer: judge thou my cause.
Tu as vu, Éternel, le tort qu’on me fait; juge ma cause.
60 Thou hast seen all their vengeance, all their plans against me.
Tu as vu toute leur vengeance, toutes leurs machinations contre moi.
61 Thou hast heard their reviling, O Lord, all their plans against me,
Tu as entendu leurs outrages, ô Éternel! toutes leurs machinations contre moi,
62 The speeches of these that rise up against me, and their device against me all the day.
les lèvres de ceux qui s’élèvent contre moi, et ce qu’ils se proposent contre moi tout le jour.
63 Oh look upon their sitting down, and their rising up: I am their [jeering] song.
Regarde quand ils s’asseyent et quand ils se lèvent: je suis leur chanson.
64 Render unto them a recompense, O Lord, according to the work of their hands.
Rends-leur une récompense, ô Éternel! selon l’ouvrage de leurs mains.
65 Give them confusion of heart, thy curse he upon them.
Donne-leur un cœur cuirassé; ta malédiction soit sur eux!
66 Pursue them in anger and destroy from under the heavens of the Lord.
Poursuis-les dans ta colère et détruis-les de dessous les cieux de l’Éternel.
