Judges 7
1 Then Yerubba'al, who is Gid'on, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Charod; and the camp of the Midianites was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
Da machte sich Jerubbaal, das ist Gideon, in der Frühe mit der gesamten Mannschaft, die bei ihm war, auf den Weg und lagerte sich bei der Quelle Harod, so daß sich das Lager der Midianiter nördlich von ihm in der Ebene nach dem Hügel More hin befand.
2 And the Lord said unto Gid'on, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand: lest Israel should vaunt themselves against me, saying, my own hand hath saved me.
Da sagte der HERR zu Gideon: »Das Volk, das du bei dir hast, ist zu zahlreich, als daß ich die Midianiter in ihre Gewalt geben sollte; die Israeliten könnten sich sonst mir gegenüber rühmen und behaupten: ›Wir haben uns durch eigene Kraft gerettet!‹
3 Now therefore, do proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gil'ad. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and ten thousand remained.
Darum laß vor dem Volk laut ausrufen: ›Wer sich fürchtet und Angst hat, der kehre um [und entferne sich vom Gebirge Gilead]!‹« Da zogen 22000 Mann von dem Kriegsvolk ab, und 10000 blieben zurück.
4 And the Lord said unto Gid'on, The people are yet too many; let them go down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I will say unto thee, This one shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee: and of whomsoever I will say unto thee, This one shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.
Der HERR aber sagte zu Gideon: »Das Volk ist immer noch zu zahlreich; führe sie hinab ans Wasser: dort will ich sie dir sichten; und von wem ich dir dann sagen werde: ›Dieser soll mit dir ziehen!‹, der soll dich begleiten; aber jeder, von dem ich dir sage: ›Dieser soll nicht mit dir ziehen!‹, der soll dich nicht begleiten!«
5 So he caused the people to go down unto the water: and the Lord said unto Gid'on, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as the dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that bendeth down upon his knees to drink.
Als nun Gideon die Leute an das Wasser hinabgeführt hatte, sagte der HERR zu ihm: »Jeden, der das Wasser mit der Zunge leckt, wie die Hunde es machen, den stelle besonders, und ebenso jeden, der niederkniet, um zu trinken.«
6 And the number of those that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people bent down upon their knees to drink water.
Es belief sich aber die Zahl derer, die das Wasser [mit der Hand in den Mund] geleckt hatten, auf dreihundert Mann; alle übrigen hatten sich auf die Knie niedergelassen, um Wasser (mit der Hand in den Mund) zu trinken.
7 And the Lord said unto Gid'on, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thy hand; and let all the other people go every man unto his place.
Darauf sagte der HERR zu Gideon: »Durch die dreihundert Mann, die (das Wasser) geleckt haben, will ich euch erretten und die Midianiter in deine Hand geben; alle übrigen Leute aber sollen ein jeder in seinen Wohnort zurückkehren!«
8 And they took the provision of the people in their hand, and their cornets; and all the rest of Israel he dismissed, every man unto his tent; but those three hundred men he retained: and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.
Da behielten sie den Mundvorrat der Leute und deren Posaunen bei sich zurück, alle übrigen israelitischen Männer aber entließ er, einen jeden in seine Heimat; nur die dreihundert Mann behielt er bei sich. Das Lager der Midianiter aber befand sich unterhalb von ihm in der Ebene.
9 And it came to pass, during the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Arise, get thee down into the camp; for I have delivered it into thy hand.
In derselben Nacht nun gebot ihm der HERR: »Mache dich auf, ziehe gegen das Lager hinab! Denn ich habe es in deine Hand gegeben.
10 And if thou fear to go down, then go thou down with Purah thy servant to the camp.
Fürchtest du dich aber hinabzuziehen, so steige mit deinem Knappen Pura zum Lager hinab;
11 And thou shalt hear what they will say; and after that shall thy hands be strengthened, and thou wilt go down unto the camp. And he went down with Purah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the camp.
wenn du dann belauscht hast, was man dort redet, wirst du alsdann den Mut in dir fühlen, gegen das Lager hinabzuziehen.« Da begab er sich mit seinem Knappen Pura hinab bis zu den Kriegern am äußersten Rande des Lagers.
12 And the Midianites and the 'Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like the locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is by the seaside for multitude.
Die Midianiter aber sowie die Amalekiter und die sämtlichen Horden aus dem Osten hatten sich in der Ebene gelagert so zahllos wie Heuschreckenschwärme, und die Menge ihrer Kamele war unzählbar wie der Sand am Gestade des Meeres.
13 And when Gid'on was come, behold, a man was telling a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream, and, lo, a baked cake of barley bread was rolling round through the camp of Midian, and came unto the tent, and struck against it so that it fell, and it turned it bottom upward, and the tent thus tumbled down.
Als nun Gideon dort ankam, erzählte ein Mann gerade seinem Kameraden einen Traum mit den Worten: »Denke dir: ich habe einen Traum gehabt! Ich sah, wie ein hartgebackenes Gerstenbrot in das midianitische Lager rollte, bis es an ein Zelt kam und dieses so traf, daß es umfiel: es wurde umgestürzt, das Unterste zuoberst, und so lag das Zelt da.«
14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gid'on the son of Joash, a man of Israel; into whose hand God hath delivered Midian, and the whole camp.
Da antwortete der andere: »Das bedeutet nichts anderes als das Schwert des Israeliten Gideon, des Sohnes des Joas! Gott hat die Midianiter und unser ganzes Lager in seine Hand gegeben!«
15 And it was, when Gid'on heard the narration of the dream, and its interpretation, that he prostrated himself, and returned unto the camp of Israel, and said, Arise; for the Lord hath delivered into your hand the camp of Midian.
Als nun Gideon die Erzählung von dem Traum und seine Deutung gehört hatte, warf er sich danksagend auf die Knie nieder, kehrte dann ins israelitische Lager zurück und rief: »Auf! Der HERR hat das Lager der Midianiter in eure Hand gegeben!«
16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put cornets in the hand of all of them, with empty pitchers, and torches in the pitchers.
Hierauf teilte er seine dreihundert Mann in drei Abteilungen und gab ihnen allen Posaunen in die Hand und leere Krüge, in denen sich aber Fackeln befanden.
17 And he said unto them, What you see me do, do ye likewise; and, behold, when I am come to the edge of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.
Dann befahl er ihnen: »Achtet darauf, wie ich es mache, und macht es ebenso! Was ich tun werde, sobald ich unmittelbar vor dem Lager angekommen bin, das tut auch ihr!
18 When I blow the cornet, I and all that are with me, then shall ye blow the cornets also on every side of all the camp, and say, For the Lord, and for Gid'on.
Wenn ich also samt allen Leuten, die zu meiner Abteilung gehören, in die Posaune stoße, so stoßt auch ihr in die Posaunen rings um das ganze Lager und ruft: ›Für den HERRN und für Gideon!‹«
19 And Gid'on, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the edge of the camp in the bcginning of the middle watch; when they had but newly set the sentinels: and they blew the cornets, and broke the pitchers that were in their hand.
Als nun Gideon mit den hundert Mann, die seine Abteilung bildeten, bei Beginn der mittleren Nachtwache – soeben hatte man die Wachen aufgestellt – unmittelbar vor dem Lager angekommen war, stießen sie in die Posaunen und zerschlugen die Krüge, die sie in der Hand hatten;
20 And the three companies blew the cornets, and broke the pitchers, and seized with their left hand the torches, and with their right hand the cornets to blow; and they cried, The sword for the Lord, and for Gid'on.
und zwar stießen die drei Abteilungen gleichzeitig in die Posaunen und zerschlugen die Krüge, nahmen dann die Fackeln in die linke Hand und die Posaunen in die rechte, um hineinzustoßen, und schrien: »Schwert für den HERRN und für Gideon!«
21 And they remained standing every man in his place round about the camp; and all [in] the camp ran, and shouted, and fled.
Dabei blieben sie ein jeder ruhig an seiner Stelle rings um das Lager herum stehen. Da geriet das ganze Lager in Bewegung, alles schrie und suchte zu fliehen;
22 And as the three hundred cornets sounded, the Lord set every man's sword against his fellow, even throughout all the camp; and [those in] the camp fled as far as Beth-hashittah to Zererah, up to the border of Abelmecholah, near Tabbath.
als jene dann aber in die dreihundert Posaunen stießen, richtete der HERR das Schwert eines jeden gegen den andern, und zwar im ganzen Lager, und das Heerlager floh bis Beth-Sitta nach Zerera hin, bis an das (Jordan-) Ufer von Abel-Mehola bei Tabbath.
23 And the men of Israel were called together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Menasseh, and they pursued after the Midianites.
Nun wurden die Mannschaften der Israeliten aus den Stämmen Naphthali, Asser und ganz Manasse aufgeboten und verfolgten die Midianiter.
24 And Gid'on sent messengers throughout all the mountain of Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and seize from them the waters as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan. And all the men of Ephraim assembled themselves, and seized on the waters as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan.
Auch hatte Gideon Boten im ganzen Berglande Ephraim umhergesandt mit der Aufforderung: »Kommt herab den Midianitern entgegen und schneidet ihnen das Wasser ab bis Beth-Bara und den Übergang über den Jordan!« Da folgten alle Männer vom Stamm Ephraim dem Rufe und schnitten ihnen das Wasser ab bis Beth-Bara und den Übergang über den Jordan.
25 And they captured two princes of the Midianites, 'Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew 'Oreb upon the rock 'Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued the Midianites; and the heads of 'Oreb and Zeeb they brought to Gid'on from the other side of the Jordan.
Auch nahmen sie die beiden midianitischen Fürsten Oreb und Seeb gefangen und hieben Oreb am Rabenfelsen nieder und erschlugen Seeb bei der Wolfskelter. Nach der Verfolgung der Midianiter aber brachten sie die Köpfe Orebs und Seebs zu Gideon auf die andere Seite des Jordans.
