Judges 6
1 And the children of Israel did the evil in the eyes of the Lord: and the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.
Les enfants d'Israël firent ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, et l'Éternel les livra entre les mains de Madian pendant sept ans.
2 And the hand of Midian prevailed over Israel; and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made for themselves the passes which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.
La main de Madian l'emporta sur Israël, et les enfants d'Israël se firent, à cause de Madian, des repaires dans les montagnes, des cavernes et des forteresses.
3 And it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the 'Amalekites, and the children of the east, and they went up against them;
Lorsqu'Israël eut semé, les Madianites, les Amalécites et les fils de l'Orient montèrent contre eux.
4 And they encamped against them, and destroyed the products of the earth, as far as Gazzah, and they left no sustenance for Israel, neither lamb, nor ox, nor ass.
Ils campèrent contre eux et détruisirent les produits de la terre, jusqu'à ce que tu arrives à Gaza. Ils ne laissèrent en Israël aucune subsistance, ni brebis, ni bœuf, ni âne.
5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and came as locusts in multitude; and both they and their camels were without number; and they came into the land to destroy it.
Car ils sont montés avec leur bétail et leurs tentes. Ils sont entrés comme des sauterelles pour la multitude. Ils étaient innombrables, eux et leurs chameaux, et ils sont entrés dans le pays pour le détruire.
6 And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the Lord.
Israël fut très humilié à cause de Madian, et les enfants d'Israël crièrent à l'Éternel.
7 And it came to pass, when the children of Israel had cried unto the Lord because of the Midianites,
Lorsque les enfants d'Israël crièrent à Yahvé à cause de Madian,
8 That the Lord sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, and he said unto them, Thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel, I led you forth out of Egypt, and brought you out of the house of slavery;
Yahvé envoya un prophète aux enfants d'Israël, qui leur dit: « Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, dit: Je vous ai fait monter d'Égypte et je vous ai fait sortir de la maison de servitude.
9 And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and I drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;
Je vous ai délivrés de la main des Égyptiens et de la main de tous ceux qui vous opprimaient, je les ai chassés devant vous et je vous ai donné leur pays.
10 And I said unto you, I am the Lord your God: ye shall not fear the gods of the Emorites, in whose land ye dwell; but ye have not obeyed my voice.
Je t'ai dit: « Je suis Yahvé, ton Dieu. Tu ne craindras pas les dieux des Amoréens, dans le pays desquels tu habites. » Mais vous n'avez pas écouté ma voix.'"
11 And there came an angel of the Lord, and sat down under the oak which was in 'Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abi'ezrite; and Gid'on his son was beating out wheat in the wine-press, to hide it from the Midianites.
L'ange de Yahvé vint s'asseoir sous le chêne qui était à Ophra, et qui appartenait à Joas, l'Abiézerite. Son fils Gédéon battait le blé dans le pressoir, pour le cacher aux Madianites.
12 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valor.
L'ange de Yahvé lui apparut et lui dit: « Yahvé est avec toi, vaillant homme! »
13 And Gid'on said unto him, Pardon, my lord, if the Lord be indeed with us, why then hath all this befallen us? and where are all his wonders of which our fathers have told us, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt! But now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.
Gédéon lui dit: « Oh, mon seigneur, si Yahvé est avec nous, pourquoi donc tout cela nous est-il arrivé? Où sont passées toutes les merveilles dont nos pères nous ont parlé, en disant: « Yahvé ne nous a-t-il pas fait monter d'Égypte? Mais maintenant, Yahvé nous a rejetés et nous a livrés entre les mains de Madian. »
14 And the Lord turned toward him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: behold, I have sent thee.
L'Éternel le regarda et dit: « Va avec ta force, et sauve Israël de la main de Madian. Ne t'ai-je pas envoyé? »
15 And he said unto him, Pardon my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the weakest in Menasseh, and I am the youngest of my father's house.
Il lui dit: « Seigneur, comment sauverai-je Israël? Voici, ma famille est la plus pauvre de Manassé, et je suis le plus petit dans la maison de mon père. »
16 And the Lord said unto him, Because I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.
Yahvé lui dit: « Je serai avec toi, et tu frapperas les Madianites comme un seul homme. »
17 And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy eyes, then give me a sign that thou hast been speaking with me;
Il lui dit: « Si maintenant j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, montre-moi un signe que c'est toi qui me parles.
18 Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thy return.
Ne t'en va pas, je te prie, jusqu'à ce que je vienne à toi, que j'apporte mon cadeau et que je le dépose devant toi. » Il a dit: « Je vais attendre que tu reviennes. »
19 And Gid'on went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.
Gédéon entra et prépara un chevreau et des gâteaux sans levain d'un épha de farine. Il mit la viande dans un panier et il mit le bouillon dans un pot; il l'apporta sous le chêne et le présenta.
20 And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and the broth pour out. And he did so.
L'ange de Dieu lui dit: « Prends la viande et les gâteaux sans levain, pose-les sur ce rocher, et verse le bouillon. » Il fit ainsi.
21 Then the angel of the Lord put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. And the angel of the Lord departed out of his sight.
Et l'ange de Yahvé étendit l'extrémité du bâton qu'il avait à la main, et toucha la viande et les gâteaux sans levain; et le feu monta du rocher et consuma la viande et les gâteaux sans levain. Puis l'ange de Yahvé s'en alla hors de sa vue.
22 And when Gid'on perceived that it was an angel of the Lord, Gid'on said, Alas, O Lord Eternal! because I have surely seen an angel of the Lord face to face.
Gédéon vit que c'était l'ange de Yahvé; et Gédéon dit: « Hélas, Seigneur Yahvé! Car j'ai vu l'ange de Yahvé face à face! »
23 And the Lord said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
Yahvé lui dit: « Que la paix soit avec toi! N'aie pas peur. Tu ne mourras pas. »
24 And Gid'on built there an altar unto the Lord, and called it Adonay-shalom [[the Eternal of Peace: ]] unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi'ezrites.
Et Gédéon y construisit un autel à Yahvé et l'appela « Yahvé est paix ». Aujourd'hui encore, il se trouve à Ophra, chez les Abiézrites.
25 And it came to pass in the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Take thy father's young bullock, and the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal which belongeth to thy father, and the grove that is around it shalt thou cut down.
Cette même nuit, Yahvé lui dit: « Prends le taureau de ton père, le second taureau âgé de sept ans, et jette l'autel de Baal que ton père a, et coupe l'ashère qui est à côté.
26 And build an altar unto the Lord thy God upon the top of this rock, on the level place, and take the second bullock, and offer [it as] a burnt-sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.
Puis tu construiras un autel à Yahvé, ton Dieu, sur le sommet de cette forteresse, de façon ordonnée, et tu prendras le second taureau, et tu offriras un holocauste avec le bois de l'ashère que tu abattras. »
27 And Gid'on took ten men of his servants, and did as the Lord had spoken unto him; but it came to pass, because he feared his father's household, and the men of the city, to do it by day, that he did it by night.
Alors Gédéon prit dix hommes parmi ses serviteurs et fit ce que Yahvé lui avait dit. Comme il craignait la maison de son père et les hommes de la ville, il ne put le faire de jour, mais il le fit de nuit.
28 And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was overthrown, and the grove that was around it was cut down, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar which had been built.
Les gens de la ville se levèrent de bon matin, et voici, l'autel de Baal était démoli, l'idole d'Astarté qui était près de lui était coupée, et le second taureau était offert sur l'autel qui avait été bâti.
29 And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And they inquired and searched, and then said, Gid'on the son of Joash hath done this thing.
Ils se dirent les uns aux autres: « Qui a fait cela? » Quand ils se sont renseignés et ont demandé, ils ont dit: « Gédéon, fils de Joash, a fait cette chose. »
30 Thereupon said the men of the city unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die; because he hath overthrown the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was around it.
Alors les gens de la ville dirent à Joas: « Fais sortir ton fils, et qu'il meure, parce qu'il a démoli l'autel de Baal et qu'il a abattu l'ashère qui était près de lui. »
31 But Joash said unto all that stood around him, Will ye indeed contend for Baal? will ye assist him? he that will contend for him, shall be put to death; [wait] until morning: if he be a god, let him contend for himself, because one hath overthrown his altar.
Joas dit à tous ceux qui s'opposaient à lui: « Allez-vous lutter pour Baal? Ou le sauverez-vous? Que celui qui le défendra soit mis à mort dès demain matin! Si c'est un dieu, qu'il se défende lui-même, car on a démoli son autel! »
32 And the people called him on that day Yerubba'al, saying, Let Baal contend against him, because he hath overthrown his altar.
C'est pourquoi, ce jour-là, il lui donna le nom de Jerub-Baal, en disant: « Que Baal conteste contre lui, car il a démoli son autel. »
33 And all the Midianites and 'Amalekites and the children of the east assembled together, and went over and encamped in the valley of Yizre'el.
Et tous les Madianites et les Amalécites et les fils de l'Orient se rassemblèrent; et ils passèrent et campèrent dans la vallée de Jizréel.
34 But the Spirit of the Lord endued Gid'on, and he blew the cornet: and Abi'ezer assembled and followed him.
Mais l'Esprit de Yahvé vint sur Gédéon, et il sonna de la trompette; et Abiezer se rassembla pour le suivre.
35 And he sent messengers throughout all Menasseh, who also assembled and followed him; and he sent messengers through Asher, and through Zebulun, and through Naphtali, and they came up to meet them.
Il envoya des messagers dans tout Manassé, et eux aussi se rassemblèrent pour le suivre. Il envoya des messagers à Aser, à Zabulon et à Nephtali, et ils montèrent à leur rencontre.
36 And Gid'on said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken,
Gédéon dit à Dieu: « Si tu veux sauver Israël par ma main, comme tu l'as dit,
37 Behold, I set up this fleece of wool in the threshing floor: if now there be dew on the fleece alone, and it be dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken.
voici, je mettrai une toison de laine sur l'aire de battage. S'il y a de la rosée sur la toison seulement, et qu'il y ait du sec sur tout le sol, alors je saurai que tu sauveras Israël par ma main, comme tu l'as dit. »
38 And it was so; and when he rose up early on the morrow, he squeezed the fleece together, and wrung dew out of the fleece, [making] a bowl full of water.
Il en fut ainsi, car il se leva de bonne heure le lendemain, pressa la toison et en tira la rosée, une coupe pleine d'eau.
39 And Gid'on said unto God, Let not thy anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once [more]; let me have a proof, I pray thee, but this once more with the fleece; let it, I pray, be dry upon the fleece alone, and upon all the ground let there be dew.
Gédéon dit à Dieu: « Que ta colère ne s'enflamme pas contre moi, et je ne parlerai que cette fois-ci. Laisse-moi, je t'en prie, faire l'épreuve de la toison pour cette fois seulement. Qu'il n'y ait de sec que sur la toison, et sur toute la terre, qu'il y ait de la rosée. »
40 And God did so that night; and it was dry upon the fleece alone, and on all the ground there was dew.
Dieu fit ainsi cette nuit-là, car il faisait sec sur la toison seulement, et il y avait de la rosée sur toute la terre.
