Judges 15
1 And it came to pass after some time, in the time of wheat-harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, Let me go in to my wife into the chamber; but her father would not suffer him to go in.
Après cela, au temps de la moisson du froment, Samson partit avec un chevreau pour visiter sa femme, et il dit: Je veux entrer auprès de ma femme dans la chambre nuptiale; mais son beau-père ne lui permit pas d'entrer.
2 And her father said, I verily thought that thou didst utterly hate her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? Let her be thine, I pray thee, instead of her.
Il le retint, disant: J'ai pensé que tu la haïssais, et je l'ai donnée à l'un de tes amis; n'a-t-elle pas une sœur plus belle et plus jeune? Qu'elle soit ta femme, au lieu de la première.
3 And Samson said to them, Now shall I be more blameless than the Philistines, though I do them evil.
Et Samson leur dit: Je suis irrépréhensible cette fois; je suis innocent, cette fois encore, à l'égard des Philistins, en leur faisant du mal.
4 And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took torches, and turned tail to tail, and put one torch between two tails in the midst;
Et Samson s'en étant allé, prit trois cents renards et trois cents torches; il accoupla les renards côte à côte, et il attacha une torche entre deux queues;
5 And he set the torches on fire, and let them go into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both shocks and standing corn, as also olive-yards.
Puis, il alluma les torches, et il lança les renards au milieu des blés des Philistins; les blés furent détruits depuis le sol jusqu'à l'épi, et la flamme atteignit les vignes et les oliviers.
6 Then said the Philistines, Who hath done this! And they answered, Samson, the son-in-law of the Thimnite, because he hath taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines went up, and burnt her and her father with fire.
Les Philistins dirent: Qui a fait cela? Et on leur répondit: C'est Samson, l'époux de Thamni, parce que le père de celle-ci lui a pris sa femme et l'a donnée à l'un de ses amis. Et les Philistins partirent, et ils la livrèrent aux flammes, elle et la maison de son père.
7 And Samson said unto them, Since ye will do the like of this, I will surely be avenged on you, and after that will I cease.
Et Samson dit: Puisque vous l'avez traitée de la sorte, certes, j'en tirerai vengeance sur vous, jusqu'à ce qu'il me plaise de cesser.
8 And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter; and he went down and tarried in the cleft of the rock 'Etam.
Et il les frappa en les bouleversant; ce fut une plaie très-grande; ensuite, il alla s'établir dans le souterrain de la roche d'Etam.
9 And the Philistines went up, and encamped in Judah, and spread themselves in Lechi.
Les Philistins, s'étant mis en campagne, campèrent en Juda, et ils essuyèrent un échec au lieu dit la Mâchoire.
10 And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they answered, To bind Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.
Et Juda leur dit: Pourquoi avez-vous marché contre nous? Ils répondirent: Nous sommes venus pour exterminer Samson et le traiter comme il nous a traités.
11 Thereupon went three thousand men of Judah down to the cleft of the rock 'Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines rule over us? and what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.
Trois mille hommes de Juda descendirent alors a la caverne de la roche d'Etam, et ils dirent à Samson: Ne sais-tu pas que les Philistins nous dominent? Pourquoi donc nous as-tu amené cette affaire? Et Samson leur dit: Je les ai traités comme ils m'avaient traité.
12 And they said unto him, To bind thee are we come down, to deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not assail me yourselves.
Et ils lui dirent: Nous sommes descendus pour te lier et te remettre en leurs mains. Et Samson leur dit: Jurez que vous-mêmes, vous n'êtes point venus contre moi?
13 And they said unto him, thus, No; for we will [only] bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand; but we will in no-wise kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.
Ils lui répondirent: Nullement, mais nous allons te charger de liens pour te livrer à eux, et nous ne te tuerons pas. Ils le lièrent donc avec deux cordes neuves, et ils l'enlevèrent de cette roche.
14 When he was come unto Lechi, the Philistines shouted against him; but the Spirit of the Lord came suddenly over him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax threads that are burnt with fire, and his bands melted from off his hands.
De là, ils allèrent jusqu'au lieu dit la Mâchoire, et les Philistins jetèrent de grands cris, et ils accoururent à sa rencontre. Aussitôt, l'Esprit du Seigneur s'élança sur lui, et les cordes qui lui retenaient les bras furent pour lui comme de l'étoupe brûlée, les liens de ses mains se rompirent.
15 And he found a fresh jaw-bone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and smote therewith a thousand men.
Et il trouva à terre une mâchoire d'âne, et il étendit la main, et il la ramassa, et, avec cette mâchoire, il tua mille hommes.
16 And Samson said, With a jaw-bone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw-bone of an ass have I smitten a thousand men.
Et Samson dit: Avec une mâchoire d'âne, je les ai détruits, et je les ai détruits; avec une mâchoire d'âne, j'ai tué mille hommes.
17 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jaw-bone out of his hand, and called that place Ramath-lechi.
Lorsqu'il eut cessé de parler et qu'il eut jeté la mâchoire, il appela ce lieu l'Elévation de la Mâchoire.
18 And he became very thirsty, and he called on the Lord, and said, Thou hast granted through the hand of thy servant this great deliverance; and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?
Il avait bien soif et il pleura devant le Seigneur, et il dit: Il vous a plu d'opérer cette grande délivrance par la main de votre serviteur; vais-je maintenant mourir de soif et retomber entre les mains des incirconcis?
19 But God clave a hollow place that was at Lechi, and there came forth water out of it; and he drank, and his spirit came again, and he revived; wherefore he called the name thereof 'En-hakkore, which is in Lechi unto this day.
Et le Seigneur ouvrit le creux de la mâchoire, et de l'eau en jaillit, et Samson but, et il ranima ses esprits, et il revint à la vie. A cause de cela, on donna à cette source le nom de Fontaine de l'Invocation, et encore de nos jours elle existe au lieu dit la Mâchoire.
20 And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.
Or, Samson jugea vingt ans Israël aux jours des Philistins.
