Judges 11
1 Now Yiphthach the Gil'adite was a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot; and Gil'ad had begotten Yiphthach.
Jefté de Galaad era un guerrero esforzado, pero hijo de una ramera, y Galaad era su padre.
2 And the wife of Gil'ad also bore him sons; and when the sons of the wife were grown up, they drove away Yiphthach, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in the house of our father: for the son of another woman art thou.
Galaad tuvo también de su esposa hijos, los cuales cuando crecieron expulsaron a Jefté, diciéndole: “Tú no serás heredero en casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de otra mujer.”
3 And Yiphthach fled away from his brothers, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and there gathered themselves to Yiphthach idle men, and they went out with him.
Huyó Jefté de sus hermanos y habitó en la tierra de Tob. Allí se allegaron a Jefté hombres pobres que le acompañaban.
4 And it came to pass after some time, that the children of 'Ammon made war against Israel.
Ahora bien, cuando, andando el tiempo, los hijos de Ammón atacaron a Israel,
5 And it was so, when the children of 'Ammon made war against Israel, that the elders of Gil'ad went to fetch Yiphthach out of the land of Tob.
sucedió que mientras los hijos de Ammón hacían guerra contra Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron a la tierra de Tob, en busca de Jefté;
6 And they said unto Yiphthach, Come, and become a leader unto us, that we may fight with the children of 'Ammon.
y dijeron a Jefté: “Ven y sé nuestro jefe, y combatiremos a los hijos de Ammón.”
7 And Yiphthach said unto the elders of Gil'ad, Did ye not hate me, and drive me away out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now, when ye are in distress?
Jefté contestó a los ancianos de Galaad: “¿No sois vosotros los que me habéis odiado y expulsado de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué venís ahora a mí cuando os veis apurados?”
8 And the elders of Gil'ad said unto Yiphthach, Therefore are we now come back to thee, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of 'Ammon; and thou shalt become unto us a head, unto all the inhabitants of Gil'ad.
Entonces los ancianos de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: “Por eso mismo nos dirigimos hoy a ti. Ven con nosotros y lucha contra los hijos de Ammón, y serás nuestro caudillo, el caudillo de todos los habitantes de Galaad.”
9 And Yiphthach said unto the elders of Gil'ad, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of 'Ammon, and the Lord give them up before me, shall I remain your head?
Contestó Jefté a los ancianos de Galaad: “Si me lleváis con vosotros para combatir a los hijos de Ammón, y Yahvé los entrega en mis manos, ¿seré vuestro caudillo?”
10 And the elders of Gil'ad said unto Yiphthach, The Lord shall be a hearer between us, if we do not so according to thy word.
Los ancianos respondieron a Jefté: “Oiga Yahvé lo que hablamos entre nosotros; juramos hacer lo que tú pides.”
11 Then went Yiphthach with the elders of Gil'ad, and the people appointed him over them as head and as leader; and Yiphthach spoke all his words before the Lord in Mitzpah.
Partió entonces Jefté con los ancianos de Galaad; y el pueblo le puso sobre sí como caudillo y jefe. Y Jefté confirmó todas sus promesas delante de Yahvé en Masfá.
12 And Yiphthach sent messengers unto the king of the children of 'Ammon, saying, What have I to do with thee, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?
Luego envió Jefté mensajeros al rey de los hijos de Ammón, diciendo: “¿Qué tienes tú conmigo? ¿Por qué has venido a hacerme guerra en mi país?”
13 And the king of the children of 'Ammon said unto the messengers of Yiphthach, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Yabbok, and unto the Jordan: and now restore these [lands] again in peace.
Contestó el rey de los hijos de Ammón a los mensajeros de Jefté: “Por cuanto Israel cuando subió de Egipto se apoderó de mi país desde el Arnón hasta el Yaboc y hasta el Jordán. Ahora, pues, devuélvemelo pacíficamente.”
14 And Yiphthach again sent messengers unto the king of the children of 'Ammon;
Jefté envió nuevos mensajeros al rey de los hijos de Ammón,
15 And he said unto him, Thus hath said Yiphthach, Israel did not take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of 'Ammon;
y le dijo: “Así dice Jefté: Israel no se apoderó del país de Moab, ni del país de los hijos de Ammón.
16 For when they came up out of Egypt, Israel walked through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;
Pues cuando Israel subió de Egipto, anduvo por el desierto hasta el Mar Rojo, y llegó a Cades.
17 And Israel then sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass, I pray thee, through thy land; but the king of Edom would not hearken; and also to the king of Moab they sent; but he would not consent: and Israel remained in Kadesh.
Entonces envió Israel mensajeros al rey de Edom, diciendo: Déjame pasar por tu país; mas no quiso escuchar el rey de Edom. También envió mensajeros al rey de Moab que tampoco quiso, de modo que Israel se quedó en Cades.
18 Then they wandered through the wilderness, and traveled round the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came from the rising of the sun to the land of Moab, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon: but they came not within the border of Moab; for the Arnon is the boundary of Moab.
Después de andar por el desierto, dio la vuelta al país de Edom y al país de Moab, y llegó al oriente del país de Moab, y acampó al otro lado de Arnón; pero no entró en el territorio de Moab; puesto que el Arnón es la frontera de Moab.
19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sichon the king of the Emorites, the king of Cheshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.
Entonces Israel envió mensajeros a Sehón, rey de los amorreos que reinaba en Hesbón, y le dijo: Déjame pasar por tu país hasta mi lugar.
20 But Sichon trusted not Israel to [let them] pass through his territory; and Sichon assembled all his people, and encamped in Yahaz, and fought against Israel.
Pero Sehón despreciando a Israel no lo dejó pasar por su territorio; antes reunió a todo su pueblo y acampó en Jahsa para hacer guerra contra Israel.
21 and the Lord the God of Israel delivered Sichon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them; and Israel took possession of all the land of the Emorites, the inhabitants of that country.
Pero Yahvé, el Dios de Israel, entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en manos de Israel, que los derrotó; y ocupó Israel todo el país de los amorreos que habitaban en aquella región.
22 And they took possession of all the territory of the Emorites, from the Arnon even unto the Yabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.
Conquistaron todo el territorio de los amorreos desde el Arnón hasta el Yaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.
23 So now the Lord the God of Israel hath dispossessed the Emorites from before his people Israel, and shouldst thou possess it?
Ahora que Yahvé, el Dios de Israel desposeyó a los amorreos ante Israel, su pueblo, ¿pretendes tú ser dueño de esa tierra?
24 Truly! that which Kemosh thy god may give thee to possess, even that canst thou possess; but whatsoever the Lord our God hath driven out from before us, even that will we possess.
¿No es cierto que tú consideras como tu herencia lo que Camos, tu Dios, te da en posesión? Así también nosotros poseemos todo aquello que Yahvé, nuestro Dios, nos ha dado en posesión por amor a nosotros.
25 And now art thou then any better than Balak the son of Zippor, the king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?
¿Estás tú acaso en mejor condición que Balac, hijo de Sefor, rey de Moab? ¿Peleó él jamás con Israel o le hizo guerra?
26 [And] while Israel hath dwelt in Cheshbon and in its towns, and in 'Ar'or and in its towns, and in all the cities that are along the margins of the Arnon, three hundred years: why did ye not recover them within that time?
En los trescientos años que Israel habita en Hesbón y sus aldeas, y en todas las ciudades que hay a orillas del Arnón, ¿por qué no las habéis reivindicado en ese tiempo?
27 Whereas I myself have not sinned against thee, and thou doest me wrong to war against me: may the Lord, the Judge, decide this day between the children of Israel and the children of 'Ammon.
Yo no he pecado contra ti, pero tú obras mal conmigo, haciéndome la guerra. Yahvé, el Juez, juzgue hoy entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Ammán.”
28 Nevertheless the king of the children of 'Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Yiphthach which he had sent to him.
El rey de los hijos de Ammón no escuchó las palabras que Jefté le había enviado a decir.
29 Then came upon Yiphthach the spirit of the Lord, and he passed through Gil'ad and Menasseh, and passed through Mitzpeh of Gil'ad, and from Mitzpeh of Gil'ad he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
Vino entonces el Espíritu de Yahvé sobre Jefté, quien recorrió a Galaad y Manasés; después pasó a Masfá de Galaad, y desde Masfá de Galaad marchó contra los hijos de Ammón.
30 And Yiphthach made a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of 'Ammon into my hand,
E hizo Jefté un voto a Yahvé, diciendo: “Si Tú de veras entregas a los hijos de Ammón en mi mano,
31 Then shall it be, that whatsoever cometh forth out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of 'Ammon, shall belong to the Lord, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.
lo que primero salga de las puertas de mi casa a mi encuentro cuando vuelva yo en paz de los hijos de Ammón, será para Yahvé, y lo ofreceré en holocausto.”
32 So Yiphthach passed over unto the children of 'Ammon to fight against them: and the Lord delivered them into his hand.
Avanzó, entonces, Jefté contra los hijos de Ammón, para pelear contra ellos, y Yahvé los entregó en sus manos.
33 And he smote them from 'Aro'er, even till thou comest to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto Abel-keramin, with a very great defeat; and the children of 'Ammon were humbled before the children of Israel.
Los derrotó desde Aroer hasta cerca de Minit, veinte ciudades, y hasta Abel Keramim (infligiéndoles) una muy grave derrota. Así fueron humillados los hijos de Ammón ante los hijos de Israel.
34 And Yiphthach came to Mizpah unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his sole child; he had beside her neither son nor daughter.
Luego Jefté volvió a Masfá, a su casa; y he aquí que su hija le salió al encuentro con tímpanos y danzas. Era su única hija; fuera de ella no tenía ni hijo ni hija.
35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his garments, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast bent me down very low, and thou art one of those that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto the Lord, and I cannot go back.
Al verla rasgó sus vestidos, y le dijo: “¡Ay, hija mía!, tú me has abatido sobremanera; tú misma eres la que me aflige. Pues yo he dado mi palabra a Yahvé y no puedo volverme atrás.”
36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me in accordance with what hath proceeded out of thy mouth; since the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee on thy enemies, on the children of 'Ammon.
Ella le respondió: “Padre mío, si has dado tu palabra a Yahvé, haz conmigo conforme a lo que salió de tu boca, ya que Yahvé te ha vengado de tus enemigos, los hijos de Ammón.”
37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: Let me alone two months, that I may descend to the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I with my companions.
Y dijo a su padre: “Hágase conmigo esto: Déjame libre por dos meses, e iré con mis compañeras por las montañas llorando mi virginidad.”
38 And he aid, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity on the mountains.
Respondió él: “Vete.” Y la dejó ir por dos meses. Se fue ella con sus compañeras, y lloró su virginidad sobre las montañas.
39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, and he fulfilled on her his vow which he had vowed; and she knew no man; and it became a custom in Israel,
Y cuando al cabo de los dos meses volvió a su padre, este cumplió en ella el voto que había hecho, sin que ella hubiera conocido varón. Por eso se hizo costumbre en Israel
40 That the daughters of Israel went from year to year to lament for the daughter of Yiphthach the Gil'adite four days in the year.
que las hijas de Israel fuesen cada año a llorar a la hija de Jefté galaadita, cuatro días al año.
