Judges 11
1 Now Yiphthach the Gil'adite was a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot; and Gil'ad had begotten Yiphthach.
Ora Iefte, il Galaadita, era uomo forte e valoroso, figlio di una prostituta; lo aveva generato Gàlaad.
2 And the wife of Gil'ad also bore him sons; and when the sons of the wife were grown up, they drove away Yiphthach, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in the house of our father: for the son of another woman art thou.
Poi la moglie di Gàlaad gli partorì figli e, quando i figli della moglie furono adulti, cacciarono Iefte e gli dissero: «Tu non avrai eredità nella casa di nostro padre, perché sei figlio di un'altra donna».
3 And Yiphthach fled away from his brothers, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and there gathered themselves to Yiphthach idle men, and they went out with him.
Iefte fuggì lontano dai suoi fratelli e si stabilì nel paese di Tob. Attorno a Iefte si raccolsero alcuni sfaccendati e facevano scorrerie con lui.
4 And it came to pass after some time, that the children of 'Ammon made war against Israel.
Qualche tempo dopo gli Ammoniti mossero guerra a Israele.
5 And it was so, when the children of 'Ammon made war against Israel, that the elders of Gil'ad went to fetch Yiphthach out of the land of Tob.
Quando gli Ammoniti iniziarono la guerra contro Israele, gli anziani di Gàlaad andarono a prendere Iefte nel paese di Tob.
6 And they said unto Yiphthach, Come, and become a leader unto us, that we may fight with the children of 'Ammon.
Dissero a Iefte: «Vieni, sii nostro condottiero e combatteremo contro gli Ammoniti».
7 And Yiphthach said unto the elders of Gil'ad, Did ye not hate me, and drive me away out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now, when ye are in distress?
Ma Iefte rispose agli anziani di Gàlaad: «Non siete forse voi quelli che mi avete odiato e scacciato dalla casa di mio padre? Perché venite da me ora che siete in difficoltà?».
8 And the elders of Gil'ad said unto Yiphthach, Therefore are we now come back to thee, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of 'Ammon; and thou shalt become unto us a head, unto all the inhabitants of Gil'ad.
Gli anziani di Gàlaad dissero a Iefte: «Proprio per questo ora ci rivolgiamo a te: verrai con noi, combatterai contro gli Ammoniti e sarai il capo di noi tutti abitanti di Gàlaad».
9 And Yiphthach said unto the elders of Gil'ad, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of 'Ammon, and the Lord give them up before me, shall I remain your head?
Iefte rispose agli anziani di Gàlaad: «Se mi riconducete per combattere contro gli Ammoniti e il Signore li mette in mio potere, io sarò vostro capo».
10 And the elders of Gil'ad said unto Yiphthach, The Lord shall be a hearer between us, if we do not so according to thy word.
Gli anziani di Gàlaad dissero a Iefte: «Il Signore sia testimone tra di noi, se non faremo come hai detto».
11 Then went Yiphthach with the elders of Gil'ad, and the people appointed him over them as head and as leader; and Yiphthach spoke all his words before the Lord in Mitzpah.
Iefte dunque andò con gli anziani di Gàlaad; il popolo lo costituì suo capo e condottiero e Iefte ripetè le sue parole davanti al Signore in Mizpa.
12 And Yiphthach sent messengers unto the king of the children of 'Ammon, saying, What have I to do with thee, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?
Poi Iefte inviò messaggeri al re degli Ammoniti per dirgli: «Che c'è tra me e te, perché tu venga contro di me a muover guerra al mio paese?».
13 And the king of the children of 'Ammon said unto the messengers of Yiphthach, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Yabbok, and unto the Jordan: and now restore these [lands] again in peace.
Il re degli Ammoniti rispose ai messaggeri di Iefte: «Perché, quando Israele uscì dall'Egitto, si impadronì del mio territorio, dall'Arnon fino allo Iabbok e al Giordano; restituiscilo spontaneamente».
14 And Yiphthach again sent messengers unto the king of the children of 'Ammon;
Iefte inviò di nuovo messaggeri al re degli Ammoniti per dirgli:
15 And he said unto him, Thus hath said Yiphthach, Israel did not take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of 'Ammon;
«Dice Iefte: Israele non si impadronì del paese di Moab, né del paese degli Ammoniti;
16 For when they came up out of Egypt, Israel walked through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;
ma, quando Israele uscì dall'Egitto e attraversò il deserto fino al Mare Rosso e giunse a Kades,
17 And Israel then sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass, I pray thee, through thy land; but the king of Edom would not hearken; and also to the king of Moab they sent; but he would not consent: and Israel remained in Kadesh.
mandò messaggeri al re di Edom per dirgli: Lasciami passare per il tuo paese, ma il re di Edom non acconsentì. Mandò anche al re di Moab, nemmeno lui volle e Israele rimase a Kades.
18 Then they wandered through the wilderness, and traveled round the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came from the rising of the sun to the land of Moab, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon: but they came not within the border of Moab; for the Arnon is the boundary of Moab.
Poi camminò per il deserto, fece il giro del paese di Edom e del paese di Moab, giunse a oriente del paese di Moab e si accampò oltre l'Arnon senza entrare nei territori di Moab; perché l'Arnon segna il confine di Moab.
19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sichon the king of the Emorites, the king of Cheshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.
Allora Israele mandò messaggeri a Sicon, re degli Amorrei, re di Chesbon, e gli disse: Lasciaci passare dal tuo paese, per arrivare al nostro.
20 But Sichon trusted not Israel to [let them] pass through his territory; and Sichon assembled all his people, and encamped in Yahaz, and fought against Israel.
Ma Sicon non si fidò che Israele passasse per i suoi confini; anzi radunò tutta la sua gente, si accampò a Iaaz e combattè contro Israele.
21 and the Lord the God of Israel delivered Sichon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them; and Israel took possession of all the land of the Emorites, the inhabitants of that country.
Il Signore, Dio d'Israele, mise Sicon e tutta la sua gente nelle mani d'Israele, che li sconfisse; così Israele conquistò tutto il paese degli Amorrei che abitavano quel territoro;
22 And they took possession of all the territory of the Emorites, from the Arnon even unto the Yabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.
conquistò tutti i territori degli Amorrei, dall'Arnon allo Iabbok e dal deserto al Giordano.
23 So now the Lord the God of Israel hath dispossessed the Emorites from before his people Israel, and shouldst thou possess it?
Ora il Signore, Dio d'Israele, ha scacciato gli Amorrei davanti a Israele suo popolo e tu vorresti possedere il loro paese?
24 Truly! that which Kemosh thy god may give thee to possess, even that canst thou possess; but whatsoever the Lord our God hath driven out from before us, even that will we possess.
Non possiedi tu quello che Camos tuo dio ti ha fatto possedere? Così anche noi possiederemo il paese di quelli che il Signore ha scacciati davanti a noi.
25 And now art thou then any better than Balak the son of Zippor, the king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?
Sei tu forse più di Balak, figlio di Zippor, re di Moab? Mosse forse querela ad Israele o gli fece guerra?
26 [And] while Israel hath dwelt in Cheshbon and in its towns, and in 'Ar'or and in its towns, and in all the cities that are along the margins of the Arnon, three hundred years: why did ye not recover them within that time?
Da trecento anni Israele abita a Chesbon e nelle sue dipendenze, ad Aroer e nelle sue dipendenze e in tutte le città lungo l'Arnon; perché non gliele avete tolte durante questo tempo?
27 Whereas I myself have not sinned against thee, and thou doest me wrong to war against me: may the Lord, the Judge, decide this day between the children of Israel and the children of 'Ammon.
Io non ti ho fatto torto e tu agisci male verso di me, muovendomi guerra; il Signore giudice giudichi oggi tra gli Israeliti e gli Ammoniti!».
28 Nevertheless the king of the children of 'Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Yiphthach which he had sent to him.
Ma il re degli Ammoniti non ascoltò le parole che Iefte gli aveva mandato a dire.
29 Then came upon Yiphthach the spirit of the Lord, and he passed through Gil'ad and Menasseh, and passed through Mitzpeh of Gil'ad, and from Mitzpeh of Gil'ad he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
Allora lo spirito del Signore venne su Iefte ed egli attraversò Gàlaad e Manàsse, passò a Mizpa di Gàlaad e da Mizpa di Gàlaad raggiunse gli Ammoniti.
30 And Yiphthach made a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of 'Ammon into my hand,
Iefte fece voto al Signore e disse: «Se tu mi metti nelle mani gli Ammoniti,
31 Then shall it be, that whatsoever cometh forth out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of 'Ammon, shall belong to the Lord, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.
la persona che uscirà per prima dalle porte di casa mia per venirmi incontro, quando tornerò vittorioso dagli Ammoniti, sarà per il Signore e io l'offrirò in olocausto».
32 So Yiphthach passed over unto the children of 'Ammon to fight against them: and the Lord delivered them into his hand.
Quindi Iefte raggiunse gli Ammoniti per combatterli e il Signore glieli mise nelle mani.
33 And he smote them from 'Aro'er, even till thou comest to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto Abel-keramin, with a very great defeat; and the children of 'Ammon were humbled before the children of Israel.
Egli li sconfisse da Aroer fin verso Minnit, prendendo loro venti città, e fino ad Abel-Cheramin. Così gli Ammoniti furono umiliati davanti agli Israeliti.
34 And Yiphthach came to Mizpah unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his sole child; he had beside her neither son nor daughter.
Poi Iefte tornò a Mizpa, verso casa sua; ed ecco uscirgli incontro la figlia, con timpani e danze. Era l'unica figlia: non aveva altri figli, né altre figlie.
35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his garments, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast bent me down very low, and thou art one of those that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto the Lord, and I cannot go back.
Appena la vide, si stracciò le vesti e disse: «Figlia mia, tu mi hai rovinato! Anche tu sei con quelli che mi hanno reso infelice! Io ho dato la mia parola al Signore e non posso ritirarmi».
36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me in accordance with what hath proceeded out of thy mouth; since the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee on thy enemies, on the children of 'Ammon.
Essa gli disse: «Padre mio, se hai dato parola al Signore, fà di me secondo quanto è uscito dalla tua bocca, perché il Signore ti ha concesso vendetta sugli Ammoniti, tuoi nemici».
37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: Let me alone two months, that I may descend to the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I with my companions.
Poi disse al padre: «Mi sia concesso questo: lasciami libera per due mesi, perché io vada errando per i monti a piangere la mia verginità con le mie compagne».
38 And he aid, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity on the mountains.
Egli le rispose: «Và!», e la lasciò andare per due mesi. Essa se ne andò con le compagne e pianse sui monti la sua verginità.
39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, and he fulfilled on her his vow which he had vowed; and she knew no man; and it became a custom in Israel,
Alla fine dei due mesi tornò dal padre ed egli fece di lei quello che aveva promesso con voto. Essa non aveva conosciuto uomo; di qui venne in Israele questa usanza:
40 That the daughters of Israel went from year to year to lament for the daughter of Yiphthach the Gil'adite four days in the year.
ogni anno le fanciulle d'Israele vanno a piangere la figlia di Iefte il Galaadita, per quattro giorni.
