Judges 11
1 Now Yiphthach the Gil'adite was a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot; and Gil'ad had begotten Yiphthach.
Or Jephté, le Galaadite, était un homme fort et vaillant. Il était fils d'une prostituée. Galaad devint le père de Jephthé.
2 And the wife of Gil'ad also bore him sons; and when the sons of the wife were grown up, they drove away Yiphthach, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in the house of our father: for the son of another woman art thou.
La femme de Galaad lui enfanta des fils. Lorsque les fils de sa femme grandirent, ils chassèrent Jephté et lui dirent: « Tu n'hériteras pas dans la maison de notre père, car tu es le fils d'une autre femme. »
3 And Yiphthach fled away from his brothers, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and there gathered themselves to Yiphthach idle men, and they went out with him.
Alors Jephté s'enfuit de chez ses frères et s'installa dans le pays de Tob. Des hors-la-loi se joignirent à Jephté, et ils sortirent avec lui.
4 And it came to pass after some time, that the children of 'Ammon made war against Israel.
Quelque temps après, les fils d'Ammon firent la guerre à Israël.
5 And it was so, when the children of 'Ammon made war against Israel, that the elders of Gil'ad went to fetch Yiphthach out of the land of Tob.
Lorsque les enfants d'Ammon firent la guerre à Israël, les anciens de Galaad allèrent chercher Jephté au pays de Tob.
6 And they said unto Yiphthach, Come, and become a leader unto us, that we may fight with the children of 'Ammon.
Ils dirent à Jephté: « Viens et sois notre chef, afin que nous combattions les enfants d'Ammon. »
7 And Yiphthach said unto the elders of Gil'ad, Did ye not hate me, and drive me away out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now, when ye are in distress?
Jephté dit aux anciens de Galaad: « Ne m'avez-vous pas haï et chassé de la maison de mon père? Pourquoi venez-vous à moi maintenant, alors que vous êtes dans la détresse? »
8 And the elders of Gil'ad said unto Yiphthach, Therefore are we now come back to thee, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of 'Ammon; and thou shalt become unto us a head, unto all the inhabitants of Gil'ad.
Les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephté: « C'est pourquoi nous nous sommes tournés vers toi maintenant, afin que tu ailles avec nous combattre les enfants d'Ammon. Tu seras notre chef sur tous les habitants de Galaad. »
9 And Yiphthach said unto the elders of Gil'ad, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of 'Ammon, and the Lord give them up before me, shall I remain your head?
Jephté dit aux anciens de Galaad: « Si vous me ramenez chez vous pour combattre les enfants d'Ammon, et que Yahvé les livre devant moi, serai-je votre chef? »
10 And the elders of Gil'ad said unto Yiphthach, The Lord shall be a hearer between us, if we do not so according to thy word.
Les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephté: « Yahvé sera témoin entre nous. Nous ferons ce que tu dis. »
11 Then went Yiphthach with the elders of Gil'ad, and the people appointed him over them as head and as leader; and Yiphthach spoke all his words before the Lord in Mitzpah.
Et Jephté s'en alla avec les anciens de Galaad, et le peuple l'établit comme chef et chef des anciens. Jephthé prononça toutes ses paroles devant Yahvé à Mitspa.
12 And Yiphthach sent messengers unto the king of the children of 'Ammon, saying, What have I to do with thee, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?
Jephté envoya des messagers au roi des enfants d'Ammon, en disant: « Qu'as-tu à faire de moi, pour que tu viennes me voir afin de combattre mon pays? »
13 And the king of the children of 'Ammon said unto the messengers of Yiphthach, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Yabbok, and unto the Jordan: and now restore these [lands] again in peace.
Le roi des enfants d'Ammon répondit aux messagers de Jephté: « Parce qu'Israël a pris mon pays quand il est monté d'Égypte, depuis l'Arnon jusqu'au Jabbok et au Jourdain. Maintenant, rétablissez donc ce territoire de façon pacifique. »
14 And Yiphthach again sent messengers unto the king of the children of 'Ammon;
Jephthé envoya de nouveau des messagers au roi des enfants d'Ammon,
15 And he said unto him, Thus hath said Yiphthach, Israel did not take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of 'Ammon;
et il lui dit: « Jephthé dit: Israël n'a pas pris le pays de Moab ni le pays des enfants d'Ammon;
16 For when they came up out of Egypt, Israel walked through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;
mais, lorsqu'ils sont montés d'Égypte, qu'Israël a traversé le désert jusqu'à la mer Rouge et qu'il est arrivé à Kadès,
17 And Israel then sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass, I pray thee, through thy land; but the king of Edom would not hearken; and also to the king of Moab they sent; but he would not consent: and Israel remained in Kadesh.
Israël a envoyé des messagers au roi d'Édom, en disant: « Laisse-moi passer par ton pays », mais le roi d'Édom n'a pas écouté. Mais le roi d'Édom n'écouta pas. Il envoya aussi des messagers au roi de Moab, mais celui-ci refusa, et Israël resta à Cadès.
18 Then they wandered through the wilderness, and traveled round the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came from the rising of the sun to the land of Moab, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon: but they came not within the border of Moab; for the Arnon is the boundary of Moab.
Ils traversèrent le désert, contournèrent le pays d'Édom et le pays de Moab, passèrent à l'est du pays de Moab et campèrent de l'autre côté de l'Arnon, mais ils n'entrèrent pas dans le territoire de Moab, car l'Arnon était la frontière de Moab.
19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sichon the king of the Emorites, the king of Cheshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.
Israël envoya des messagers à Sihon, roi des Amoréens, roi de Heshbon, et lui dit: « Laisse-nous passer par ton pays jusqu'à chez moi ».
20 But Sichon trusted not Israel to [let them] pass through his territory; and Sichon assembled all his people, and encamped in Yahaz, and fought against Israel.
Mais Sihon n'eut pas confiance en Israël pour passer par sa frontière; Sihon rassembla tout son peuple, campa à Jahaz et combattit Israël.
21 and the Lord the God of Israel delivered Sichon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them; and Israel took possession of all the land of the Emorites, the inhabitants of that country.
Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, livra Sihon et tout son peuple entre les mains d'Israël, qui les battit. Israël posséda tout le pays des Amoréens, les habitants de ce pays.
22 And they took possession of all the territory of the Emorites, from the Arnon even unto the Yabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.
Ils possédèrent toute la frontière des Amoréens, depuis l'Arnon jusqu'au Jabbok, et depuis le désert jusqu'au Jourdain.
23 So now the Lord the God of Israel hath dispossessed the Emorites from before his people Israel, and shouldst thou possess it?
Et maintenant que Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, a dépossédé les Amoréens de devant son peuple d'Israël, ne devriez-vous pas les posséder?
24 Truly! that which Kemosh thy god may give thee to possess, even that canst thou possess; but whatsoever the Lord our God hath driven out from before us, even that will we possess.
Ne posséderez-vous pas ce que Chemosh, votre dieu, vous donne à posséder? Ainsi, ceux que Yahvé notre Dieu a dépossédés devant nous, nous les posséderons.
25 And now art thou then any better than Balak the son of Zippor, the king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?
Es-tu meilleur que Balak, fils de Zippor, roi de Moab? A-t-il jamais lutté contre Israël, ou a-t-il jamais combattu contre eux?
26 [And] while Israel hath dwelt in Cheshbon and in its towns, and in 'Ar'or and in its towns, and in all the cities that are along the margins of the Arnon, three hundred years: why did ye not recover them within that time?
Israël a habité pendant trois cents ans à Hesbon et dans ses villes, à Arœr et dans ses villes, et dans toutes les villes qui sont sur le bord de l'Arnon! Pourquoi ne les as-tu pas récupérées pendant ce temps?
27 Whereas I myself have not sinned against thee, and thou doest me wrong to war against me: may the Lord, the Judge, decide this day between the children of Israel and the children of 'Ammon.
Je n'ai donc pas péché contre toi, mais tu me fais du tort en me faisant la guerre. Que Yahvé le Juge soit aujourd'hui juge entre les enfants d'Israël et les enfants d'Ammon. »
28 Nevertheless the king of the children of 'Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Yiphthach which he had sent to him.
Mais le roi des fils d'Ammon n'écouta pas les paroles de Jephté qu'il lui avait envoyées.
29 Then came upon Yiphthach the spirit of the Lord, and he passed through Gil'ad and Menasseh, and passed through Mitzpeh of Gil'ad, and from Mitzpeh of Gil'ad he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
Et l'Esprit de Yahvé vint sur Jephté, et il passa sur Galaad et Manassé, et passa sur Mitspa de Galaad, et de Mitspa de Galaad il passa aux fils d'Ammon.
30 And Yiphthach made a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of 'Ammon into my hand,
Jephté fit un vœu à Yahvé et dit: « Si tu livres effectivement les enfants d'Ammon entre mes mains,
31 Then shall it be, that whatsoever cometh forth out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of 'Ammon, shall belong to the Lord, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.
tout ce qui sortira des portes de ma maison pour venir à ma rencontre lorsque je reviendrai en paix des enfants d'Ammon appartiendra à Yahvé, et je l'offrirai en holocauste. »
32 So Yiphthach passed over unto the children of 'Ammon to fight against them: and the Lord delivered them into his hand.
Jephthé passa chez les enfants d'Ammon pour les combattre, et l'Éternel les livra entre ses mains.
33 And he smote them from 'Aro'er, even till thou comest to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto Abel-keramin, with a very great defeat; and the children of 'Ammon were humbled before the children of Israel.
Il les battit depuis Arœr jusqu'à Minnith, soit vingt villes, et jusqu'à Abelcheramim, avec une très grande défaite. Ainsi les enfants d'Ammon furent soumis devant les enfants d'Israël.
34 And Yiphthach came to Mizpah unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his sole child; he had beside her neither son nor daughter.
Jephté arriva à Mitspa, dans sa maison. Et voici que sa fille sortit à sa rencontre, avec des tambourins et des danses. Elle était son unique enfant. En dehors d'elle, il n'avait ni fils ni fille.
35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his garments, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast bent me down very low, and thou art one of those that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto the Lord, and I cannot go back.
Lorsqu'il la vit, il déchira ses vêtements et dit: « Hélas, ma fille! Tu m'as fait tomber bien bas, et tu es de ceux qui me troublent; car j'ai ouvert ma bouche à Yahvé, et je ne peux plus reculer. »
36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me in accordance with what hath proceeded out of thy mouth; since the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee on thy enemies, on the children of 'Ammon.
Elle lui dit: « Mon père, tu as ouvert ta bouche à l'Éternel; fais-moi selon ce qui est sorti de ta bouche, car l'Éternel s'est vengé pour toi de tes ennemis, les fils d'Ammon. »
37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: Let me alone two months, that I may descend to the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I with my companions.
Elle dit alors à son père: « Que cela se fasse pour moi. Laisse-moi deux mois, afin que je parte, que je descende sur les montagnes et que je pleure ma virginité, moi et mes compagnes. »
38 And he aid, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity on the mountains.
Il dit: « Va. » Il la renvoya pour deux mois; elle partit, elle et ses compagnes, et pleura sa virginité sur les montagnes.
39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, and he fulfilled on her his vow which he had vowed; and she knew no man; and it became a custom in Israel,
Au bout de deux mois, elle revint chez son père, qui fit avec elle le vœu qu'il avait fait. Elle était vierge. C'est devenu une coutume en Israël
40 That the daughters of Israel went from year to year to lament for the daughter of Yiphthach the Gil'adite four days in the year.
que les filles d'Israël allaient chaque année célébrer la fille de Jephté, le Galaadite, quatre jours par an.
