Joshua 9

1 And it came to pass, when all the kings that were on this side of the Jordan, in the mountain, and in the lowlands, and in all the coast of the great sea opposite Lebanon, the Hittites, and the Emorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, heard this,

जब उन सब राजाओं ने, जो यरदन पार, पर्वतीय क्षेत्र में तथा भूमध्य-सागर के तट पर लबानोन के निकट के निवासियों, हित्ती, अमोरी, कनानी, परिज्ज़ी, हिव्वी तथा यबूसियों ने इन घटनाओं के विषय में सुना,

2 That they assembled themselves all together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

वे यहोशू तथा इस्राएलियों से युद्ध करने के लिए एक साथ हो गए.

3 And when the inhabitants of Gib'on heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and unto 'Ai,

जब गिबयोन निवासियों ने वह सब सुना जो यहोशू ने येरीख़ो तथा अय के साथ किया था,

4 They also did work wilily, and went and feigned to be messengers, and took old sacks for their asses, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

उन्होंने भी चालाकी की, व अपनी यात्रा राजदूतों के रूप में शुरू की. उन्होंने अपने गधों पर फटे पुराने बोरे, दाखमधु की कुप्पी बांध दी और

5 And [put] old and patched-up shoes upon their feet, and old garments upon themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

पुरानी चप्पलें तथा फटे पुराने कपड़े पहन लिये. उनकी रोटी भी सूख चुकी थी जो चूर-चूर हो रही थी.

6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We are come from a far-off country; and now make ye a covenant with us.

वे यहोशू के पास गिलगाल में पहुंचे. उन्होंने यहोशू तथा इस्राएलियों से कहा, “हम दूर देश से आ रहे हैं. आप हमसे दोस्ती कर लीजिए.”

7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell in the midst of us; and how can we make a covenant with you:

किंतु इस्राएलियों ने हिव्वियों से कहा, “क्या पता, आप हमारे ही देश के निवासी हो; अतः हम आपसे दोस्ती क्यों करें?”

8 And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and whence come ye!

किंतु उन्होंने यहोशू से कहा, “हम तो आपके सेवक हैं.” तब यहोशू ने उनसे पूछा, “तुम लोग कौन हो और कहां से आए हो?”

9 And they said unto him, From a very far-off country are thy servants come, because of the name of the Lord thy God; for we have heard his fame, and all that he hath done in Egypt;

उन्होंने उत्तर दिया, “हम बहुत दूर देश से आए हैं, क्योंकि हमने याहवेह, आपके परमेश्वर की प्रशंसा सुनी है. हमने उनके बारे में जो उन्होंने मिस्र में किया था, सब सुन रखा है.

10 And all that he hath done to the two kings of the Emorites, that were beyond the Jordan, to Sichon the king of Cheshbon, and to 'Og the king of Bashan, who was at 'Ashtaroth.

हमने यह भी सुना है कि उन्होंने अमोरियों के दो राजाओं के साथ क्या किया, जो यरदन के उस पार थे; हेशबोन का राजा सीहोन और बाशान का राजा ओग, जो अश्तारोथ पर थे.

11 Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, as followeth, Take provisions with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, Your servants are we: and now make ye with us a covenant.

तब हमारे बुजुर्गो तथा देशवासियों ने कहा कि यात्रा के लिए ‘अपने साथ ज़रूरी सामान ले लो, और उनसे मिलने जाओ तथा उनसे कहना, “हम आपके सेवक हैं, तब आप हमसे दोस्ती कर लीजिए.”’

12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; and now, behold, it is dry, and it is become mouldy:

यात्रा शुरू करते समय हम गर्म रोटी लेकर घर से निकले थे; किंतु अब देखिए, ये रोटियां सूख चुकी हैं.

13 And these wine-bottles, which we filled, when new, — but behold, they are now become rent; and these our garments and our shoes are become worn out by reason of the very long journey.

और दाखमधु की ये थैली जब हम भर रहे थे, नई थी; किंतु अब देखिए, ये फट गई हैं. हमारे वस्त्र और चप्पलें फट रही हैं.”

14 And the men took of their provisions, but the decision of the Lord they did not ask.

तब इस्राएलियों ने याहवेह से पूछे बिना ही उनकी बात मान ली.

15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the princes of the congregation swore unto them.

यहोशू ने उनके साथ दोस्ती कर ली, और कहा कि उनकी हत्या न की जाएगी, सभा के प्रधानों ने उनसे यह वायदा किया.

16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt in the midst of them.

जब वे उनसे दोस्ती कर चुके, फिर तीन दिन बाद उन्हें पता चला कि वे तो उनके पड़ोसी ही थे, और वे उन्हीं के देश में रह रहे थे.

17 And the children of Israel broke up, and came unto their cities on the third day; and their cities were Gib'on, and Kephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiryath-ye'arim.

इस्राएल वंश के लोग तीसरे दिन गिबयोन, कफीराह, बएरोथ तथा किरयथ-यआरीम पहुंच गए.

18 And the children of Israel smote them not; because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the Lord, the God of Israel; but all the congregation murmured against the princes.

और उस शपथ के कारण, जो सभा के प्रधानों ने याहवेह, इस्राएल के परमेश्वर के सामने उनके साथ खाई थी, उनकी हत्या न कर सके. सब लोग इस कारण प्रधानों पर नाराज होने लगे.

19 And all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the Lord the God of Israel: and now we cannot touch them.

लोगों के सामने प्रधान यह कहते रहेः “हमने याहवेह, इस्राएल के परमेश्वर की शपथ ली है. अब तो हम उनको छू भी नहीं सकते.

20 This will we do to them, and we will let them live, that there be no wrath upon us, on account of the oath which we have sworn unto them.

हम इतना तो कर सकते हैं कि उन्हें जीवित रहने दें, अन्यथा उनसे की गई शपथ हम पर भारी पड़ेगी.”

21 And the princes said unto them, Let them live: and they became hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation, as the princes had spoken unto them.

प्रधानों ने लोगों से कहा: “उन्हें जीवित रहने दो!” तब गिबियोनियों को इस्राएली सभा के लिए लकड़हारे तथा पानी भरने वाले बनकर रहना पड़ा, जैसा उनके विषय में प्रधानों ने बताया था.

22 And Joshua called for them, and he spoke unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you: whereas ye dwell in the midst of us?

तब यहोशू ने गिबियोनियों को बुलाकर उनसे पूछा, “जब तुम लोग हमारे ही देश में रह रहे थे, तो तुमने हमसे झूठ क्यों बोला कि, ‘हम दूर देश से आए है!’

23 And now be ye cursed, and there shall not cease to be of you servants and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

तब अब तुम लोग शापित हो गए हो, और तुम मेरे परमेश्वर के भवन के लिए हमेशा लकड़ी काटने तथा पानी भरने वाले ही रहोगे.”

24 And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the Lord thy God had commanded his servant Moses to give unto you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; wherefore we were sore afraid for our lives because of you, and we have done this thing.

तब उन्होंने यहोशू से कहा, “इसके पीछे कारण यह है, कि आपके सेवकों को यह बताया गया था, कि याहवेह परमेश्वर ने अपने सेवक मोशेह को आदेश दिया था कि यह पूरा देश आपको दिया जाएगा, और आप इन निवासियों को मार दें. इसलिये अपने आपको बचाने के लिए हमें ऐसा करना पड़ा.

25 And now, behold, we are in thy hand; as it seemeth good and right in thy eyes to do unto us, so do.

अब देखिए, हम आपके ही हाथों में हैं. हमारे साथ आप वही कीजिए, जो आपको सही और अच्छा लगे.”

26 And he did unto them thus; and he delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, and they slew them not.

तब यहोशू ने गिबियोनियों को बचाया और उनकी हत्या नहीं की.

27 And Joshua appointed them on that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the Lord, even unto this day, for the place which he should choose.

किंतु यहोशू ने उसी दिन सोच लिया था कि वे अब से इस्राएली सभा के लिए तथा याहवेह द्वारा बताये जगह पर उनकी वेदी के लिए लकड़ी काटेंगे तथा उनके लिए पानी भरा करेंगे.
