Joshua 9
1 And it came to pass, when all the kings that were on this side of the Jordan, in the mountain, and in the lowlands, and in all the coast of the great sea opposite Lebanon, the Hittites, and the Emorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, heard this,
Ces événements appris, tous les rois d’au-delà du Jourdain, qui demeuraient dans les montagnes, dans les plaines, dans les lieux maritimes et sur le rivage de la grande mer; ceux aussi qui habitaient près du Liban, l’Héthéen, et l’Amorrhéen, le Chananéen, le Phérézéen, l’Hévéen et le Jébuséen,
2 That they assembled themselves all together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
Se réunirent tous ensemble pour combattre contre Josué et Israël, d’un même cœur et d’un même esprit.
3 And when the inhabitants of Gib'on heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and unto 'Ai,
Mais ceux qui habitaient à Gabaon, apprenant tout ce qu’avait fait Josué à Jéricho et à Haï,
4 They also did work wilily, and went and feigned to be messengers, and took old sacks for their asses, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
Et imaginant une ruse, prirent avec eux des vivres, mettant de vieux sacs sur leurs ânes et des outres de vin rompues et recousues,
5 And [put] old and patched-up shoes upon their feet, and old garments upon themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.
Et des chaussures très vieilles, et qui, pour preuve de leur vétusté, étaient couvertes de pièces; ils étaient eux-mêmes vêtus de vieux habits: les pains aussi qu’ils portaient pour provisions de voyage, étaient durs et brisés en morceaux.
6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We are come from a far-off country; and now make ye a covenant with us.
C’est ainsi qu’ils vinrent vers Josué, qui alors se trouvait au camp de Galgala, et qu’ils lui dirent et en même temps à tout Israël: Nous sommes venus d’une terre lointaine, désirant faire la paix avec vous. Et les hommes d’Israël leur répondirent et dirent:
7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell in the midst of us; and how can we make a covenant with you:
Peut-être que vous habitez dans la terre qui nous est due par le sort, et que nous ne pouvons faire alliance avec vous.
8 And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and whence come ye!
Mais eux à Josué: Nous sommes vos serviteurs, dirent-ils. Et Josué leur demanda: Qui êtes-vous? Et d’où venez-vous?
9 And they said unto him, From a very far-off country are thy servants come, because of the name of the Lord thy God; for we have heard his fame, and all that he hath done in Egypt;
Ils répondirent: C’est d’une terre très lointaine que sont venus vos serviteurs, au nom du Seigneur ton Dieu; car nous avons appris la renommée de sa puissance, tout ce qu’il a fait en Egypte,
10 And all that he hath done to the two kings of the Emorites, that were beyond the Jordan, to Sichon the king of Cheshbon, and to 'Og the king of Bashan, who was at 'Ashtaroth.
Et aux deux rois des Amorrhéens, qui étaient au-delà du Jourdain, Séhon, roi d’Hésébon, et Og, roi de Basan, qui était à Astaroth.
11 Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, as followeth, Take provisions with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, Your servants are we: and now make ye with us a covenant.
Et les anciens et tous les habitants de notre terre nous ont dit: Prenez en vos mains des provisions pour ce très long voyage, et allez au-devant d’eux, et dites: Nous sommes vos serviteurs, faites alliance avec nous.
12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; and now, behold, it is dry, and it is become mouldy:
Voyez ces pains, quand nous sommes sortis de nos maisons, pour venir vers vous, nous les avons pris chauds; maintenant ils sont devenus secs et réduits en poudre par une excessive vétusté.
13 And these wine-bottles, which we filled, when new, — but behold, they are now become rent; and these our garments and our shoes are become worn out by reason of the very long journey.
Et ces outres de vin, nous les avons remplies neuves, maintenant elles sont rompues et décousues; et les vêtements que nous portons, et les chaussures que nous avons aux pieds, sont usés à cause de la longueur d’un trop long chemin, et presque entièrement détruits.
14 And the men took of their provisions, but the decision of the Lord they did not ask.
Ils prirent donc de leurs vivres et ils n’interrogèrent point l’oracle du Seigneur.
15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the princes of the congregation swore unto them.
Et Josué fit la paix avec eux, et, l’alliance contractée, il promit qu’ils ne seraient pas tués: les princes de la multitude aussi le leur jurèrent.
16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt in the midst of them.
Mais après trois jours de l’alliance faite, ils apprirent qu’ils habitaient dans le voisinage, et qu’ils allaient se trouver au milieu d’eux.
17 And the children of Israel broke up, and came unto their cities on the third day; and their cities were Gib'on, and Kephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiryath-ye'arim.
Et les enfants d’Israël levèrent le camp, et ils arrivèrent le troisième jour dans leurs villes, dont les noms sont, Gabaon, Caphira, Béroth et Cariathiarim.
18 And the children of Israel smote them not; because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the Lord, the God of Israel; but all the congregation murmured against the princes.
Cependant ils ne les tuèrent point, parce que les princes de la multitude le leur avait juré au nom du Seigneur Dieu d’Israël. C’est pourquoi tout le peuple murmura contre les princes,
19 And all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the Lord the God of Israel: and now we cannot touch them.
Qui leur répondirent: Nous leur avons juré au nom du Seigneur Dieu d’Israël, et c’est pour cela que nous ne pouvons les toucher.
20 This will we do to them, and we will let them live, that there be no wrath upon us, on account of the oath which we have sworn unto them.
Seulement, voici ce que nous leur ferons: Qu’à la vérité ils soient conservés à la vie, de peur que la colère du Seigneur ne s’élève contre nous, si nous nous parjurons;
21 And the princes said unto them, Let them live: and they became hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation, as the princes had spoken unto them.
Mais qu’ils vivent de telle sorte qu’ils coupent du bois et qu’ils portent de l’eau pour l’usage de toute la multitude. Pendant que les princes disaient ces choses,
22 And Joshua called for them, and he spoke unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you: whereas ye dwell in the midst of us?
Josué appela les Gabaonites, et leur dit: Pourquoi avez-vous voulu nous surprendre par fraude, jusqu’à dire: Nous habitons fort loin de vous, tandis que vous êtes au milieu de nous?
23 And now be ye cursed, and there shall not cease to be of you servants and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.
C’est pourquoi vous serez sous la malédiction, et jamais il ne manquera quelqu’un de votre race pour couper du bois et porter de l’eau dans la maison de mon Dieu.
24 And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the Lord thy God had commanded his servant Moses to give unto you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; wherefore we were sore afraid for our lives because of you, and we have done this thing.
Ceux-ci répondirent: Il a été annoncé à vos serviteurs, que le Seigneur votre Dieu avait promis à Moïse, son serviteur, qu’il vous livrerait toute cette terre, et qu’il en détruirait tous les habitants. Nous avons donc beaucoup craint, et nous avons pourvu à notre vie, poussés par la terreur de votre nom, et nous avons formé ce dessein.
25 And now, behold, we are in thy hand; as it seemeth good and right in thy eyes to do unto us, so do.
Mais maintenant nous sommes en ta main, fais-nous ce qui te paraît bon et juste.
26 And he did unto them thus; and he delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, and they slew them not.
Josué fit donc comme il avait dit; et il les délivra de la main des enfants d’Israël, afin qu’ils ne fussent pas tués.
27 And Joshua appointed them on that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the Lord, even unto this day, for the place which he should choose.
Et en ce jour-là il déclara qu’ils étaient au service de tout le peuple et de l’autel du Seigneur, pour couper du bois et porter de l’eau dans le lieu que le Seigneur aurait choisi; ce qu’ils ont fait jusqu’au présent temps.
