Joshua 17
1 And then came the lot for the tribe of Menasseh; for he was the first-born of Joseph: to wit, for Machir the first-born of Menasseh, the father of Gil'ad; because he was a man of war, therefore he obtained Gil'ad and Bashan.
Il y eut encore une part échue par le sort pour la tribu de Manassé, car il était le premier-né de Joseph. Machir, premier-né de Manassé et père de Galaad, avait reçu Galaad et Basan, car il était homme de guerre.
2 There was also a lot for the rest of the children of Menasseh after their families; for the children of Abi'ezer, and for the children of Chelek, and for the children of Assriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Chepher, and for the children of Shemida': these were the male children of Menasseh the son of Joseph after their families.
Un lot fut aussi assigné aux autres fils de Manassé, selon leurs familles, aux fils d’Abiézer, aux fils de Hélec, aux fils d’Esriel, aux fils de Séchem, aux fils de Hépher et aux fils de Sémida; ce sont là les enfants mâles de Manassé, fils de Joseph, selon leurs familles.
3 But Zelophchad, the son of Chepher, the son of Gil'ad, the son of Machir, the son of Menasseh, had no sons, but only daughters, and these are the names of his daughters, Machlah, and No'ah, Choglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
Salphaad, fils de Hépher, fils de Galaad, fils de Machir, fils de Manassé, n’eut pas de fils, mais il eut des filles, et voici les noms de ses filles: Maala, Noa, Hégla, Melcha et Thersa.
4 And they came near before Elazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, The Lord commanded Moses to give unto us an inheritance among our brethren. And he gave them, according to the order of the Lord, an inheritance among the brethren of their father.
Elles se présentèrent devant Eléazar, le prêtre, devant Josué, fils de Nun, et devant les princes, en disant: « Yahweh a commandé à Moïse de nous donner un héritage parmi nos frères. » Et on leur donna, selon l’ordre de Yahweh, un héritage au milieu des frères de leur père.
5 And there fell ten portions of Menasseh, beside the lands of Gil'ad and Bashan, which were on the other side of the Jordan;
Il échut dix portions à Manassé, outre le pays de Galaad et de Basan, qui est de l’autre côté du Jourdain.
6 Because the daughters of Menasseh obtained an inheritance among his sons: and the land of Gil'ad belonged to the rest of the sons of Manasseh.
Car les filles de Manassé reçurent un héritage au milieu de ses fils: le pays de Galaad fut pour les autres fils de Manassé.
7 And the boundary of Menasseh was from Asher to Michmethath, that lieth before Shechem; and the boundary went along on the right hand unto the inhabitants of 'En-tappuach.
La limite de Manassé partait d’Aser vers Machméthath, qui est en face de Sichem, et la frontière allait à droite, vers les habitants d’En-Taphua.
8 To Menasseh belonged the land of Tappuach; but Tappuach on the borders of Menasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim;
Le territoire de Taphua échut à Manassé, mais Taphua sur la frontière de Manassé, était aux fils d’Ephraïm.
9 And the boundary descended unto the brook Kanah, southward of the brook; these cities belonging to Ephraim are in the midst of the cities of Menasseh; and the boundary of Menasseh was on the north side of the river, and its terminations were toward the sea:
La limite descendait au torrent de Cana, au midi du torrent; les villes de cette région, échues à Ephraïm, étaient au milieu des villes de Manassé; et la limite de Manassé était au nord du torrent et aboutissait à la mer.
10 Southward it was Ephraim's, and northward it was Menasseh's, and the sea was [there] his boundary; and on Asher they touched on the north, and on Issachar on the east.
Ainsi le pays au midi était à Ephraïm, et le pays au nord à Manassé, et la mer formait sa frontière. Vers le nord, ils touchaient à Aser, vers l’orient à Issachar.
11 And to Menasseh belonged in Issachar and in Asher Beth-shean and its towns, and Yible'am and its towns, together with the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of 'En-dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Ta'anach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns, namely the three districts.
Manassé obtint dans les territoires d’ Issachar et d’ Aser Bethsan et les villes de sa dépendance, Jéblaam et les villes de sa dépendance, les habitants de Dor et les villes de sa dépendance, les habitants d’Endor et les villes de sa dépendance, les habitants de Thénac et les villes de sa dépendance, les habitants de Mageddo et les villes de sa dépendance: c’est le district des trois Collines.
12 Yet the children of Menasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of these cities; but the Canaanites succeeded to dwell in this land;
Les fils de Manassé ne purent pas prendre possession de ces villes, et les Chananéens s’enhardirent à rester dans ce pays.
13 Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were become strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but they did not drive them out.
Lorsque les enfants d’Israël furent plus forts, ils soumirent les Chananéens à un tribut, mais ils ne les chassèrent pas.
14 And the children of Joseph spoke unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion as an inheritance, seeing I am a numerous people, to which extent the Lord hath hitherto blessed me?
Les fils de Joseph parlèrent à Josué, en disant: « Pourquoi ne m’as-tu donné en héritage qu’un seul lot, une seule part alors que je suis un peuple nombreux et que Yahweh a béni jusqu’à présent? »
15 And Joshua said unto them, If thou art a numerous people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down [a space] for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim, if the mountain of Ephraim be too narrow for thee.
Josué leur dit: « Si tu es un peuple nombreux, monte à la forêt, et là défriche-toi une place dans le pays des Phérézéens et des Rephaïm, puisque la montagne d’Ephraïm est trop étroite pour toi. »
16 And the children of Joseph said, The mountain will not be enough for us; and chariots of iron are belonging to all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley, to those who are at Beth-shean and its towns, and to those who are in the valley of Yizre'el.
Les fils de Joseph dirent: « La montagne ne nous suffit pas, et il y a des chariots de fer chez tous les Chananéens qui habitent le pays plat, chez ceux qui sont à Bethsan et dans les villes de sa dépendance, et chez ceux qui sont dans la vallée de Jezraël. »
17 And Joshua said unto the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and to Menasseh, as followeth, Thou art a numerous people, and hast great power; thou shalt not have one lot only;
Josué répondit à la maison de Joseph, Ephraïm et Manassé: « Tu es un peuple nombreux, et ta force est grande; tu n’auras pas seulement un lot.
18 But the mountain shall be thine; it is indeed a wood, yet thou canst cut it down; and the terminations of it shall be thine; for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, though they be strong.
Car la montagne t’appartiendra; c’est une forêt, tu la défricheras, et les issues en seront à toi; car tu chasseras les Chananéens, quoiqu’ils aient des chars de fer et qu’ils soient forts. »
