Jonah 1

1 The word of the Lord also came unto Jonah the son of 'Amitthai, saying,

Και έγεινε λόγος Κυρίου προς Ιωνάν τον υιόν του Αμαθί, λέγων,

2 Arise, Go unto Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim against her; for their wickedness is come up before me.

Σηκώθητι, ύπαγε εις Νινευή, την πόλιν την μεγάλην, και κήρυξον κατ' αυτής· διότι η ασέβεια αυτών ανέβη ενώπιόν μου.

3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tharshish from the presence of the Lord; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tharshish, and paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tharshish, from the presence of the Lord.

Και εσηκώθη ο Ιωνάς διά να φύγη εις Θαρσείς από προσώπου Κυρίου και κατέβη εις Ιόππην· και εύρηκε πλοίον πορευόμενον εις Θαρσείς, και έδωκε τον ναύλον αυτού και επέβη εις αυτό, διά να υπάγη μετ' αυτών εις Θαρσείς από προσώπου Κυρίου.

4 But the Lord excited a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea; and it was thought that the ship would be broken in pieces.

Αλλ' ο Κύριος εξήγειρεν άνεμον μέγαν επί την θάλασσαν, και έγεινε κλύδων μέγας εν τη θαλάσση και το πλοίον εκινδύνευε να συντριφθή.

5 And the mariners were afraid, and called every man unto his god; and they cast forth the articles which were in the ship into the sea, to be lightened of them. But Jonah was gone down into the hold of the ship, and lay down, and was fast asleep.

Και εφοβήθησαν οι ναύται και ανεβόησαν έκαστος προς τον θεόν αυτού και έκαμον εκβολήν των εν τω πλοίω σκευών εις την θάλασσαν, διά να ελαφρωθή απ' αυτών· ο δε Ιωνάς κατέβη εις το κοίλωμα του πλοίου και επλαγίασε και εκοιμάτο βαθέως.

6 So the ship-master came near unto him, and said unto him, Why dost thou sleep? arise, call upon thy God: perhaps it be that God will think of us, that we may not be lost.

Και επλησίασε προς αυτόν ο πλοίαρχος και είπε προς αυτόν, Τι κοιμάσαι συ; σηκώθητι, επικαλού τον Θεόν σου, ίσως ο Θεός μας ενθυμηθή και δεν χαθώμεν.

7 And they said one to the other, Come, and let us cast lots; that we may know for whose cause this evil hath happened unto us. And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

Και είπον έκαστος προς τον πλησίον αυτού, Έλθετε και ας ρίψωμεν κλήρους, διά να γνωρίσωμεν τίνος ένεκεν το κακόν τούτο είναι εφ' ημάς. Και έρριψαν κλήρους και έπεσεν ο κλήρος επί τον Ιωνάν.

8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, thou for whose cause this evil hath happened unto us, What is thy business? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

Τότε είπον προς αυτόν, Ειπέ τώρα προς ημάς, τίνος ένεκεν το κακόν τούτο ήλθεν εφ' ημάς; Τι είναι το έργον σου; και πόθεν έρχεσαι; τις ο τόπος σου; και εκ τίνος λαού είσαι;

9 And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who hath made the sea and the dry land.

Ο δε είπε προς αυτούς, Εγώ είμαι Εβραίος· και σέβομαι Κύριον τον Θεόν του ουρανού, όστις εποίησε την θαλάσσαν και την ξηράν.

10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid and they said unto him, What is this thou hast done? for the men knew that he was flying from the presence of the Lord; because he had told them.

Τότε εφοβήθησαν οι άνθρωποι φόβον μέγαν και είπον προς αυτόν, Τι είναι τούτο, το οποίον έκαμες; διότι εγνώρισαν οι άνθρωποι, ότι έφευγεν από προσώπου Κυρίου, επειδή είχεν αναγγείλει τούτο προς αυτούς.

11 And they said unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may become calm around us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.

Και είπον προς αυτόν, Τι να σε κάμωμεν, διά να ησυχάση η θάλασσα αφ' ημών; διότι η θάλασσα εκλυδωνίζετο επί το μάλλον.

12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea: so shall the sea be calm around you; for I know well that because of me is this great tempest upon you.

Και είπε προς αυτούς, Σηκώσατέ με και ρίψατέ με εις την θάλασσαν, και η θάλασσα θέλει ησυχάσει αφ' υμών· διότι εγώ γνωρίζω, ότι εξ αιτίας εμού έγεινεν ο μέγας ούτος κλύδων εφ' υμάς.

13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring [the ship] back to the land; but they could not; for the sea grew more and more tempestuous around them.

Οι άνθρωποι όμως εκωπηλάτουν δυνατά διά να επιστρέψωσι προς την ξηράν· αλλά δεν εδύναντο, διότι η θάλασσα εκλυδωνίζετο επί το μάλλον κατ' αυτών.

14 And they called unto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, let us not be lost, we pray thee, for the life of this man, and lay not upon us [the guilt of] innocent blood; for thou art the Lord, as it pleaseth thee so dost thou do.

Όθεν ανεβόησαν προς τον Κύριον και είπον, Δεόμεθα, Κύριε, δεόμεθα, ας μη χαθώμεν διά την ζωήν του ανθρώπου τούτου και μη επιβάλης εφ' ημάς αίμα αθώον· διότι συ, Κύριε, έκαμες ως ήθελες.

15 And they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from its raging.

Και εσήκωσαν τον Ιωνάν και έρριψαν αυτόν εις την θάλασσαν και η θάλασσα εστάθη από του θυμού αυτής.

16 And the men feared the Lord very greatly; and they offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made vows.

Τότε οι άνθρωποι εφοβήθησαν τον Κύριον φόβον μέγαν και προσέφεραν θυσίαν εις τον Κύριον και έκαμον ευχάς.

17 And the Lord made ready a large fish to swallow up Jonah: and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Και διέταξε Κύριος μέγα κήτος να καταπίη τον Ιωνάν. Και ήτο ο Ιωνάς εν τη κοιλία του κήτους τρεις ημέρας και τρεις νύκτας.
