Jonah 1
1 The word of the Lord also came unto Jonah the son of 'Amitthai, saying,
Or la parole de Yahvé fut adressée à Jonas, fils d'Amittaï, en ces termes:
2 Arise, Go unto Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim against her; for their wickedness is come up before me.
« Lève-toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville, et prêche contre elle, car leur méchanceté est montée devant moi. »
3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tharshish from the presence of the Lord; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tharshish, and paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tharshish, from the presence of the Lord.
Mais Jonas se leva pour fuir vers Tarsis, loin de la présence de Yahvé. Il descendit à Joppé, et trouva un navire qui allait à Tarsis; il paya le prix du navire, et y descendit, pour aller avec eux à Tarsis, loin de la présence de Yahvé.
4 But the Lord excited a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea; and it was thought that the ship would be broken in pieces.
Mais Yahvé fit souffler un grand vent sur la mer, et il y eut une grande tempête sur la mer, de sorte que le navire risquait de se briser.
5 And the mariners were afraid, and called every man unto his god; and they cast forth the articles which were in the ship into the sea, to be lightened of them. But Jonah was gone down into the hold of the ship, and lay down, and was fast asleep.
Alors les marins eurent peur, et chacun cria à son dieu. Ils jetèrent à la mer la cargaison qui se trouvait dans le navire pour alléger le navire. Mais Jonas était descendu dans les profondeurs du navire, il était couché et dormait profondément.
6 So the ship-master came near unto him, and said unto him, Why dost thou sleep? arise, call upon thy God: perhaps it be that God will think of us, that we may not be lost.
Alors le capitaine du navire s'approcha de lui et lui dit: « Que veux-tu dire, dormeur? Lève-toi, invoque ton Dieu! Peut-être ton Dieu nous remarquera-t-il, afin que nous ne périssions pas. »
7 And they said one to the other, Come, and let us cast lots; that we may know for whose cause this evil hath happened unto us. And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
Ils se dirent tous les uns aux autres: « Venez! Tirons au sort, afin de savoir qui est responsable de ce mal qui nous frappe. » Ils tirèrent donc au sort, et le sort tomba sur Jonas.
8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, thou for whose cause this evil hath happened unto us, What is thy business? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
Ils lui demandèrent alors: « Dis-nous, je t'en prie, à cause de qui ce malheur est sur nous. Quelle est ta profession? D'où viens-tu? Quel est ton pays? De quel peuple es-tu? »
9 And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who hath made the sea and the dry land.
Il leur dit: « Je suis hébreu et je crains Yahvé, le Dieu des cieux, qui a fait la mer et la terre sèche. »
10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid and they said unto him, What is this thou hast done? for the men knew that he was flying from the presence of the Lord; because he had told them.
Alors les hommes eurent une grande peur et lui dirent: « Qu'as-tu fait? » Car les hommes savaient qu'il fuyait la présence de Yahvé, parce qu'il le leur avait dit.
11 And they said unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may become calm around us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.
Et ils lui dirent: « Que te ferons-nous, pour que la mer se calme à nos yeux? » Car la mer devenait de plus en plus houleuse.
12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea: so shall the sea be calm around you; for I know well that because of me is this great tempest upon you.
Il leur dit: « Prenez-moi, et jetez-moi dans la mer. Alors la mer se calmera pour vous, car je sais que c'est à cause de moi que cette grande tempête est sur vous. »
13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring [the ship] back to the land; but they could not; for the sea grew more and more tempestuous around them.
Les hommes ramaient avec force pour les ramener à terre, mais ils ne pouvaient pas, car la mer devenait de plus en plus agitée contre eux.
14 And they called unto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, let us not be lost, we pray thee, for the life of this man, and lay not upon us [the guilt of] innocent blood; for thou art the Lord, as it pleaseth thee so dost thou do.
Alors ils crièrent à Yahvé et dirent: « Nous te supplions, Yahvé, nous te supplions de ne pas nous laisser mourir pour la vie de cet homme, et de ne pas faire retomber sur nous le sang innocent; car toi, Yahvé, tu as fait ce qui t'a plu. »
15 And they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from its raging.
Ils prirent donc Jonas et le jetèrent dans la mer, et la mer cessa de se déchaîner.
16 And the men feared the Lord very greatly; and they offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made vows.
Les hommes eurent une grande crainte de l'Éternel, et ils offrirent un sacrifice à l'Éternel et firent des vœux.
17 And the Lord made ready a large fish to swallow up Jonah: and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Yahvé prépara un énorme poisson pour engloutir Jonas, et Jonas resta dans le ventre du poisson trois jours et trois nuits.
