Jonah 3
1 And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
Et la parole de l'Éternel fut adressée pour la seconde fois à Jonas en ces mots:
2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim unto it the proclamation which I shall speak unto thee.
Lève-toi, va à Ninive la grande ville, et proclames-y la proclamation que je vais te dire.
3 And Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was a great city before God, a three days' journey.
Alors Jonas se leva et alla à Ninive, selon la parole de l'Éternel. Or Ninive était une grande ville devant Dieu, ayant trois jours de marche.
4 And Jonah began to go through the city one day's journey, and he called out, and said, Yet forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
Et Jonas commença à faire dans la ville une journée de marche, et fit la proclamation en ces mots: Encore quarante jours et Ninive est détruite.
5 And the men of Nineveh believed in God; and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.
Et les gens de Ninive crurent Dieu, et ils publièrent un jeûne, et ils se revêtirent tous du cilice et les grands et les petits.
6 For when the matter was come unto the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, and put off his mantle from him, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat down on ashes.
Et lorsque le bruit en parvint au roi de Ninive, il se leva de son trône et déposa son manteau, et se couvrit du cilice, et s'assit sur la cendre.
7 And he caused to be proclaimed and he published through Nineveh, By the decree of the king and his chief men, it is said, Neither man nor beast, neither herds nor flocks, shall taste any thing; they shall not feed, nor drink water;
Et il fit crier et dire dans Ninive, de par le roi et ses grands, ces paroles: Que les hommes et les animaux, le bétail et les troupeaux ne goûtent de rien, ne paissent point et ne boivent point d'eau!
8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let [men] call unto God with might; and let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence which is in their hands.
et que les hommes et les bestiaux soient recouverts du cilice! que l'on crie à Dieu avec force! et que chacun revienne de sa mauvaise voie et de l'injustice de ses mains!
9 Who knoweth, but God may turn and bethink himself, and turn away from the fierceness of his anger, that we perish not?
Qui sait? Dieu se repentira de nouveau! Il reviendra de l'ardeur de sa colère, et nous ne périrons pas.
10 And God saw their works, that they had turned from their evil way: and God bethought himself of the evil, which he had spoken that he would do unto them, and he did it not.
Et Dieu voyant qu'ils en agissaient ainsi et qu'ils revenaient de leur mauvaise voie, Dieu se repentit du mal qu'il avait parlé de leur faire, et Il ne le leur fit pas.
