Jonah 1
1 The word of the Lord also came unto Jonah the son of 'Amitthai, saying,
La parole de Yahweh fut [adressée] à Jonas, fils d’Amathi, en ces termes:
2 Arise, Go unto Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim against her; for their wickedness is come up before me.
« Lève-toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville, et prêche contre elle; car leur méchanceté est montée jusqu’à moi. »
3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tharshish from the presence of the Lord; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tharshish, and paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tharshish, from the presence of the Lord.
Et Jonas se leva pour s’enfuir à Tharsis, [loin]de la face de Yahweh. Il descendit à Joppé, et trouva un vaisseau qui allait à Tharsis et, ayant payé son passage, il y descendit pour aller avec eux à Tharsis, loin de la face de Yahweh.
4 But the Lord excited a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea; and it was thought that the ship would be broken in pieces.
Mais Yahweh fit souffler un grand vent sur la mer, et il y eut sur la mer une grande tempête; le vaisseau menaçait de se briser.
5 And the mariners were afraid, and called every man unto his god; and they cast forth the articles which were in the ship into the sea, to be lightened of them. But Jonah was gone down into the hold of the ship, and lay down, and was fast asleep.
Les mariniers eurent peur; ils crièrent chacun à leur dieu, et jetèrent à la mer les objets qui étaient sur le vaisseau, pour s’alléger. Et Jonas était descendu au fond du navire; il s’était couché et dormait profondément.
6 So the ship-master came near unto him, and said unto him, Why dost thou sleep? arise, call upon thy God: perhaps it be that God will think of us, that we may not be lost.
Alors le chef de l’équipage s’approcha de lui et lui dit: « Qu’as-tu à dormir? Lève-toi, invoque ton Dieu; peut-être Dieu pensera-t-il à nous, et nous ne périrons pas! »
7 And they said one to the other, Come, and let us cast lots; that we may know for whose cause this evil hath happened unto us. And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
Et ils se dirent les uns aux autres: « Venez, jetons les sorts, afin que nous sachions de qui nous [vient] ce mal. » Ils jetèrent les sorts, et le sort tomba sur Jonas.
8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, thou for whose cause this evil hath happened unto us, What is thy business? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
Alors ils lui dirent: « Dis-nous donc à cause de qui nous arrive ce mal; quelle est ta profession, d’où viens-tu, quel est ton pays et de quel peuple es-tu?
9 And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who hath made the sea and the dry land.
Il leur répondit: « Je suis un Hébreu et j’adore Yahweh, le Dieu du ciel, qui a fait la mer et la terre. »
10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid and they said unto him, What is this thou hast done? for the men knew that he was flying from the presence of the Lord; because he had told them.
Les hommes furent saisis d’une grande crainte, et ils lui dirent: « Qu’as-tu fait! » Car les hommes savaient qu’il s’enfuyait [loin]de la face de Yahweh, parce qu’il [le] leur avait déclaré.
11 And they said unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may become calm around us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.
Ils lui dirent: « Que te ferons-nous, pour que la mer s’apaise pour nous? » Car la mer continuait de se soulever de plus en plus.
12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea: so shall the sea be calm around you; for I know well that because of me is this great tempest upon you.
Il leur répondit: « Prenez-moi et me jetez à la mer, et la mer s’apaisera pour vous; car je sais que c’est à cause de moi que cette grande tempête est venue sur vous. »
13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring [the ship] back to the land; but they could not; for the sea grew more and more tempestuous around them.
Les hommes ramaient pour ramener le vaisseau à la terre, mais ils ne le purent pas; car la mer continuait de se soulever de plus en plus contre eux.
14 And they called unto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, let us not be lost, we pray thee, for the life of this man, and lay not upon us [the guilt of] innocent blood; for thou art the Lord, as it pleaseth thee so dost thou do.
Alors ils crièrent à Yahweh et dirent: « Ah! Yahweh, que nous ne périssions pas pour l’âme de cet homme, et ne nous chargez pas d’un sang innocent; car c’est toi, Yahweh, qui as fait comme il t’a plu. »
15 And they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from its raging.
Et prenant Jonas, ils le jetèrent à la mer; et la mer calma sa fureur.
16 And the men feared the Lord very greatly; and they offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made vows.
Et les hommes furent saisis d’une grande crainte pour Yahweh; ils offrirent un sacrifice à Yahweh et firent des vœux.
17 And the Lord made ready a large fish to swallow up Jonah: and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Et Yahweh fit venir un grand poisson pour engloutir Jonas; et Jonas fut dans les entrailles du poisson trois jours et trois nuits.
