Job 4
1 Then answered Eliphaz the Themanite, and said,
Alors Éliphaz, le Thémanite, prit la parole,
2 If we essay to address a word to thee, wilt thou be wearied? yet who is able to refrain from speaking?
« Si quelqu'un s'aventure à parler avec toi, seras-tu affligé? Mais qui peut se retenir de parler?
3 Behold, thou hast [ere this] corrected many, and weak hands thou wast wont to strengthen.
Voici, vous avez instruit beaucoup de gens, vous avez renforcé les mains faibles.
4 Him that stumbled thy words used to uphold, and to sinking knees thou gavest vigor.
Tes paroles ont soutenu celui qui tombait, tu as raffermi les genoux faibles.
5 Yet now, when it cometh to thee, thou art wearied: it toucheth even thee, and thou art terrified.
Mais maintenant, cela t'est arrivé, et tu t'es évanoui. Il vous touche, et vous êtes troublé.
6 Is not then thy fear of God still thy confidence, thy hope equal to the integrity of thy ways?
Votre piété n'est-elle pas votre confiance? L'intégrité de vos voies n'est-elle pas votre espoir?
7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous destroyed?
« Souviens-toi maintenant de celui qui a péri, étant innocent? Ou bien où ont été coupés les montants?
8 Even as I have seen, that those who plough wrong-doing, and sow trouble, have to reap the same.
Selon ce que j'ai vu, ceux qui labourent l'iniquité qui sèment le trouble, récoltent la même chose.
9 Before the breathing of God they perish, and before the breath of his nostrils they come to their end.
Par le souffle de Dieu, ils périssent. Ils sont consumés par le souffle de sa colère.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
Le rugissement du lion, et la voix du lion féroce, les dents des jeunes lions, sont cassées.
11 The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness have to scatter themselves abroad.
Le vieux lion périt par manque de proie. Les petits de la lionne sont dispersés.
12 But to me a word came by stealth, and my ear took in a scarcely perceptible whisper thereof.
« Or, une chose m'a été rapportée en secret. Mon oreille en a reçu un murmure.
13 In intense thoughts out of visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men:
Dans les pensées des visions de la nuit, quand le sommeil profond tombe sur les hommes,
14 Dread came over me, with trembling, and it caused all my bones to shudder.
La peur m'a saisi, et le tremblement, qui a fait trembler tous mes os.
15 Then flitted a spirit past before my face; the hair of my body stood up:
Alors un esprit passa devant ma face. Les poils de ma chair se sont dressés.
16 It stood still, but I could not recognize its form; a figure was before my eyes, a slight whisper, then a [louder] voice I heard, saying,
Elle était immobile, mais je ne pouvais pas discerner son apparence. Une forme était devant mes yeux. Silence, puis j'ai entendu une voix, disant,
17 Can a mortal be more righteous than God? or can a man be more pure than his Maker?
« Un homme mortel serait-il plus juste que Dieu? Un homme peut-il être plus pur que son créateur?
18 Behold, in his servants he putteth no trust, and his angels he chargeth with folly:
Voici, il ne fait pas confiance à ses serviteurs. Il charge ses anges d'erreurs.
19 How much less in those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed till they come to be eaten by the moth?
Combien plus ceux qui habitent des maisons d'argile, dont les fondations sont dans la poussière, qui sont écrasés par la mite!
20 From morning to evening are they broken to pieces: without laying it [to heart] they perish for ever.
Entre le matin et le soir, ils sont détruits. Ils périssent à jamais sans que personne ne s'en aperçoive.
21 Behold, their excellency which is in them is torn away: they die, and this without wisdom.
Leur corde de tente n'est-elle pas arrachée en eux? Ils meurent, et cela sans sagesse.
