Job 37
1 At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved upward out of its place.
C’Est aussi ce qui jette la frayeur dans mon cœur et le fait vivement tressauter.
2 Hear, O hear, the rattling of his thunder, and the storm's roar that goeth out of his mouth.
Ecoutez attentivement le grondement de sa voix et le roulement qui sort de sa bouche.
3 Under the whole heavens he letteth it loose, and his lightning over the ends of the earth.
Il le prolonge sous toute la voûte des cieux, et ses éclairs brillent jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre.
4 Behind it roareth the thunder; he thundereth with his majestic voice; and he holdeth them not back when his voice is heard.
A leur suite, c’est un bruit qui rugit: il tonne de sa voix majestueuse, et quand cette voix se fait entendre, il ne les retient plus.
5 God thundereth with his marvelous voice: he doth great things, which we cannot comprehend.
Dieu fait retentir merveilleusement la voix de son tonnerre; il accomplit de grandes choses qui dépassent notre connaissance.
6 For to the snow he saith, Be thou on the earth: likewise the pouring rain, and to the pouring rains of his strength.
Car il dit à la neige: "Apparais sur la terre!" II envoie la pluie abondante, ses puissantes averses.
7 He sealeth it on the hand of every man, that all men whom he hath made may know it.
Alors il paralyse les bras de tous les hommes, afin que ces hommes, son œuvre à lui, apprennent à le connaître.
8 Then retire the beasts into [their] dens, and rest in their lairs.
Et les fauves rentrent dans leur tanière et se terrent dans leur gîte.
9 Out of [his] chamber cometh the whirlwind, and out of the north, the cold.
L’Ouragan surgit de ses retraites, le froid est amené par les vents d’aquilon.
10 From the breathing of God ice is given, and the broad waters become solid.
Au souffle de Dieu se forme la glace et se contractent les nappes d’eau.
11 Also with moisture he loadeth the cloud; [and] he scattereth the cloud of his lightning;
Il charge aussi la nue de vapeurs humides, dissémine ses nuages que traversent les éclairs.
12 And it is turned round about by his guidance, to execute what he commandeth it upon the face of the world, the earth.
Et ces nuages se déplacent en tourbillonnant sous son impulsion, en vue de leur besogne, pour exécuter ses ordres sur la surface du globe terrestre.
13 Whether it be as a chastising rod—if this be destined for his earth—or for kindness, doth he cause it to come.
Il les suscite tantôt comme un fléau pour la terre, tantôt comme une source de bienfaits.
14 Give ear unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider well the wonders of God.
Ecoute, Job, tout ceci; lève-toi et considère les merveilles de Dieu.
15 Dost thou know how God hath imposed [a law] on them, and [how] he hath caused the light of his cloud to shine?
Comprends-tu les lois qu’il leur impose et comment il fait briller ses nuages lumineux?
16 Dost thou know aught about the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge?
Comprends-tu les déploiements de la nuée, les prodiges de Celui qui possède la science parfaite?
17 [Thou] who clothest thyself with warm garments, when He giveth the earth rest from the south wind?
Toi, dont les vêtements deviennent trop chauds, dès que la terre recouvre le calme sous l’influence du midi,
18 Hast thou with him spread out the skies, which are strong even as a molten mirror?
pourrais-tu lui aider à étendre les cieux, solides comme un miroir de métal?
19 Let us know what we shall say unto him: we cannot set aught in order [before him] because of darkness.
Apprends-moi ce que nous pourrions lui dire: dans les ténèbres où nous sommes, nous manquons d’arguments.
20 Can [all] be related of him, when I speak [ever so much]? or if a man talk [of him] even till he be swallowed up [in death]?
Devra-t-on lui rendre compte quand je parle? Jamais homme a-t-il demandé à être anéanti?
21 Yet now men see not the light which is bright in the skies, when the wind hath passed along, and purified them.
Or donc, personne ne peut regarder le soleil qui brille radieux dans le ciel, lorsque le vent qui passe l’a nettoyé.
22 The golden [light] that cometh out of the north: around God is terrible majesty.
Si l’or vient du septentrion, Dieu, lui, demeure couvert d’une redoutable majesté.
23 The Almighty, whom we cannot find out, excellent in power, and in justice, and abounding in righteousness, will not afflict:
Le Tout-Puissant, nous ne pouvons l’atteindre, lui qui est grand par la force; mais le droit et la parfaite justice, il ne les écrase point!
24 Therefore do men fear him; he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.
C’Est pourquoi les hommes le révèrent; quant à lui, il n’abaisse ses regards sur aucun des prétendus sages.
