Job 36
1 Then continued Elihu, and said,
Vierde rede: mag de mens God ter verantwoording roepen? Elihoe vervolgde, en sprak:
2 Wait for me a little, and I will instruct thee; for [I have] still some words on God's behalf.
Heb nog een weinig geduld, en ik zal u onderrichten, Want er valt nog genoeg ten gunste van de Godheid te zeggen;
3 I will lift up my knowledge for him who is afar, and for my Maker will I obtain righteousness.
Ik wil mijn kennis tot het uiterste voeren, Om mijn Schepper te rechtvaardigen.
4 For truly no falsehood is [in] my words: one that is upright in [his] opinions [dealeth now] with thee.
Neen, mijn woorden liegen niet: Ge hebt met iemand te doen, die het eerlijk meent.
5 Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength of intellect.
Ja, God is groot: Hij veracht den rechtschapene niet;
6 He permitteth not the wicked to live; but he procureth justice for the afflicted.
Machtig: Hij laat den boze niet leven! Hij verschaft aan de verdrukten hun recht,
7 He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous; but [he placeth them] with kings on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted.
Van de rechtvaardigen wendt Hij zijn ogen niet af; Hij zet ze bij koningen op de troon, Hoog plaatst Hij hun zetel voor eeuwig!
8 And if they be bound in fetters, and if they be entangled in the cords of affliction:
Maar worden zij in boeien geklonken, In koorden van ellende gevangen,
9 Then doth he tell them of their work, and of their transgressions, when they had become strong.
Dan brengt Hij hun daardoor hun gedrag onder het oog, En hun zonden uit hoogmoed ontstaan;
10 And he openeth thus their ear to correction, and saith that they should return from wrong-doing.
Zo opent Hij hun oor ter belering, En vermaant ze, zich van hun ongerechtigheid te bekeren.
11 If they hearken and serve [him], they will spend their days in happiness, and their years in pleasures.
Wanneer ze dan luisteren, en Hem weer dienen, Dan slijten ze hun dagen in geluk, Hun jaren in weelde;
12 But if they hearken not, they will pass away through the sword, and they will perish in want of knowledge.
Maar wanneer ze niet willen horen, Dan gaan ze heen naar het graf, En komen om door onverstand.
13 But the hypocrites in heart persevere in wrath; they will not offer entreaty when he bindeth them:
En de verstokten, die er toornig om worden, En niet smeken, als Hij ze bindt:
14 Their soul will die in youth, and their life, among the incestuous.
Zij sterven al in hun jeugd, Hun leven vliedt heen in de jonge jaren.
15 He delivereth the afflicted through his affliction, and openeth through oppression his ear.
Hij redt dus den ellendige door zijn ellende, En opent zijn oor door zijn nood!
16 And also thee hath he incited away from the jaws of distress into a wide space, on the site of which there is no straitness; and what is set on thy table is full of fatness.
Zo trekt Hij ook u uit de muil van ellende Inplaats daarvan zal het onbekrompen overvloed zijn, En het genot van een dis, met vette spijzen beladen.
17 But if thou art full of the judgment of the wicked: [divine] judgment and decree will support each other.
Maar oordeelt gij geheel als een boze zijn gericht zal u treffen,
18 For there would be fury, If aught were to incite thee to utter an abundance [of rebellious words]; and the greatness of the infliction must not mislead thee.
Pas dus op, dat de wrevel u geen straf komt brengen, Waarvan de grootste losprijs u niet zou ontslaan;
19 Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold ore, nor all the highest forces of strength.
Uw smeken tot Hem in de nood niets bereiken Al doet ge het ook uit al uw kracht.
20 Desire then not eagerly the night, when nations pass away in their place.
Laat de dwaasheid u toch niet bedriegen Om u te verheffen met hen, die wijs willen zijn;
21 Take heed, turn not thyself to wrong-doing, so that thou wouldst choose this because of [thy] affliction.
Wacht u ervoor, u tot de zonde te wenden, Want hierdoor juist werdt gij door ellende bezocht!
22 Behold, God is exalted by his power: who is an instructer like him?
Zie, God is groot door zijn kracht: Wie is heerser als Hij?
23 Who hath given him a charge concerning his way? or who hath ever said, Thou hast acted unjustly?
Wie schrijft Hem zijn weg voor, Wie zegt: Gij handelt verkeerd?
24 Reflect, that thou shouldst magnify his work, which [other] men have beheld.
Denk er aan, dat ook gij zijn daden verheft, Die de stervelingen moeten bezingen,
25 All men have looked at it [with astonishment]; the mortal gazeth at it from afar.
Die iedere mens moet overwegen, Ieder mensenkind van verre beschouwt.
26 Behold, God is great, and we comprehend him not, the number of his years can truly not be searched out.
Zie, God is groot: wij begrijpen Hem niet, Het getal van zijn jaren is zelfs niet te schatten!
27 For he taketh away drops of water, which are purified into rain in his mist:
Hij trekt uit de zee de druppels omhoog, Vervluchtigt de regen tot zijn nevel,
28 These drop down out of the skies; they distil upon the multitude of men.
Die de wolken naar beneden doet stromen, En op alle mensen doet storten;
29 But [what man] can understand the outspreadings of the clouds? the tumult of his tabernacle?
Wie begrijpt de sprei van de wolken En de gedaante van zijn tent?
30 Behold, he spreadeth out over it his light, and covereth up the roots of the sea.
Zie, Hij spreidt zijn nevel uit over de zee, En houdt haar kolken bedekt.
31 For by means of them he judgeth nations, he giveth food in superfluity.
Want daarmee spijst Hij de volken En geeft Hij voedsel in overvloed.
32 [His] hands he covereth with light; and he commandeth it to strike the one who striveth against him.
In zijn handen verbergt Hij de bliksem, En zendt hem af op zijn doel;
33 The noise of his storm telleth of it, yea, the cattle also, of the rising tempest.
Zijn strijdkreet kondigt Hem aan, Zijn woede ontketent de storm!
