Job 35

1 Then commenced Elihu, and said,

Elihu hob dann wieder an und sagte:

2 Dost thou deem this to be just, that thou hast said, “My righteousness is more than God's?”

»Hältst du das für recht, nennst du das ›meine Gerechtigkeit vor Gott‹,

3 For thou sayest, “What benefit will it be unto thee? what more profit shall I have, than if I had sinned?”

daß du fragst: ›Was nützt sie mir?‹ und: ›Was habe ich mehr davon, als wenn ich sündigte?‹

4 I will truly reply unto thee with words, and unto thy friends with thee.

Ich will dir darauf die Antwort geben, dir und zugleich deinen Freunden neben dir.

5 Look unto the heavens, and see; and gaze on the skies which are higher than thou.

Blicke zum Himmel empor und sieh ihn an und schaue zu den Wolken hinauf, die hoch über dir sind:

6 If thou sin, what dost thou effect against him? and if thy transgressions be multiplied, what canst thou do unto him?

wenn du sündigst, was tust du ihm damit zuleide? Und sind deine Übertretungen zahlreich, welchen Schaden fügst du ihm damit zu?

7 If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what doth he accept out of thy hand?

Und so auch: wenn du gerecht bist, welches Geschenk machst du ihm damit, oder was empfängt er aus deiner Hand?

8 A man like thyself thy wickedness may reach, and a son of earth thy righteousness.

Nur den Menschen, wie du einer bist, geht dein Freveln an, und nur dir, dem Menschensohn, kommt dein Gerechtsein zugute.«

9 By reason of the multitude of oppressions [the wicked] cause men to cry: these complain aloud because of the arm of the mighty.

»Man schreit wohl über die Menge der Bedrückungen, klagt laut über die Gewalttätigkeit der Großen,

10 But [man] saith not, Where is God my maker, who bestoweth joyful songs even in the night;

doch keiner sagt: ›Wo ist Gott, mein Schöpfer, der Lobgesänge schenkt in der Nacht,

11 Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of the heavens?

der uns Belehrung verleiht wie keinem Tiere des Feldes und uns höhere Weisheit gewinnen läßt als die Vögel des Himmels?‹

12 There do they cry, but he answereth not: because of the pride of evil men.

Da schreit man denn, ohne Erhörung bei ihm zu finden, wegen des Übermuts der Bösen.

13 Only what is false will God not hear, nor will the Almighty regard it.

Jawohl: auf eitles Klagen hört Gott nicht, sondern der Allmächtige läßt es unbeachtet.

14 Although thou sayest, thou canst not see him: yet the decision is before him; and do thou wait for him.

Nun sagst du aber gar, du sehest ihn nicht; deine Sache liege ihm vor, du wartest aber vergeblich auf seine Entscheidung!

15 But now, because his anger hath punished nothing, shall he not greatly take cognizance of the multitude of sins?

Und nun, da sein Zorn noch nicht gestraft und er sich um Torheit nicht sonderlich gekümmert hat,

16 But Job openeth wide his mouth for nought: without knowledge he heapeth up words.

da reißt Hiob seinen Mund zu leerem Gerede auf und ergeht sich ohne Einsicht in vermessenen Worten!«
