Job 35

1 Then commenced Elihu, and said,

Elihou reprit et dit:

2 Dost thou deem this to be just, that thou hast said, “My righteousness is more than God's?”

Est-ce cela que tu considères comme juste, cela que tu appelles "ta droiture au regard de Dieu,"

3 For thou sayest, “What benefit will it be unto thee? what more profit shall I have, than if I had sinned?”

de dire: "Quel avantage y trouvé-je? Quel profit de plus que si je faisais mal?"

4 I will truly reply unto thee with words, and unto thy friends with thee.

Je vais te répondre en quelques mots et à tes amis avec toi.

5 Look unto the heavens, and see; and gaze on the skies which are higher than thou.

Regarde le ciel et vois, contemple les nuages au-dessus de toi!

6 If thou sin, what dost thou effect against him? and if thy transgressions be multiplied, what canst thou do unto him?

Si tu agis mal, quelle est ton action sur Dieu? Si tes péchés sont nombreux, que lui importe?

7 If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what doth he accept out of thy hand?

Si tu agis bien, que lui donnes-tu? Ou qu’est-ce qu’il accepte de toi?

8 A man like thyself thy wickedness may reach, and a son of earth thy righteousness.

C’Est toi, créature humaine, qu’intéresse ta perversité; c’est à toi, fils d’Adam, qu’importe ta piété.

9 By reason of the multitude of oppressions [the wicked] cause men to cry: these complain aloud because of the arm of the mighty.

On se plaint il est vrai de la multitude d’exactions, on crie contre la violence des grands;

10 But [man] saith not, Where is God my maker, who bestoweth joyful songs even in the night;

mais on ne dit pas: "Où est Dieu, mon créateur, qui donne lieu à des chants joyeux pendant la nuit;

11 Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of the heavens?

qui nous Instruit de préférence aux animaux de la terre et nous éclaire plutôt que les oiseaux du ciel?"

12 There do they cry, but he answereth not: because of the pride of evil men.

Aussi bien, crie-t-on sans trouver d’écho, à cause de l’arrogance des méchants.

13 Only what is false will God not hear, nor will the Almighty regard it.

Non, Dieu n’écoute pas de vaines doléances, le Tout-Puissant n’y prête nulle attention.

14 Although thou sayest, thou canst not see him: yet the decision is before him; and do thou wait for him.

Combien moins encore quand tu dis que tu ne l’aperçois point, que ta cause est par devers lui et que tu es là à l’attendre!

15 But now, because his anger hath punished nothing, shall he not greatly take cognizance of the multitude of sins?

Et maintenant si tu prétends que sa colère ne sévit point, parce qu’il ne se soucie pas sérieusement des crimes qui se commettent,

16 But Job openeth wide his mouth for nought: without knowledge he heapeth up words.

je conclus que Job ouvre la bouche pour des riens, qu’il accumule des paroles manquant de sens.
