Job 34
1 And Elihu commenced, and said,
Eliu reprit et dit:
2 Hear, O ye wise men, my words; and ye that have knowledge, give ear unto me.
Sages, écoutez mes discours; hommes intelligents, prêtez-moi l’oreille.
3 For the ear proveth words, as the palate tasteth the food.
Car l’oreille juge les paroles, comme le palais discerne les aliments.
4 Let us choose for ourselves what is just: let us acknowledge between ourselves what is good.
Tâchons de discerner ce qui est juste; cherchons entre nous ce qui est bon.
5 For Job hath said, “I am righteous; and God hath taken away justice from me.
Job a dit: « Je suis innocent, et Dieu me refuse justice.
6 Should I lie concerning the justice due me? incurable is [my wound from] the arrow I bear in me without any transgression.”
Quand je soutiens mon droit, je passe pour menteur; ma plaie est douloureuse, sans que j’aie péché. »
7 What man is there like Job, who drinketh scorning like water,
Y a-t-il un homme semblable à Job? Il boit le blasphème comme l’eau!
8 And is on the road to keep company with the wrong-doers, and to walk with men of wickedness?
Il s’associe aux artisans d’iniquité, il marche avec les hommes pervers.
9 For he hath said, “It profiteth a man nothing when he acteth according to the pleasure of God.”
Car il a dit: « Il ne sert de rien à l’homme de chercher la faveur de Dieu. »
10 Therefore ye men of sense hearken unto me: far is it from God to practise wickedness; and from the Almighty to do wrong!
Ecoutez-moi donc, hommes sensés: Loin de Dieu l’iniquité! Loin du Tout-Puissant l’injustice!
11 For the work of a son of earth doth he recompense unto him, and according to the path of man doth he permit things to occur to him.
Il rend à l’homme selon ses œuvres, il rétribue chacun selon ses voies.
12 Yea, surely God will not condemn unjustly, nor will the Almighty pervert justice.
Non, certes, Dieu ne commet pas l’iniquité, le Tout-Puissant ne viole pas la justice.
13 Who hath given him a charge concerning the earth? or who hath intrusted [him] the whole world?
Qui lui a remis le gouvernement de la terre? Qui lui a confié l’univers?
14 If he were to set his heart upon man, he would gather unto himself his spirit and his breath:
S’il ne pensait qu’à lui-même, s’il retirait à lui son esprit et son souffle,
15 All flesh would perish together, and the son of earth would return again unto dust.
toute chair expirerait à l’instant, et l’homme retournerait à la poussière.
16 If then thou wishest to understand, hear this: give ear to the sound of my words.
Si tu as de l’intelligence, écoute ceci; prête l’oreille au son de mes paroles:
17 Is it possible that he who hateth justice should govern? or wilt thou condemn the righteous mighty One?
Un ennemi de la justice aurait-il le suprême pouvoir? Oses-tu condamner le Juste, le Puissant,
18 [Is it fit] to say to a king, Thou art worthless? and to princes, Ye are wicked?
qui dit à un roi: « Vaurien! » aux princes: « Pervers! »
19 Whereas he is one that showeth no favor to chieftains, and distinguisheth not the rich before the indigent; for all of them are the work of his hands.
qui ne fait pas acception de la personne des grands, qui ne regarde pas le riche plus que le pauvre, parce que tous sont l’ouvrage de ses mains?
20 In a moment will they die, and in the midst of the night; people are moved, and pass away: and the mighty will be removed without a human hand.
En un instant ils périssent, au milieu de la nuit, les peuples chancellent et disparaissent; le puissant est emporté sans main d’homme.
21 For big eyes are upon the ways of man, and all his steps doth he see.
Car les yeux de Dieu sont ouverts sur les voies de l’homme, il voit distinctement tous ses pas.
22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the evil-doers can hide themselves.
Il n’y a ni ténèbres ni ombre de la mort, où puissent se cacher ceux qui commettent l’iniquité.
23 For he need not direct [his attention] a long time upon man, that he should enter into judgment before God.
Il n’a pas besoin de regarder un homme deux fois, pour l’amener au jugement avec lui.
24 He breaketh down mighty men without [long] searching, and placeth others in their stead.
Il brise les puissants sans enquête, et il en met d’autres à leur place.
25 For the reason that he knoweth their deeds: therefore he overturneth them in the night, and they are crushed.
Il connaît donc leurs œuvres; il les renverse de nuit, et ils sont écrasés.
26 Among wicked men doth he strike them, in the place where [many] see them:
Il les frappe comme des impies, en un lieu où on les regarde,
27 Because they have departed from following him, and have not considered all his ways.
parce qu’en se détournant de lui, en refusant de connaître toutes ses voies,
28 Bringing before them the cry of the indigent, and the cry of the afflicted which he had to hear.
ils ont fait monter vers lui le cri du pauvre, ils l’ont rendu attentif au cri des malheureux.
29 When he now granteth rest, who will condemn [him]! and when he hideth his face, who can behold him? whether it be against a nation, or against one man, it is the same:
S’il accorde la paix, qui le trouvera mauvais; s’il cache son visage, qui pourra le contempler, qu’il soit peuple ou homme celui qu’il traite ainsi,
30 That no hypocritical man may reign, that such shall not be a mare to the people.
pour mettre fin au règne de l’impie, pour qu’il ne soit plus un piège pour le peuple?
31 For truly it is only fitting to say unto God, “I bear [cheerfully], I will not do any wrong;
Or avait-il dit à Dieu: « J’ai été châtié, je ne pécherai plus;
32 What I cannot see myself, do thou truly teach me; if I have done what is unjust, I will do so no more.”
montre-moi ce que j’ignore; si j’ai commis l’iniquité, je ne le ferai plus? »
33 Should he then according to thy view send a recompense, because thou hast rejected him? “Because thou must choose, and not I?” and what thou knowest, do speak.
Est-ce d’après ton avis que Dieu doit rendre la justice de sorte que tu puisses rejeter son jugement? Choisis à ton gré, et non pas moi; ce que tu sais, expose-le.
34 Men of sense will say unto me, and every wise man who heareth me,
Les gens sensés me diront, ainsi que l’homme sage qui m’écoute:
35 That Job hath not spoken with knowledge, and that his words are without intelligence.
« Job a parlé sans intelligence, et ses discours sont dépourvus de sagesse.
36 Oh that Job may therefore be probed continually, in order to give answers against sinful men.
Eh bien, que Job soit éprouvé jusqu’au bout, puisque ses réponses sont celles d’un impie!
37 For he addeth unto his sin transgression: among us he uttereth too many loud words, and multiplieth his speeches against God.
Car à l’offense il ajoute la révolte; il bat des mains au milieu de nous, il multiplie ses propos contre Dieu. »
